You have to restore in DFU mode to get out of the 3014 error.
I'm gonna wait for the jailbreak, but what iPhone do you have? Can someone with the 3GS confirm that multitasking works good now?

Are you trying to install the current version (3.1.3) or 4.0 GM?
Try putting on 3.1.3 in DFU.
im assuming we are all trying to put on 4.0 GM

Nope, cause apps have to be written specifically to enable multitasking. iOS 4 isn't "offically" out, so why would they bother?

No I didn't. However, are you trying to upgrade?
I couldn't get mine to perform an upgrade from 3.1.2, so I went straight to 4.0 and restored from a backup.

I have the same problem. The error comes up as soon as it goes to validating/contacting with apple. Tried DFU. Current version 3.1.3

That could either be a driver error (communicating with the device causes it to have a hissy fit) or a problem communicating with the iTunes auth server.
Try uninstalling iTunes 9.2, restart, install iTunes 9.2, restart and then restore.
Comes up for me at the end of the extraction of the .ipsw file
