PLEASE makesure you do NOT untick "Microsoft Windows Operating System" because that's just dumb,.
Actually that's just the windows sidebar, and in windows 7 it can also be the sticky notes. For some weird reason they are called "Microsoft Windows Operating System" in msconfig.
My friend actually reformats his hard drive when anything begins to slow down. He does this like every month. He has OCD.
I do it bimonthly regardless :v:
Also you should add a part about disabling unwanted services in services.msc. Here is a good guide to base that on.
I do it bimonthly regardless :v:
Broke my automerge :(
tl;bdr [sp]Too long but did read[/sp]
You reminded me to do a defrag. For that I thank you.
Good job putting pictures up, some people can't learn that way.
My friend actually reformats his hard drive when anything begins to slow down. He does this like every month. He has OCD.
I do that too or used to do it every four months, until X-plane Over writed my partition containing the windows reinstall. Its much easier than deleting 396GB of data strewn through out the C:/ Drive
need to show them to clean the inside of their case too. it's part of the general maintenance
Has anyone mentioned it's also a good idea to dust out your computer once every three months (well I do anyway) to keep your computer running cool?
Is it bad if I have 28GB of temporary files?
Hmm, I knew how to do this for a long time, and it's pretty much done the same way on XP. Well, it is helpful if some people don't.
i swaer to god i saw all this before
You talk about making your PC run faster and then you mention Defraggler, the program that took 61 hours to complete the last time I ran it. And that was a week after running Auslogics Disk Defrag, which took 55 minutes.
It is wise to use the scheduled defrag option. I have it run every Wednesday night while I sleep. I never have to bother around with keeping on top of defragging and everything runs nice and fast.
Watching TV while waiting for your computer to complete its regular maintenance is an option.

My pc took almost all day to defragment.
Is it bad if I have 28GB of temporary files?
That's nearly 1/3rd my hard drive :aaaaa:
Make xp one
My friend actually reformats his hard drive when anything begins to slow down. He does this like every month. He has OCD.
I would too. Nothing beats a full reformat. Feels refreshing.
IMO the disk cleaners and such that come with windows are pretty much junk, you're better off with diskkeeper or that sort of thing. Smart defrag and advanced system care are pretty much the best free ones you can get.
Nice guide, I'd do the disk defrag but it takes like 12 hours for me :(
There's your reason for getting it done then.
I can recommend buying TuneUp Utilities. It does all of those things but in one program and it does a lot more :)
I've actually been too lazy to defragment and stuff with my new pc so thanks for reminding me to do that.
So, i was breifly looking though the guide and knew about most of it except the being able to turn things off in the msconfig. So i thought... hmm, well my laptop is horribly slow... maybe this will help... Then i got worried... is this bad?
Make it short and sweet: "Delete vista, Install XP."
Make it short and sweet: "Delete vista, Install XP."
why? Install Win7 if anything
So, i was breifly looking though the guide and knew about most of it except the being able to turn things off in the msconfig.
My bed is in the same room as my PC so I don't want the hard drive thrashing away while I try to sleep.
same, I run mine during the night on all my machines at the same time, imagin these 3 going off all night! (my beasts)
It is wise to use the scheduled defrag option.
Pretty good thing. But you forgot to mention an antivirus scan. Spybot - Search and Destroy is also very useful for keeping your PC from being fucked up.
Helps a lot, doesn't it? I use it.
Thanks for the disk defrag info
Is there any advantages to Defraggler? I use Smart Defrag.
