omg anime soooo dumb :downs: but on a serious note, nice.
why would you ever use a lossy file format for local use
100% quality jpeg, to the naked eye, has the same visual quality as a PNG. To me anyways.
Its saved as a png and it doesnt show the artifacts when opened in a image viewer.
If the image is anything but jpeg (or bmp, forgot) Windows 7 will compress the image badly. I know, I hate it too.

(Warning not easy on the eyes) [t]http://i.cubeupload.com/iGPPN7.png[/t] It's not artifacted at all.

For me Windows did compress it sadly. Bypassing is possible with opening it in Firefox and setting it as a wallpaper from there :v
neither of these points are true, I use png for all of my backgrounds and none of them have been compressed
Take a nice clean PNG and put it in Photoshop or GIMP or whatever, save it as 100% quality JPEG and look at it compared to the PNG. I certainly don't notice any difference. Also, if it's not true, why does it happen to me, and apparently tratzzz? Do we have a broken copy of Windows or some shit? Before I knew about the lossless JPEG thing I did the same workaround as him. Edit: Okay, turns out there IS a difference, but it's so fucking small, the point is moot. It's not noticeable unless you zoom in really far on it or try to use the paint bucket tool in an image editor.

Colors are more dull than png, especially reds.
I can tell without having to zoom in. Colors are more dull than png, especially reds.
Everyone is different I guess because I sure can't see a difference normally... Oh well, to each their own.
I can tell without having to zoom in. Colors are more dull than png, especially reds.
Absolute nonsense. The file format doesn't have anything to do with the intensity of colours, and especially at 100% quality. The problem with jpegs isn't that they're lossy, it's that editing them makes them more and more lossy every time.
PNG: Same exact image saved as JPEG 100% quality: The color in the jpeg aren't as vivid or clear as the one in the png.
Look at the JPEG corners for example.
PNG: Same exact image saved as JPEG 100% quality: The color in the jpeg aren't as vivid or clear as the one in the png.
They're very slightly off, but that's the shitty software or settings you're using.
They're very slightly off, but that's the shitty software or settings you're using.
I got the same result in PDN and the gimp.
This seems like an easily solvable problem. Use PNGs for simple shapes and colors, 100 quality JPEGs for photos. That's what I do at least.
I got the same result in PDN and the gimp.
Then they're both shit or you're not using the right colour settings.
Then they're both shit or you're not using the right colour settings.
I can still see a difference between the two. Though that does look better.
I can still see a difference between the two. Though that does look better.
No you don't, there isn't any. The colours are exactly the same.
No you don't, there isn't any. The colours are exactly the same.
No they aren't, I just took RGBs of random select pixels on each image, they were off. Example: Pixel 80, 15 is #AFBFCE on the PNG and #AEBECD on the JPEG. Pixel 100, 10 is #E6423B on the PNG and #E6413B on the JPEG. Pixel 45, 15 is #8DC63F on the PNG and #8DC73F on the JPEG. Granted the last two are more subtle than the first. However the gloss on the taskbar button is brighter on the PNG than it is on the JPEG. Maybe you can't see a difference, but I can. If you paste the JPEG over the PNG and Ctrl+Z,Y you can see the difference better.
PNG has a gamma attribute stored in the file, that may be skewing it.
There's also still minor artifacting too.
I always get banding when I save as PNG anyway.
Who cares

I prefer a simple background and desktop without much on it. Since anything is pinned at the bottom of my taskbar my desktop is mostly used during projects and I organize there, similar to a real desktop.
