Oh god this thing is raping my HD4870 :byodood:

The fan is spinning at 100%, I can't hear anything :argh:
[editline]12th June 2011[/editline]
Now it's running at 80c
Is it really worth it for 80-90 Mhash/s?
80c is a healthy temperature for a full load
see if you can turn down the aggression (what miner are you using)
So what is the purpose of mining, what does it calculate?
80c is a healthy temperature for a full load

I don't really mind the temperature, it's a HD 4870 after all. If I OC it, it's going to melt :v:
I'm using GUIMiner since I'm too lazy to use a simple command line, what I'm wondering is if 90 Mhash/s is worth it.
So what is the purpose of mining, what does it calculate?
mining uses your graphics card to try to force a lock open. when the lock opens riches go to everyone who help.
at least i think thats how it works...
I find this pretty nice way to pay for small stuff.
About 18 hours of mining, got 0.51 BTC in my wallet, 0.102 verified funds. 0.22 BTC spent as a test on prepaid Xbox live 1-month subscription code.
so who pays the electric bill at your place?
Specs?
Mining with my 5850, getting around 300 MHash/s now.

That's basically how it works.
The workload is completely arbitrary, the only purpose is to regulate the speed at which new coins enter the market.

Then what is the point of it?
This will crash and this will fail.

Nice edit there. "Companies will not support a currency that means absolutely nothing."

I like the part under the "Myth" section.
It sounds like an angsty teen trying to defend the viability of anarchy.
Do you not see the fact that a currency entirely based on futile busywork will not last.

Haha, yeah, right. Because anyone in this thread is stupid enough to see this as a long term investment.

Was just about to violate my visa by ordering a truck load of 6990's
Waait, wait wait.
You're telling me that if I buy 6x6990's and xfire them in 2 computers, I could be getting $4000 a month for doing nothing?
What is this magic that is Bitcoin?
Sure. But realize you spent $8000 in computer hardware and $2000 a month in electricity to do this.
Plus the market isn't stable, so it might be $4000 a month one month, but only $1000 another month. You are better off investing into the REAL stock market.

My electricity bill's included in my monthly pay, so I'm already pulling +800W 24/7 for free.
I'll run my GTX275 for a month, see if I'm still interested in it by July.
How the fuck do you spend $2000 a month in electricity
$2000/30/24 = ~$2.75 per hour
a high electricity bill estimate would be 20c/kWH
2.75/0.20 = 13.75 kW
you'd have to be constantly using 13750 watts for the entire month
(a 6990 is unable to take more than 375W)

i'm pretty sure he was being sarcastic about the price of electricity
but his point still stands: for those mining without having to be a part of paying the utility bill, this is truly free profit, but for the individuals that have to pay it instead, it's going to be a nightmare
i don't know if a lot of people are getting it that the means of profiting are draining away that potential profit
I'm tempted to purchase bitcoins when the market is down then sell them a few hours later when it is up again.
I'll need to monitor the market for several days though so I don't end up buying them when they are high right before a drop.
Has there been a generally steady rise and fall in prices or has the value of a bitcoin been completely random between day in and day out? Does it tend to be lower at certain hours?
if anyone has any better sources for bitcoin candlestick charts let me know, because these are hard to use and the site is unresponsive half the time for loading charts (getting 502 errors), but it looks like it's all over the place
June 8th saw volatile conditions all day through until the morning of the 9th, and then it's relatively quiet until around the start of june 11th where you can see some incredible extreme trends popping up

as a trader i would not feel comfortable at anytime entering this market, this is like the markets on a friday where it's capable of some weird things
so who pays the electric bill at your place?
Last time I checked power didn't cost billions of euros in Finland.

it's obviously costing SOMEONE in your house money

Like its been said you would be better off doing quick trading with a market like this versus seriously investing into it...
I.E. buy a few BCE when its low temporarily, then later on sell when it peaks. Instant $30-$50
How many blocks do I need to download before I can start mining bitcoins?
5850's Power consumption is about 170W max if Google result tells the truth.
170W * 18h = 3060W = 3.06kW
Price of electricity per kW is about 0.10€ so the 18h mining cost 0.306€, while it earned me 0.5 BTC which is now worth 10.075$
Am I right?
Did anyone try this on a dedicated server or vps yet? Or is mining on the CPU really THAT useless?

It is useless.
Horribly terribly useless

i want to know if this works on a virtual box. since it doesnt really have a graphics card i am wondering if there is a way or not...
[editline]12th June 2011[/editline]
where would i make offers to trade TF2 hats for coins?
i was kinda guessing here, but not 100% sure...
and the bitcoin forums require you to make 5 posts and be online for FOUR HOURS to be able to post in the selling forum.

Of course a basic command line cpu miner would work - they're just slow as fuck apparently :saddowns:

You are forgetting that the GPU isn't the only thing that draws power when a computer is on.
http://www.antec.outervision.com/
Use that. It's meant for figuring out what the wattage would be for buying a PSU, but it still works for general power draw.
Also, is that 170W power draw per hour, or per minute/second?

the virtualbox runs windows 7 i beleive...
