I remember back on my XP install I had to reach over and turn off our printer because it for some reason wanted to print my actual screen.

The only way for me to fully enjoy a desktop with icons on it - make the icons fit the wallpaper.
The only other desktop with icons I ever fully liked is the well-known "picture of room" wallpaper, with icons on a bookshelf and My Computer on a desk, etc.
