Maya is for sculptures and movies and artsy bullshit like that. 3DSMAX is for technical stuff. To my knowledge, Maya lacks many of the technical extensions, and isn't really fit for game modeling except for characters and creatures.

And Maya wasn't built by Autodesk, they bought it long after it was successful as an application.
