I just asked my remote shell host to setup sshd on port 443 and piped everything via the resulting SOCKS proxy
The filtering at my school has blocked wikipedia pages about wildfires under drugs. It ended up messing up two classes worth of student's work.
My school filter is worse. Name a porn site, it's not blocked. But puush is, for whatever reason.
My old highschool had some pretty strict filtering, enough that teachers could apply to use an alternate proxy that would not filter anything. Interestingly, if you told Firefox to auto-detect proxy settings, it would use the unfiltered one. The admins were fully aware, but they figured anyone able to do that would be smart enough not so abuse it.
Ha, Firefox? We have to use IE7. Tabs are disabled and can't be enabled. Doing a research project generally means having quite a few windows open, which is just a pain. Oh, and the computers run the business version of Windows 7, which they can't keep up with because they're crap and from another school, so about once every 2 hours, the computer will restart itself, this doesn't happen on every computer though, and most people haven't realised it happens, so there's a lot of complaints about lost work. Drugs was another keyword that was blocked, science lessons generally weren't in the IT rooms unless we were doing sex education (part of biology, apparently.) I'll try to get some content on Wednesday.
Yeah, anyone here good with repairing 27 year old laptops? Flip switch, nothing happens, even when plugged in, no lights, nothing. not sure if a relay inside switches or if it's the switch. When plugged in, nothing happens, no lights or anything, slight change in the noise the power brick makes, so that must mean it's pulling something. Any ideas?
what is this magic, being allowed to take notes on an electronic device?? shit, some teachers in my school used to get pissed when you printed out your essays (then they would insult my shit handwriting)
My writing hasn't improved since probably grade 3. My high school teachers were really happy when I started doing assignments and notes on my laptop.
my high school had pretty strict filtering and locked down pretty much everything, most people would use online proxies (then bitch when their facebook accounts got hijacked) I used a java based ssh client and just tunneled all my web traffic through that(exe's were blocked)
My HS blocked Firefox one year. I got around it by renaming to "notfirefox.exe". Aside from that the actual websites they blocked were somewhat reasonable (anything "social", including Facebook and I believe Facepunch, game websites, porn). They basically had a policy of "you're going to use these computers for schoolwork goddammit". Although apparently their answer to idiots looking up porn and shit on Google Images is to block the entirety of Google Images. We got around it somehow in senior year though, I forget how.
That's some pretty terrible group policy editing. Sounds like they just filtered by name in AppLocker: [t]http://i.imgur.com/LlpRuav.png[/t]

They also had a non-functional install of Firefox - they had tried to get it working, but the librarians couldn't figure it out and complained about students asking them questions and got it mostly-removed (ie. they took the icon off the desktop and didn't finish getting it working). So you had to literally install Firefox to get around the proxies. A sufficient hurdle, apparently. Chrome was only around during my senior year; I don't recall whether or not it worked as well.
I just asked my remote shell host to setup sshd on port 443 and piped everything via the resulting SOCKS proxy
I did that too. Fun.
And if someone doesn't like Metro that much I recommend buying Start is back or at least I think there's an update which makes the start menu come back but I doubt Micro$oft would allow such a thing.
What an idiot.

Was I not an active sipwicker at this point? I came to hardware late in the game.
I think I lurked around then
On a somewhat similar note, I was talking with a friend on steam lastnight about how shit our government (uk) was and then it came into the discussion what FP members should be in our Government. So here is the list: -Prime Minister: Gran PC -Chancellor of the Exchequer: Turing (used to handling a lot of money) -Secretary of State for Work and Pensions: Binary (would replace state pensions with BFL ASICs for the Elderly) -Lord Chancellor Secretary of State for Justice: Tratzz (after doing the right thing in the VistaPOWA incident) -Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport: Brt (obvious) -Secretary of State for Education: Amiga OS (always moaning about college) -Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs: Pepper (because peppers are food) -Secretary of State for International Development: MaxOfS2D -Minister for Women and Equality: Shadaez -Chief Whip in the House of Commons: Wingless -Secretary of State for Defence: Warship (well he's a warship) -Secretary of State for Transport: Deeps (always going on about his truck)

fun fact: in my school right now (left my flash drive at home so can't work). it blocks fp if you go onto the homepage, but if you type in fp_read.php it won't block it :v: Uses a dedicated bloxx server and some tru-view thing.

I'll be defending our country by blowing hot air from Pentium 4 computers onto our enemies.
