It's really not bad, especially if you use a dock (the official one from GNOME is available as a shell extension and there are countless others as external programs). It's only just come out, and after either the sheer volume of complaints gets to the upstream developers or the community gets cracking on extensions the shell should become really nice.
As for right now, the lack of a traditional desktop (having nautilus handle the desktop is buggy at best) and a few other things are a little irritating, but they work well. My biggest complaint is that without their dock (which eats up a lot of space on my netbook), I keep forgetting which windows I have open. You might want to wait a bit, but it's not as bad as I thought it would be.
Too lazy to edit the shit out, and I don't really give a fuck.
Also, yes, that is the outline of a hidden folder at the top right corner. :v:
