512MB FB SDR ram
10GB scsi HDD
matrox video card you can slot ram in
Dual PIII 700 MHZ
windows ME
what do?
hell yeah, Matrox was the shit back in the day.
Install Windows ME, and see how long you can keep it stable. My current record is 2 weeks.
hahahahaha
I got a used p3 computer with ME on it from goodwill about 3 years ago. I just deleted all the crap on its hard drive and used it for a good year with no hangups or crashes before I put XP on it. I still miss ME.
There is one thing I miss from ME: The startup sound.
I think the reason is that the computer I had ME on had critical faults fairly regularly and it was such a relief when it booted correctly with the soundcard working.

Linux.
Xubuntu or Kubuntu should run great on that thing.
Modern OS running on an old computer.
edit- Now that I think about it, vanilla Ubuntu would probably work just fine.
I got it running on an old P2 laptop with only 32MB ram, and the only reason that I changed OSes was because it ran too slowly on such limited hardware.
forgot to say, it has a sound blaster 64 AWE gold in too
[editline]27th October 2010[/editline]
will kubuntu support that?
since this is now a "new found junk" thread, i guess i'll post some stuff i got recently-

15 computers, 10 lcds. I got a fully functional 20" apple cinema display, and 1 other lcd that works
i'm gonna rescue some of the other lcd's, some just need some new caps.
the towers have pentium 4's, 5 of them actually have hyper-threading, 3-3.2ghz. super awesome. i'm donating a lot of them :buddy:
and making an uber server with the left-overs :science:
if any of those are SATA, donate a hard drive to me
oh and that last stack of hdd's on the left are 300gb and 500gb drives. bummer though, the original owner went slap-happy with a drill and they're all dead. i plugged them all in though, and they're maxtors; i can hear the stuck-spindle noise in the back of my head
i have some other 30 40-80gb drives. cool beans.
if any of those are SATA, donate a hard drive to me
ahh sorry. only 1, 200gb, which i'm using because my main hard drive kicked the bucket a week ago.
I hate when people take drills to hard drives. it's such a waste when they can just dban them and be done with it
Holy shit OP, you found an old computer by a dump. Congratulations, go and buy yourself a cake.
exactly my thinking. i counted them... their were 11 500gb drives... and 5-10 300gb drives...
[editline]27th October 2010[/editline]
automerge :argh:
[editline]27th October 2010[/editline]
and i found a 15" lcd screen, perfectly fine at the dump last saturday
I wish Holland had dumps like that. :saddowns:
you have craigslist?
holy mother of fuck drummer. was that in just 1 hit?
all i got was that workstation, a sempron PC missing a case and a celeron dell
and that was spread over 2 weeks
I wish my dump had more computers and less 10 foot tall walls of tvs.
haha, yup one hit. i got it from a guy who had fixed computers as a hobby, and suddenly didn't want them.
found it on craigslist. it's gold i tell you.
[editline]27th October 2010[/editline]
and my dump is cool too. all electronics go in an empty trailer, the big kind for an 18 wheeler. when no one's looking just go for an lcd or a few computers :ninja:
I just found this:

[IMG_thumb]http://filesmelt.com/dl/062.JPG[/IMG_thumb]
It's an old Compaq tc1100 tablet. It boots up but the screen is fucked up:

Why are you guys so goddamn lucky?

Better safe than sorry.
And most mediumsized and up corporations don't drill the harddrives anymore.
They shred then to tiny pieces.

it has a small small pressure mark on the right side of the screen. not annoying at all and it's just a little darker.
oh and i got a powermac g5 with it. but it's the base base model, single core 1.6ghz with 256mb of ram :suicide:
Pepper;25684034']will kubuntu support that?
I don't see why not. Give it a try.

Possibly paranoid the files would still be there? With all of those "FBI see blah blah files" they might think that?
Possibly paranoid the files would still be there? With all of those "FBI see blah blah files" they might think that?
DBan would pretty much wipe it clean though...
Possibly paranoid the files would still be there? With all of those "FBI see blah blah files" they might think that?
It's actually more because of possible industry espionage, atleast when it comes to companies destroying hdd's.
DBan would pretty much wipe it clean though...
If the hdd's contains sensitive information for your company or your customers, you WANT to be 100% sure the data can't be retrieved again.
Hence why HDD shredding is a fast growing business

Well jumping in, trying to save it would be a stupid idea.
