if by your current system you mean your laptop then that's okay because laptops are way slower and more unstable than desktops.
The build I suggested is pretty good. Buy only 2GB of RAM. (And in time if you see that you want more out of your system buy another one same as this.)
The applications you are running (even if all them are open in one instance ;) ) should not be a problem for the cpu i suggested.
But if you insist buy a quad core. it's your call :P I'd go with a quad core as well.
No. Laptops aren't unstable.
Get 4GBs OP and get a quad over a dual-core.

Laptops are unstable in terms of 3D and multimedia. And I don't see point for OP to get 4gb
Sorry for being a newb, but what do you mean by OP?
OP = orignal poster (the person who started the thread. You.)

No, they're not. And 4GBs > 2GBs because it gives your PC more resources to work with thus giving you more power to multi-task and play games better.
Oh! (embarrassed) Thank you.
I initially intended to get 3GB as it was going to have 32 bit vista, however I now have 7 to put on and when I looked at the prices, 2 x 2GB was pretty much the same cost as 2 x 1GB + 2 x 512 and thought, well if i can use it I might as well have it. That said, if it's a waste of cash then I don't want to be stupid and spend cash for the sake of it. If it will help performance and multi tasking then I happy to pay for it.
4GBs will definitely improve your performance. Make sure you get Windows 7 64-bit. 32-bit OSs can't harness anymore than 3GBs. Even if you have 4GBs 32-bit will only read 3GBs.
