This answers nothing. What is a problem, why are we trying to solve them, and what does this have to do with a virtual currency?
We're trying to solve them because they're worth actual money.
You know how FOLDING@HOME solves problems for cancer research? It's just like that, except you're earning money.

I think the problems are also to control inflation.
i'm mining with the BTC guild and what do i input for my wallet in the website's profile settings?
Scratch that, the difficulty is to control inflation. The problem is just the work that gets you the money.
Automerge broke. :saddowns:

Open the bitcoin client proper and generate your account.
Fuck.
ATI HD 5850 1Gb running on Phoenix, ~255 Mhash/sec.
Fan speed 100% and temperature 64°C, wont probably be sleeping with this on.
ugh its at 100 thousand blocks. with about 25 thousand blocks to go.
urgh this is taking forever. at least i only have to do it once...
[editline]10th June 2011[/editline]
i just had a brilliant idea. sell hats for coins.
ITS A BRILLIANT PLAN!

Did you buy the 5850 specifically for mining?
Did you buy the 5850 specifically for mining?
Who buys new parts just to mine? Is it really worth it?
[editline]11th June 2011[/editline]
No
Who buys new parts just to mine? Is it really worth it?
Yes. The 5850 is one of the best cards to buy for a mining rig. It gets like 2.5MHash/$1 as I've heard.
[editline]1[/editline]
Rather, one of the best cards to buy to start out. Mhash/s wise there are, it's just that the 5850 is a really good balance between cost and power.

this guy has good stuff, if you like rings...
no prices though...
I'm not CPU mining.

Quite the opposite, actually. But I'd like to get rid of the massive bottleneck my CPU is on everything else.

Oh, my bad. You should probably have enough to swap BC for enough cash in less than a month.
-snip-
fixed the problem myself

Every group that solves one gets the worth of one block, or 50 bitcoins. 1 bitcoin is about 25USD. if somebody solves it themselves (not likely to happen though) they get approx $1,250.

On the bitcoin wiki they have a setup for a dedicated rig that can generate 2.1 Ghash/s. It costs about $1.55/Mhash though.

Get a couple of those and you'll be making bank.
Get a couple of those and you'll be making bank.
They cost about $3k each. Worth the price, though.
Though, you'll only be pulling in 0.7MHash/$1.

Sorry. In other news, I finally made .01 BTC! That's about 24 cents! It is pretty awesome how you can get money for basically letting your computer do it's thing. Fortunately, I have a cooler master HAF case, which is the fucking bomb.

I'm on a 4850x2 with the slave one completely fucked up. I'm only getting 70MHash/s. :saddowns:

Have you heard the story about the moderator in late '09 who traded 10k coins for a couple pizzas when they were worth nothing?
He also has a speed of ~4.7 Ghash/s
