You need to make sure it is turned on
Oh shi-
Your data is most likely to be safe, it's probably just the controller. Take the drive out of the enclosure, try to either plug the drive into your PC via SATA or IDE cable, or you can get a SATA/IDE to USB converter pretty cheap. If you can now see the drive, hurrah! If not that you're in a bit of trouble. See if you can hear the disks spinning when you power it on. If so you might be able to get the data back from data recovery software. Recuva (http://www.piriform.com/recuva) is a personal favorite of mine, it's free too! If the drive clicks you are in deep shit. Immediatly remove the power from the drive. It is most likely that the heads are damaged and you will have to send it to a lab with a clean room for recovery. Last time I did this for a client it cost over £600 (ex VAT). Good luck! :edit: I didn't see the part about the firmware.
Thanks The Slayer, I got a similar response to the SATA/USB convertor in work today, and will try that. If the drive works, I'll buy an external hard drive bay and stick it in that. Thanks for all help in this thread guys.
My suggestion would be to get a new enclosure and put it in that.
Getting a SATA/IDE to USB cable today, hopefully that'll solve it
UPDATE The SATA/USB didn't work, the hard drive won't power on now. When I use the power supply from the old connection it powers on fine, but the mini usb on that is busted. Could it be that the SATA/USB connector isn't giving the drive enough power?
I also had this problem with my Maxtor external harddrive yesterday and part of tody, but mine was fixed by disconnecting the power and reconnecting it again. (the power, not the USB) however, you stated that you tried that already, so I'm afraid I can't help you here...
Thanks anyway, I might bring it to one of those PC doctor gents I guess
