I'm not sure about AMD's naming schemes, but being a former intel employee and living near 2 intel plants, I have noticed they like to name their chip series' after places here in Oregon. I have always wondered if AMD does the same, being based in California.
The AMD Phenoms are named after Stars. The Opterons are named after well known cities or places like Istanbul or Barcelona.
Can't wait to see some external benchmarking on these.
I wonder if there are any applications that are optimized for this...
Grr! And I am just about to get my AMD 965! (Well 955, but we all know I won't be leaving it below 965 clocks)
Glad(os) it is still AMD3 though.
I might have to get one of these when my 955 stops being amazing.
I want to know if my M4A78 EM can handle this
I have heard rumors of these only being ddr3 capable can anybody prove or disprove this.

No, but if DDR3 provides the substantial boost in performance it did with the i7's then I'm going to go for a full motherboard replacement.

When I say no, I mean I can't confirm or disprove it.
Clearing that up...

KK I have just heard rumblings about it.
Thuban is confirmed to be compatible with AM2+ boards.

good
Oh damnit, i bought a Phenom II 965 x4 just 2 weeks ago
ill still go with an i7 940. I heard that they overclock better than the 920 and generally have better performance. Also so i can buy the cheap i9s once they start coming out.
PS: New intel six core is i7 980X

there has been a thread about it for like a week now

its going to be a million dollars!!!
its ~$1100 on newegg now this is about the AMD 6 core not intel 6 core
X6 1055T 2,8ghz will only be 199usd.
And i bet it will beat quad i7's in cpu heavy stuff for only a fraction of the price.
Dont run your mouth until the benches are out.
Just a friendly piece of advice/warning.
This will make my AMD Phenom 9550 obsolete. :P
At the time I couldn't afford anything better.
Where the fuck did the rule of thumb - "Numbers of processor cores are always powers of two" go? Before some time, multiprocessor computers always had 2, 4, 8, ... 64 (CRAY) processors. Then AMD came with that silly 3 core one, and since then, they added 6 core ones.
the three core ones actually had 4, people who bought it found out how to unlock that last core. AMD did a dick move by locking that last core.
This seems awesome, probably gonna upgrade to this next time I upgrade my cpu

Who gives a shit.
"Oh no I can't sperg on my system built entirely out of powers of two ARMAGEDDON HAS ARRIVED"

At least the first ones were actually quads with one core faulty.

Yup and check out that attractive price
Definitely a 6 core for the masses.

Thuban is a star, otherwise known as Alpha Draconis.
Also I read somewhere Nehalem was named after the state park, not the river. And I figured Prescott was Prescott, AZ.

Also, I noticed that the prices of the current Phenom IIs have been going down fairly quickly in the past few weeks. I guess this explains why.
