In fact it feels like the 550ti is underpowered compared to the rest of the computer. They do often have more VRAM, but that's not the reason they cost so much. Simple comparison: A Quadro 6000 is essentially a GeForce 470 with 6144MB of RAM instead of 1280MB. A GeForce 470 costs $200 to $400, depending on who you buy from. A Quadro 6000 costs $2400-4000, depending on who you buy from. 5GB of GDDR5 does not cost $2000. I can run gmod 13 on all low at 30 FPS or so but it crashes rather constantly.. and no I won't try installing Windows on it

I had a PC where I couldn't even play CS:S on low without it crashing less than a year ago.

You're paying for the R&D and the validation process that comes with the card, much improved drivers, ECC support, FP64, and much, much more. It's simple, if you care about the cost, then you don't need it. BTW, if you have a GTX470/GTX480, you can possibly flash into a quadro card, and modding quadro drivers to work with those GF100 chips are easier, than for say GF110.

You may be able to get the laptop to play some games actually I got my laptop with a GMA4500 to play TF2 on all low and using that low poly pack that's floating around the TF2 section. currently i get ~45 - 60 FPS in dustbowl. So my computer keeps fucking crashing because of Firefox (I think). Happened 5 times in the past 3 hours. I've already lost about 2 hours of work in Ableton because of it. Just started happening out of nowhere.

After googling around it seems some people with my motherboard and memory are having the same problem and the solution is setting the memory frequency (which i have set to my memory's frequency) to auto. gonna go see if that works.
