Well, it's down to $275. should I stick with that sempron, or go with an Athlon now that I'm under budget? I want to spend the least I can, but would there be a noticable difference between the two?
Yes.
Yes what? Yes I should stick with the sempron? Yes I should upgrade to the Athlon? Yes there's a noticeable difference?
the athlon is way better
Yes what? Yes I should stick with the sempron? Yes I should upgrade to the Athlon? Yes there's a noticeable difference?
There will be a noticeable difference, if your mother is a multitasker(not ridiculous, but more than 2 different programs open at a time).
Wow, $301 with the Athlon, right on budget [editline]03:34PM[/editline] Just placed the order, here's the final build
I hope you didn't order the intel mb for the amd cpu..
Wow, $301 with the Athlon, right on budget Athlon x2 Intel motherboard
Uhh, dude?
What are you doing with an Intel motherboard with an AMD CPU? Quick! Cancel the order!

The order hasn't been packaged yet, talking to a rep. I must have selected the wrong mobo when I was re-doing it. [editline]10:12AM[/editline] Orders canceled. Thank god you guys noticed that or I woulda been fucked. Looking at this mobo: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813186200

And that mobo looks alright.
I'm gonna wait for someone else to approve the order just to make sure. I kept all the same parts but swapped the mobo. I also ended up saving $20ish on the mobo, and got 10% off the case and HDD, so my total is all the way down to $286. I'm debating getting 1gb of RAM though, because I really doubt she'll need 2gb, and I'm trying to save as much as possible. You guys think I should just wait until the 4th of July sale assuming there is one? I won't have the two 10%s, but I'd imagine it'd be cheaper.
You could buy the 10% parts now, and buy the rest on the sale. Mobo looks fine.
Meh, I'm just gonna wait I think, the 10% is only $7.30 off, if there isn't a better deal during that sale I can always just get this

I would love if danish prices were like the American. When you are like "Oh god! 4GB RAM 140$? That's crazy!" I'm like "Oh, 50% off! Hell yeah!"

I love McDonalds, time to time that is. KFC is better with that double chicken bun thing. Anyway lucky you guys spotted it for him!
Prices may go up, technology is gay like that. DDR3 was cheaper than this once upon a time. Stupid economy.
back in august of 2009 you could get 6gb of DDR3 ram for 79 dollars.
back in august of 2009 you could get 6gb of DDR3 ram for 79 dollars.
Exactly, over double now.

You might want to get 2GB of RAM to help buffer out the OS's usage and general app usage, and is another stick really that much more for the increased performance?
That new mobo doesn't have PCI Express 16 2.0, only 16. Won't that bottleneck the GPU?
What OS are you going to use?
That new mobo doesn't have PCI Express 16 2.0, only 16. Won't that bottleneck the GPU?
There is no GPU... Besides it would only be like, 5% or something... XP isn't really supported by Microsoft anymore... No drivers have been released in a long time. This means that it is more likely to get infected by virus, so I say you should buy one more GB RAM, and install Win7.
Windows 7 is quite easy to get into, after a week or two she'll be used to it.
If she's just using this computer for simple tasks, get Ubuntu. It's actually easy to get into and it's quite nice. It's free as well. http://www.ubuntu.com/
My mom still doesn't know how to move a window around, she sure as hell isn't using Ubuntu, and as for viruses, I've pretty much trained her how to avoid them, and have bi-daily scans with malwarebytes and AVG, only thing she's gotten recently was a little adware, and I suspect that my step dad was the reason for that because he pretends that he knows everything, so if he fucks it up I plan on telling him that he can go out and get a job and pay me the same rate that the guy here charges to fix it because he refuses to listen when I tell him not to click every ad on the page.

I personally just do a sweep with malwarebytes once every couple months on mine, never have anything but a couple of minor things I get from ads most likely
