Asus laptop with an i7. Go look on amazon yourself... It lasts me 4-5 hours gaming on the 5830 and can run practically any game at max.
Macbook Pro. I know you've disregarded them before, but 10 hour battery life in a laptop which is lighter and thinner than most is pretty special. I do Computer Science at Uni, and after 2 years I can tell you the only people who still bother with laptops are people who struggle with notetaking on a netbook (used to be me with an Eee 901) and people with Macbooks since the battery lasts so long. An awful lot of people started with big 15-17inch windows laptops/gaming laptops and have now given up on them since the battery is useless for uni, and they are too big and heavy to carry comfortably. Also with Apple if you show a student card you get a 15% discount and 3 years Apple care for £50(normally £150).
I'm sorry, but no... I just can't buy a MBP. 1. It just goes against my morals and being 2. It really is way too expensive for something I can get on PC that has better specs...as I said, I don't need 10 hours of battery life, I will be near an outlet most of the time 3. i'm not looking for a 10 pound beast, there are 'gaming' laptops that are around 5 to 6 pounds (like the one I linked in this thread)
Justice- The plain old macbook has Intel GMA graphics. stfu
Justice- The plain old macbook has Intel GMA graphics. stfu
Mhm thank you. As well, I've been really looking at the ASUS N61JQ-A1 as an option. I am worried about the complaints people have been giving it though: *horrible speakers *keyboard has significant flex *cheap build quality *awful LCD screen I'm still looking.
You could get by on the normal 999$ MacBook which still has decent specs. They're definitely the best when it comes to being both extremely portable (battery life is the biggest plus here when it comes to the MB/MBP) and somewhat powerful (C2D and NVidia's latest mobile integrated graphics chip, you could probably play Source on Medium/High with it depending on what resolution you run it at) while still being affordable. http://www.apple.com/macbook/
I would hardly call that decent specs. And THAT is certainly not the latest mobile graphics chip from nVidia.
Justice- The plain old macbook has Intel GMA graphics. stfu
http://www.apple.com/uk/macbook/features.html "MacBook features the new NVIDIA GeForce 320M graphics processor" The GMA Macbooks are 2 years old now. Even the previous Macbooks had 9400M's
The 320m sucks more than you could possibly imagine... Running Crysis on medium on a laptop? That'll be without any AA, and at a low resolution. The MBP's got a pretty crappy GPU to extend battery-life, and there's nothing to say against it. They got however a very good battery life. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3CwyW9585Iw Getting about 20-25fps on all medium with no AA. This is very playable, but far from impressive.
Get what's best for the money
well I clearly would never go apple then :) and I've said it a million times and I can say it a million more, I don't need a 10 hour battery life, but thank you for trying to care.
And the 320M is how much better than a GMA?
A good deal better, actually.
Perhaps this laptop will suit your needs? Both for gaming and studying. http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834220717&Tpk=u30

The one I would buy: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834115806 Though you would probably have to recharge it after about 2 hours and 30mins... I say buy it if you have the option of recharging every 2 hours or so... Any longer, then it won't work out :/ This may be more suitable: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834101229 Though it's a 5470...

Bottocks then...
Who knew finding a laptop would be so difficult!
http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834220696 Best $/performance I could find... I'm gonna try finding one less battery eating... [editline]08:13PM[/editline] This will play games, not very good, but better than a 310m: http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834152157 Most suitable for your needs too, I guess.

Well, it's a i7/5730 in a laptop, what can you expect? I guess I'll recommend number 2. Build a nice desktop for the rest of the money. Or give 'em to me.

Then don't expect my help next time :colbert: Well, glad I could help.
Are you guys seriously recommending a MBP because its "ascetically pleasing"? Man, enjoy your year old technology. Core2Duo? C'mon. Slap an 8 cell battery in a low end i3 and you'll probably get 8 hours of battery life too. Not to mention that the GPU is shit and most high end laptops are all using LED screens so it doesn't leave Apple with much. Also don't compare durability of a MBP to a 500 dollar Toshiba. Thats not what were talking about.
Then don't expect my help next time :colbert: Well, glad I could help.
Mhm thank you. Rated heart.
Thanks. Now I feel cool :c00lbert:
-snip- xoticpc is looking much better atm -snip- [editline]05:21PM[/editline] also, 5400rpm drive or 7200rpm drive? [editline]06:54PM[/editline] as well, i7-720QM or i5-540M? heh and 5650, 5730, 5850 or 5870 mobility radeon? (keep in mind I need roughly 3-4 hours of battery)
OK I think I've got it all planned out. Going to try and see if I can get the 5870 moved down to a 5850 for some better battery life. Then I just have to choose i5-540m or i7-620m and I'm set!
There really is no point in getting A MPB. You buy it, it's twice the cost of something for a PC and its hardware lags a few years behind to boot. You still run Windows on it and to me, it's not even a good looking laptop. There are much more aesthetically pleasing PC laptops out there. And I don't think I'm too clumsy, but I do want warranty just in case. But I don't want to pay out the ass just for a tough notebook either. [editline]01:41AM[/editline] Also, when I say battery life, I mean like 3-4 hours. Nine is for people who can't get outlets at any time. I probably can.
Intel i7 and NVidia 330 beg to differ at the "hardware lags".
Intel i7 and NVidia 330 beg to differ at the "hardware lags".
intel i7 ok. but it has been out for 6 months now. and nvidia 330 i laugh at. the laptop i'm probably getting has an ati 5870m. (save the exception of poor battery of course) as well, just taking a look at their site makes me shit bricks: for example, from 320GB@5400rpm to 500GB 7200rpm is $150.00...are you fucking kidding me now? same thing with their display...utter bullshit mbp: it's just retarded. [editline]01:45AM[/editline] ok laugh at is a harsh term, 330 isn't horrible...but still, as I said, lag
