All consumer routers are shit but when you factor in cost Linksys routers are at an acceptable level of shit.
For people who can't read between the lines I'm saying they're fine
The older Belkin routers are fine, I'm sitting happy using an old Wireless G ADSL1 router and it's far better than the Belkin N1 ADSL2+ router I have (that I've RMA'd twice already, it reboots randomly / gets as hot as the devil's ass)

this one looks like it's had outstanding ratings.
i have a speedstream 5100 adsl modem in my basement somewhere
ALso, i read somewhere before that you can use dd-wrt in a client mode or something. Was thinking of using it to give internet to my xbox. Anybody ever had any success with this?
You can, I haven't set one up before, but I've used it on my xbox. (in a hotel ;) )

Using a pretty decent Linksys e1000, the wireless is great.

NETGEAR's drivers are complete fail, don't even bother.
So you're going to toss out really good hardware because you can't download the patched drivers from their website?
Good job. I've had no problem with their drivers.
Real men make their own router from an old PC.

Done that, installed m0n0wall, got the T-shirt.
I will never buy a Belkin ever again. I had Comcast out to my house 7 times, replacing cables under and around the house, and it all boiled down to the shitty Belkin router. :/
Netgear routers have always been rock solid performers, never need rebooted, and have amazing range.
Linksys suck ass with VxWorks firmware, but they run Tomato or DD-WRT.
my Linksys WRT300N V1 is running DD-WRT, shit's pretty awesome.
DD-WRT is the shit.
Am I really the only one who thinks Linksys is shitty? I used to have to reset it every 2 weeks because it was crashing my internet and there was some sort of "error" in the line of it.

You have to run Custom firmware for it to run properly.

How messed can the design be if it only works (properly) on custom firmware?

My old D-Link 502-T burns like a bitch after 5 hours, it's horrible.
Got a TP-Link TD-W8960N with double custom watercooling, still randomly shuts down if uTorrent is on :buddy:

Well Linksys firmware uses VxWorks architecture, and DD-WRT is Linux... you do the math. (Linux runs better)
My WRT54GS is still warm, after being on for a month straight now.

What math? I don't know how to compute that.

And who needs a new router?
Mine's as old as Windows XP and it's a B type linksys.
It's been hacked by neighbors and horribly abused and overused.

When nosy neighbors access your network the only names to trust are Cain & Abel.

Personal experiences with one or two failing products doesn't make a whole brand bad.

By the way guys, this isn't a fucking "post your netspeed" thread.
everybody i know who has linksys, has had to call customer service to get their shit working, and it was a long process (like a few hours on the phone).
i have belkin in my house, we used to get lots problems, but after learning how everything works with the router, i can pretty much fix anything with it. i'd rather not have to though.
i have a netgear wireless adapter, bought for 10 bucks from a friend. i figured it would work with windows 7 and i found out the hard way that there are no drivers that work for win7. fucking gay

How the fuck do you fuck up following an isntall wizard while setting up a router?

Bought a Linksys WRT54GL. I don't know about the stock firmware. But I flashed DD-WRT on that bitch and had it running as a wireless bridge in 30 minutes. Mostly because I kept making mistakes while configuring it, and I was retarded and forget that I didn't set a DNS server in my network settings on my PC. "Herp derp I can see other PCs on the network but internet dun werk".
No problems since then.
