You can try Spotify. I think it can sync to iPod but I haven't seen it myself.

I tried that a while ago. It fucked up EVERYTHING on my ipod.
Like example. Searching for a song that begings with the letter "G" and it searched to "J"
So I went back to sync it with iTunes but I do not use it as my media player.
Itunes is a terrible media player. It's probably the best choice for syncing with iDevices though.
Back when I had an iPod, [url=http://banshee.fm/]Banshee[/url] was my media manager of choice. It's mainly made for Linux, but there are versions for OSX and Windows. I've never used the Windows version, but otherwise it was amazing. I've never found a device it doesn't sync to.
I use iTunes because I always have. I do have some idevices that I use it with but I just use it because I'm used to it. The memory issues don't bother me though, my rig can handle it without any bother.

I'm stuck with using iTunes to sync my iPod as well - I tried using other programs and wound up bricking it.
but ehh, if iTunes isn't running when I don't need it, it runs fine.
