<blogpunch> Anyways, while I'm waiting for my laptop to be released, I'm looking into upgrading *this* computer into a reasonable gaming rig. Now, being a Mac, it's bound to be more expensive than a regular PC would be, especially since it's old, and especially since it's essentially a server in a desktop case. My priorities in this upgrade: 1) Video card 2) Memory 3) Hard drive Everything else is at least "good enough". I'd like a second, full-HD monitor, and a new mouse/keyboard would be cool, as would a proper audio system, and maybe a USB PCI card (I'm really low on ports), but those are not yet issues. For the video card, the Official Store has two "options" and a joke: a 5870 for $500, a 5770 for $250, or a Quadro 4000 for $1200. Obviously, even though I'm decently set for money (I *could* technically buy that Quadro right now), I'm not buying official. Checking Ebay, I found a Mac-compatible 4870 for $140. Which actually doesn't seem to be too terrible a price - I know I *could* buy a better card for that much (a 550, for example), but doing so would require at least upgrading the PSU, possibly getting better cooling as well. And it would almost certainly not work in OS X - that requires different firmware to work under EFI. Since I actually *like* OS X, the "best card" for the money isn't my best pick. RAM doesn't even *have* an Official Store option, so I can't laugh at Apple for that. However, NewEgg seems to take that as a challenge - the cheapest FB-DDR2 ECC RAM on there is $35 for 1GB - $50 for a 2GB module. And since it seems like it has to be installed in pairs, that means, minimum, $70 for 2GB or $100 for 4GB. Once again, Ebay to the rescue. I can find a gig of the stuff for under $10. It's probably riskier - a lot riskier - but that is most definitely a good price. Hard drives, I only checked the Apple store so I could laugh at them. They're completely COTS - any ordinary SATA drive will work. 1TB = $150, 2TB = $300, and 640GB = ... $200? Methinks Apple forgot to mark down the old kit. Anyways, only decision here is "Hitachi, WD or Seagate"? And also "how many"? I've got three slots open, might as well put them to use. So, let's add this up: $140 + $20 + $160 => $360, plus shipping $360 would get me a new, gaming-capable video card, an extra 2GB of memory, and four times more disk space than I currently have. Sounds like a good revamp to me, although I think I should actually get around to parting out my old laptop before I order new parts (I could probably make about that much off it, actually). That should be sufficient motivation for getting that crap off my desk. </blogpunch>

THe 2400 looked ok, 3.1ghz, but not much overclock. I suppose I have no need for Z68 if I'm not overclocking.

I rock one instead of a Z68 because my board was $70 of when I bought it and it got me a very nice high-end board with 3 PCIex16 with reasonable breakout of lanes without screwing up controllers... $220 Asrock P67 Extreme6 for $150 was worth it.

If he doesn't get an unlocked CPU, getting P67 is pointless. H67 would be in that case better because IGP and stuff.
