• I'm seriously thinking about going back from Windows 7 to XP

Clean install + Correct Drivers = Win, you're obviously doing something wrong.
I don't get what is with all the XP hate. Its a perfectly good OS for older systems.
I use vista because it's what's on my PC and I'm poor, and I don't remember the last time it crashed. Yeah, it's not a great OS and 7 is probably a fair bit better, but it definitely isn't as bad as you seem to think it is; it's perfectly usable and I definitely prefer it to XP.
In the early days, it really made life suck for many. i haven't had a more difficult system. I know it's fine now, but i've moved on to seven and i won't go back ever again. same goes for the faithful, dependable XP.
Using Windows XP x64 Professional (the only x64 Windows XP variant), or x86 (original versions, Windows XP x64 is really just a Server 2003-based OS) with latest drivers will give you better frame rates than Vista or 7. It's why I haven't moved from my XP x64. You've got to be kidding me if you think Vista or 7 will produce better frames when it's desktop environment uses a rendering system tied directly to your graphics card. The rendering system is disabled when you play a game, but it's processes still run. [editline]01:45PM[/editline] You SHOULD move on to Windows 7 if you want better support and the whole DX11 jazz. It just happens to be the only support problem I've had was not being able to play Just Cause 2, due to it being a Windows Vista/7 only deal, unless you're buying a console, but that's irrelevant to the conversation.
its you're choice.
I upgraded from Windows Vista to 7. Ever since then, I've been getting lower framerates in every game that I played. (Sims 3, Mass effect 2, Oblivion) I've done every thing that I could. I've updated all of my drivers, I've tried to downgrade my drivers, but that didn't work. I've tried to set higher priority for the game's processes so that they would use more memory. Nothing worked. I've searched all over the internet for a solution, asked in many forums. I could find nothing that could help me. Now I'm considering going back to XP. XP has never given me any problems, not as much as Vista or 7 did. As far as I know, XP consumes less system resources. The only thing that's stopping me is that fact that I like some of the features that Windows 7 has.
Try the classic theme, i like the look of it and it improves performance a bit.
its you're choice.
Who is choice?
The rendering system is disabled when you play a game, but it's processes still run.
That 30MB of RAM sure eats into my framerate. ps there's a reason nobody uses xp x64: it has horrible driver support and if anything will give you a lower framerate than 7 x64.
I noticed that the audio management of 7 effected my performance rate, so check your sound settings for any equalizer/volume normalisation/whatever you set up in the driver and disable it. See if it works, if not well then format and reinstall.
Drivers are improving for Windows Vista and Windows 7 but it's my understanding from what I hear from a few game designers that display drivers whether they are ATI, nVidia or Intel chips, aren't quite solid in terms of performance problems. I for one will be using XP 32 until Microsoft discontinues support for it. ;)

You will really hate yourself for being stuck in the past for so long, I'm sure of it.
I have 7 (just recently changed) and so far I think it's pretty nice. I got it mainly so that my GPU could use DX11 and for just cause 2. It runs fine in all games beause i took into consideration the troubles people have with RAM and upgraded to 4GB prior to formatting. Xp was nice though, it did take some getting used to considering i've been using xp all my life. Xp is also used in every buisness i've seen, so it's good to know about it job wise. Another thing about it is that it leaves you to do whatever you want, for example the NTbackup allows you to backup anything, but the win7 equivelant only backs up what IT wants to back up. Bit bad, but at least you can patch NT backup into win7. The idea that the operating system chooses things for you is a little annoying to say the least.

I prefer to wait until they get most of the bugs out before I'm bumped forward. I'll surely hate having to learn all the various UI changes. :P
I can't even find one big bug in 7. 7 is more stable than XP.
Using windows xp is like using windows 3.1 on xp's launch day That is how old xp is
Windows 7... isn't as tired... as Windows XP is.
I see what you did there.
Crappy laptop is crappy.
You can run Windows 7 ultimate very well on a netbook. :downs:
XP, Vista, and 7 all suck, IMO. If they had a Ubuntu version with support for Windows programs (and not this defective wine BS) I would wipe Vista right off my computer.
