Derlicious you live in the UK, you should know that buying a GTX480 here is a complete waste. Its not £50 more its £70 more for the cheapest GTX480 compared to the cheapest HD5870, and it doesn't perform "far better" either. In the majority of cases it performs around 10% faster than a HD5870, and is slower than a 5870 in others.
I dont think £70 is worth a 10% increase in some circumstances.
[QUOTE=ADT;23123019]Calling the gtx 470 and HD 5870 "shitty cards" is a bit pretentious, isn't it?
And no, the gtx 480 is not a good card for your information. Sorry to dissapoint you, dear novice who knows performance by Youtube videos.[/QUOTE]
Urm i'm not calling them shitty cards, and calling the GTX480 a shit card is retarded since it's the second best card in the world.

and with extreme tessellation

I'm afraid you are living in the land "Before the Fermi cards were released Land
Stop being a retard and shut the fuck up

Oh dear,
Who cares about tesselation ? It's just an eye-candy for some games.
[editline]01:43PM[/editline]
Huuuuur, "Unigine Heaven" for your comparaison...
[editline]01:45PM[/editline]
Ahaha, Crysis is just a bad-optimized game (Though Crysis 2 will not be like that, I hope).
[editline]01:46PM[/editline]
27 fps (5870) compared to 33 fps (Gtx 480) ? Doesn't justify the price between these two cards.
You cant just show the same Crysis benchmark, you need to look at overall performance, and synthetic benchmarks also mean nothing.
Here is my contribution:
[url=http://www.scan.co.uk/savedbasket/85c661b9c4944c1db8f85e4c2c51fe10]Build[/url]
Core i5 750
HD 5870
4GB 1600Mhz RAM
1TB HDD
30GB OCZ SSD
I know you said your not interested in an SSD, but that's only because you have never experienced one, when you start using one you wont look back. And on your budget you can easily get a 30GB drive in there without the detriment to any other parts.
30GB SD seems not too little for him? I would choose the Intel 40GB at least.
Just an opinion.

The OS fits well on the 30gb and maybe few games also.
Also Intel's SSD arent as a good as OCZ since they havent got SandForce and are lacking in speed etc.
A GTX480 is more powerful than a 5870. FULLSTOP. It just is.
Yeah, just about +10% at maximum on some games.
Yup yup.
Here's some benchmarks which show a significant difference between the 480 and 5870

The GTX 480 takes alot more power than the 5870. That'll mean he will need a more powerful and (for the most part) more expensive PSU, to do CF/SLI. This may not be a major factor, but I find it worth to consider.
No not a lot. A 5870 you should have a 550w and a GTX480 you should have a 600w
