Wait, so if you do manage to make one block, thats basically $1000 (roughly)?

Yeah, but good luck with that.
How long does it take to make a block?
Also can someone recommend me a good amd card that works with pci x16?
With most cards it isn't worth the heat output and power usage.

It's random. It's just the chance of you generating a key that matches a block, IIRC.

i got tired of the fan spinning all the time when it was running so i just stopped doing it. not really worth the noise
You need to install some beta-drivers from AMD website for OpenCL.
Does it work in Europe/Estonia?
As getting the money, in paypal or so?

at 200MHash/s you have about 150 days before you have 50% chance of finding one, and after 455 days you have a 95% chance of having found one.
I'm having some trouble connecting to mining pools. I've forwarded port 8333, I've even set my PC as a DMZ on my router, but I'm still getting connection issues.
Can anyone help me?

don't have to forward anything, you're probably putting your password or username in wrong. remember it's the worker name that goes there, not the username. also make sure you're choosing the right pool, and go into the console tab and see what it's saying

Oh, ok :smith:
Sorry, I'm getting "Problems communicating with bitcoin RPC" rather than the mining pool.

Even with a powerful network of friends and myself we only manage to discover one a block a week.
Being one of the slower miners I have only earned 2btc. May not sound like much but the btc high price of the day was $32 USD :D
Alright, thanks for the link! Joined the slush's pool. Going at 109mhashs/s!
Should I be mining in another pool?

the price of one could be $4, it's free money! if i can use it to buy things on certain websites then fuck yes
Going to build a new computer early next week, but I was going to get a 560 Ti.
After seeing this though, it almost makes sense to get a 6950 so I can make some more money from this. Suggestions?

So you and your friends are making $1500 a week? Thats horrible. [sp]/sarcasm[/sp]

Split up between multiple people, and each person only earns what they contribute. On our last (our first) block discovered I contributed 4% and got 2 coins, since then my friends who earned most of the money have now bought better computers and are now outpacing me, I am probably only contributing like .05% now and probably won't be seeing much bitcoin for myself.
I hope to eventually make a new mining machine based off of one of these machines: https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Mining_rig
im confused. its a virtual currency, but you can use a program to generate it?
can someone please explain this to me? i watched their video but im still horrendously confused...
[editline]10th June 2011[/editline]
by program to generate i mean mining
It's like real money. It's not really worth anything but it can be used to trade for other things.
It's just a big cycle of trading. I think.

You run a program, it does bullshit work to try and guess-and-check until it hits a predetermined number, at which point you get money. It's a gimmick- the network is set up to produce a certain number of new coins per day, you just waste processor/GPU cycles to get to be the lucky recipient.

Same here, I've been reading through the wiki and I don't really get it. Is it really worth the electric cost + wear and tear on the hardware to be running some number cruncher all day for weeks on end? Its kinda interesting but whats the catch? It just takes a real long time to generate a coin? Has anyone really made any decent amount of $$$ off it?
Is it really worth the electric cost + wear and tear on the hardware to be running some number cruncher all day for weeks on end?
Not really, and it becomes worth less and less as more computers join in and you get a progressively smaller slice of the pie.
Anybody have any small groups that I can join? I have a feeling that even leaving me on this "Slush's Pool" for weeks won't net me even .1 bitcoin.
What's the best trading site and the best mining pool in your opinion? Or does anyone have a group I could join?
we need a facepunch mining pool :v:
waiting for the client to download all my blocks. how many blocks are there?
[editline]10th June 2011[/editline]
can you mine in multiple pools at once?
129899 blocks
also yes, you need multiple workers though, and that'll cut your mining power in half depending on how many workers you have
you can see how many blocks there is at http://blockexplorer.com/q/getblockcount
im only at 54k blocks.
there are 129 thousand blocks.
this is gonna take aaaaaaaaaages.

HOW DID YOU KNOW I WAS GOING TO POST THE BLOCK COUNT?
So nvidia cards suck for mining, correct?

says 1 bitcoin is worth 24.70 USD.
i guess i know how to price anything i might do :v:
