Uhh no. Buy one then come whining back
All firmware versions are fucked, if you don't believe me google "WAG160N DHCP crash"
You don't know what you're talking about right
huh?

"ah but 64bit pci has "plenty" of bandwidth surely you could get that"
and those "server" motherboards cost plenty of money.
There is no way of fucking "fixing it"
DD-WRT.
However it should still work out of the box or be priced accordingly.
Linksys charges large amounts of money for sub par hardware.
Never had a problem with my Linksys router, it works great. Also the Netgear router i'm currently using doesn't give me any problem at all, so I would recommend both Linksys and Netgear.
ReznorT is incompetent.
The Intel Atom is an overpriced underpowered gimmick, whats the point in paying twice as much for what amounts to a P3 800mhz, it's also a closed source black box with awful driver support and you can't remove the CPU.
Awful driver support? Every single device is supported by Linux out of the box. It also manages to run a L4D Coop server just fine, so underpowered my ass. It works fine, really. And it costs about 120 case/psu included if you get a decent deal.
I don't see how Linksys makes closed source shitboxes since they give out the firmware source code for my router.

No, the router is
And you're an idiot
I know what i'm talking about, and you seem to not grasp the fact that the router is plagued with bugs

Wow, you're so cool. I wish I could edit quotes like you. Problems with one router does not make Linksys a bad company.
Yes it does
It makes them a shitty company because they don't offer any decent support, nor do they accept RMA's or even a simple swap
They also have concluded that they are not going to be fixing the firmware any time soon.
Just because it has a "Cisco" logo on it doesn't mean it's the shit in router tech.
You obviously have no clue as to what you are talking about so tl;dr talk to someone else

Linksys routers + DD-WRT = awesomeness.
It's all their Non-Linux routers that suck dickballs.

Cisco devices aren't anything special and if you have to ask how much licensing costs, you can't afford it.
They are the penultimate in black boxes and in addition to that they have a backdoor for The Man and whoever can figure out how to access it.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intel_GMA#GMA_500 (nor are the non-free drivers compatible with newer versions of linux, some of the boards come with different graphics chipsets but saying "get atom" will result in them getting whichever)
The Nvidia chipsets are also closed source black boxes
It is underpowered, saying you can do X thing fine doesn't mean you can do Z thing fine.
If the motherboard or CPU breaks you have to replace the entire thing because you can't remove the CPU as it's all intergrated, this is how intel wants everything to be.

They may not be closed source but they're still shitboxes, I also don't see any sort of specifications around here so they are still black boxes.
The only reason they released the source code is because RMS went after them for GPL violations.

Then what motherboard/cpu combo do YOU suggest for a DIY router??
It's easy to rant, but hard to help :colbert:
I have a Linksys router, it works great.
I bought one Linksys router awhile back. I got home and set it up and it didn't work. The connection would drop every 10-15 minutes requiring me to reset it. I thought it was one case of a bad router, but I returned it and got SIX different routers of the same brand and they ALL had the same problem and were all Linksys.
I have bought several other Linksys products thinking that it was a bad line of routers and they ALL had similar or different problems that were never solved, even with hours of bitching at tech support and "special" firmware.
Ever since Cisco bought Linksys, their products have gone down the shitter and aren't worth anything anymore. If you're lucky enough to have bought Linksys products before Cisco made them their bitch then you're one of the lucky ones.
I have since built my own router with a 900 line custom IPTables routing script on a P4 machine and it works better than any shitty dedicated hardware box I've ever had. With a bit of modification, I can add a WAP to it.
They may not be closed source but they're still shitboxes, I also don't see any sort of specifications around here so they are still black boxes.
Most of them have a SOAC with a 200-250 MHz MIPS core and 8-32M of RAM with a 16M flash ROM.

If you don't care about size, a full sized PC works fine, it doesn't matter if it's a Intel / VIA or AMD.

Problem is, I do care about size, AND noise.
And he blamed pretty much all small form factor motherboards for bad linux driver support, or weak performance.
... lets switch back to normal routers... I currently don't want to have a DIY Router since I want my Mother to able to reset it easily without problems, if I ever deploy away.
My current list:
TRENDnet TEW-633GR ~100USD [Clone of DIR-655]

ZyXEL X550N ~50USD (found it cheaper)

ZyXEL X550NH ~74USD (Same as X550N only with High-Gain Ant)

X550N(H) are currently going on under somewhat support by OpenWRT since their all based on AP81/AP83 cards.

My TEW-652BRP is a clone of a DIR-615 for heads up.
Went with the ZyXEL X550NH.
What the shit, no auto merge again?
