Full disclosure: I work for Google on the Chrome OS team.
Is the food as good as they say?
cant wait for google forcing people to pay for the 1TB of storage they became dependent on over the course of 3 years to hilariously backfire

Once it expires, your files won't go anywhere, you'll just not be able to upload new ones until you renew.

It's fantastic, yes! Microkitchens are pretty awesome too. I have a morning ritual of pulling myself an espresso in the MK before starting work... :v:
hm yes i cant see how forcing users to delete all of their files to upload new ones would turn anyone off
Microsoft Office?
Google Drive. You can thank me later, it's amazing, I know.
Steam?
Okay, so for hardcore gaming perhaps a Chromebook isn't appropriate.
iTunes?
I don't miss this at all. There are a boatload of online music apps, I like Spotify but there are many others.
Notepad++?
There are many online editors, like Cloud9, but I like nano in a Secure Shell tab personally.
Also worth mentioning this is a super Linux friendly device. On launch day we submitted a whole bunch of code to support the device (trackpad, touchscreen etc) to the mainline Linux kernel.
There's also a handy legacy boot mode so you possibly even make Windows work I guess...
ChromeOS is nice but seriously, the Pixel is just not worth the $1300 with what comes under the hood. I almost bought the Acer chromebook since my local bestbuy had an "open box" in mint condition for $212.
Yah sorry Hexxeh. I'm not buying it. That refers to what you're saying and to this $500 laptop plus a high res display adding an $800 premium.

It's worth it to some people, but perhaps not you.

This stuff is kinda standard, Dropbox does the same thing last time I checked (except annoyingly, it doesn't notify you, so you don't find out your files stopped syncing until you needed them).
when was the last time dropbox sold hardware with a pathetic amount of local storage so users who bought their poorly thought out product would become dependent on an expensive service
of course, i guess it's hard to care about the 300 people that buy this
It's worth it to some people, but perhaps not you.
I'm curious as to who you mean by this. And I'm not trying to be rude, but I really don't know how people could justify the price on this. Why is it being sold for so much? I really, really can't imagine the display costs that much to produce, does it?
Now, if you're you and you get it for free, fuck yeah, it's still cool as all hell. But not $1300 cool. Not even with 1TB of cloud storage - some of us still have data limits on our home internet.
Wait, you work for Google? That explains so much.
Mind if I ask a question off-topic? Have you had any experience with the Glass team? Because that looks like something I'd be interested in buying.

There are people for whom the Chromebook model of doing everything on the web works great. No need to worry about updates or breaking things (in software). But they want premium hardware. That type of person is going to love Pixel.
I didn't buy mine, no, but I will be buying an extra to stick in my front room most likely for guests to use.

You've made your opinion clear, you can stop now.

hm yes let's just turn hardware and software into one giant hugbox
sorry i'm challenging your ~opinions~~

So how good IS the screen?
It has a high resolution and PPI sure, but how's the contrast and colour reproduction?

There's being critical and then there's being a jerk. Criticise away, but don't be a jerk.

Crazy good. There's a demo video that comes with it called "Timescapes" which shows it off fantastically. But it's difficult to describe how good it is without you just seeing it. I've got mine side by side with the latest retina Macbook Pro on my desk, and I prefer the Pixel by some considerable margin.
Is it easily repairable? Is it possible to swap out the internal SSD for something else at all?
Is it easily repairable? Is it possible to swap out the internal SSD for something else at all?
Sadly no, I believe the SSD isn't actually socketed, it's part of the main board. But obviously the device comes with a 2 year warranty, so if something fails within that time, you should be covered.
It's not the easiest of devices to disassemble, by the way. You can see a photo of the internals here: http://www.chromium.org/chromium-os/developer-information-for-chrome-os-devices/chromebook-pixel
My interest in getting one just got dashed in half. I love the hardware but between the price and lack of an ability to replace the internal storage with something larger really puts me off... Rrgh, so conflicted.
I can't really afford one anyway.
Thank you for answering my questions, however.
You can fit an SD card almost flush in the socket. You can buy SD cards in crazy sizes (up to 256GB these days). Might be an interesting solution.
I dunno. Could be cool, but I don't think the world's ready for what is essentially a mobile terminal yet.
We've got decades of infrastructure and technological advancement before something like this is really, truly viable for everyone, I think. Doesn't mean it's not a step in the right direction, though.
EDIT: Also... You didn't see my other comment, did you?

Somebody has to make the first step. :v:

Indeed! Which is why I'm really interested in all the hardware stuff Google's doing now. Am I correct in thinking it took them getting almost edged out by Apple to start working on their own stuff, or have they been at this far longer than we're aware?

Watch the launch video, should answer your question.

Sorry but I have a hard time believing the Pixel has a better display than the Macbook. That increase in pixel density is almost negligible, and Google has a track record of putting some of the worst displays calibration wise in their products.

Yeah, but those SD cards are almost the cost of the laptop.. Plus, I/O speeds from the SD cards would probably be pretty terrible.

You can get a 128GB card for like £70.

i flip a coin 100 times and they all land tails
is the next one more or less likely to land on heads
(also, this is a much more expensive product than any other google play sold device, and seems like this is the beginning of "who needs oems")
Alternately, you can just use cloud storage like the thing's designed for, and locally cache what you need.

I meant the only 256GB cards I could find are like $600 :v:

yeah but we're still not quite at a point where there's free wifi everywhere, unless you live in a major city or something.

Which is why I think this thing, and the entire Chromebook line, really, needs a 4G radio.

Er..there IS an LTE version, its just $150 more expensive. And then you have the costs of verizon's data service on top of that. (if you want more than 100MB per month..which you likely do, as I'd probably use that much just by reading the average tech news site.) And you're STILL fucked if you're in an area with poor coverage (which is surprisingly plentiful)
