Oh, I guess I have a story for this thread now. I go to Hunterdon Central Highschool. Freshmen :(. So there is this kid in my PE class. I talked to him a bit and the conversation moved to computers. Kinda like a little test I decided to ask him how to dual boot XP+Vista. What a mistake. He proceeded to explain to me why you cannot do that. According to him XP & Vista are both the same operating system so they cannot be installed on the same computer because you don't have enough of the right memory. I was all like  and it ended with me deciding that he was retarded and ignoring him.

My computer must be really screwed now :( Edit: He might have been thinking of the two OS in one partition case, which wouldn't work.
The thing I really hate is when I say I built a computer and the people at school, think that I got the pieces of metal and shit to build the case and made every cable by hand. :science:

Well, my school principal (who APPARENTLY went to uni for a computer sciences degree) has the school wireless set up with WEP, and won't let students use it because he has all the school district servers on it without a VPN. That means all the school records, for the whole district. And he seems to brush it off when I tell him how bad that can go. Even after I told him about NeoPwn. I wish I could get him to set up WPA and get those network drives only over VPN. But alas, over time everybody learns the school tech department is run by morons. Another example is that there are STILL computers in the school where if you log in, you are an admin. Doesn't matter what account. And I'm after telling them several times.
I'm not intolerant of computer illiterates, myself. I'm only intolerant of the people who think they know when they don't.
I'm like that but if I was not I would not be able to fix computers like I do today.

They are obligated to protect your information and the school could face sanctions for failing to fulfill their duties.
Well, my friend calls a terabyte a "tigabyte", pisses me off soo bad :(
People annoy me when they call the PC tower the 'hard drive'.
People annoy me when they call the PC tower the 'hard drive'.
People annoy me when they call the computer the 'PC tower'. Edit:
For me, there's only one person, besides a few of the teachers. Everyone else I know uses computers only for Myspace, Facebook, and Youtube. Kind of sad really, when you bring in a thumb drive with Firefox on it and half of the students in the class think you're trying to put a virus on the school computers, even when the said computers are locked up like a drum and have Faronics Deep Freeze on them.
I took a 8GB thumb drive to school and some chav pulled it out of my computer. So I said "Hey gimme that back, it cost me £25 and it's got important stuff on it." and some girl said "£25 for a piece of plastic?". I facepalmed and went and grabbed it back off the guy.
Sorry about the massive bump. But I didn't want to make a new thread regarding such a similar topic. Anyways. My friend Benjamin recently gave me 280 dollars to buy him PC parts. I did so, and finally the parts arrived. So me and Ben decided to go hang with our friend Danny, and I'd build his new PC there. I got everything all nice and hooked up, and began installing the OS. (Vista Ultimate in this case.) Now, being the anal retentive bastard I am, a while back I made a custom Vista installation using V-Lite. Trying to conserve space, I removed Internet Explorer (Which is shit anyways), from the installation. When the PC finally started for its first time, I realized that I had no way to browse the internet and retrieve drivers without a browser. Ordinarily, I have firefox in my archives, but this was not my computer. Thinking fast, I asked Danny's dad to use his PC to download firefox and dump it in his shared folder so that I could install it to get the drivers. He then asked to see Ben's PC. Not thinking, I complied. As he sat down, he said, "Internet Explorer will still be there, regardless if you removed it from the installation." I blinked. "I made my own custom installation; I wanted to decrease size, and having firefox always archived, I didn't bother to include it. The files just aren't there." Realizing that he had lost that argument, he snapped, "Internet is a VITAL part of the OPERATING SYSTEM." He droned out OPERATING SYSTEM like some kindergarten teacher trying to teach a student with autism. I stared at him; he was being unprofessional, and pretty much an ass. I stated, calmly, "Internet Explorer is not required for windows to operate correctly." "NO. You need TRAINING. It is a VITAL part of the OPERATING SYSTEM." He rolled his eyes behind his glasses, and went on with some bullshit rant about how he had been doing this for the past 20 years, before I was born, etc. I fucking hate people like this.
I love it how most people here don't realize that "Giga" is really 1024 units. I.e. 2GB = 2048 MB != 2000 MB. I'm not saying all of you do this, but when I see someone complaining about illiterate people and they use the incorrect figures it makes me:
"Giga" is really 1,000,000,00 units...
4 096 MB= 4GB
4096 rounded up to the nearest hundred = 4.1 GB.
4096 rounded up to the nearest hundred = 4.1 GB.
No, you illiterate fool. 512MB = .5GB 1024MB = 1GB 2048MB = 2GB 3072MB = 3GB 4096MB = 4GB (512x8 = 4096 :downs:) 1024GB = 1TB 2048GB = 2TB ...And so on. There's no rounding involved. 4096MB is 4GB.
How to tell someone's computer illiterate: They say "How much memory " Rather than hard drive space, RAM, or any other memory.
There's a 70 year old man on my course here at uni. We're doing a module called "English Language in the Digital Age" and he's completely and totally computer illiterate. So he turns to me for help. Every. Freaking. Time.
Just be nice and help the guy. :)
Not saying I don't help the guy, but he's the kind of guy that goes "I don't understand any of this" from the word go, in that annoying way where they interupt you as you're trying to explain.
Me: Hey, I ordered my PSU and Mobo Them: What's that? Me: Facepalm :geno:
I don't really mind when people don't have down specifics about computer hardware. I mostly just get annoyed when they have absolutely no idea how to work a computer. Like the distinction between browsing files on the hard drive and browsing the internet should not be a confusing one.
I was listening to a couple CompSci students the other day who made me very proud to be a CompE. The main points of their conversation were that you can't partition hard drives without losing all your data, and that windows will explode if you go online without anti-virus software. Plus some random comment about Computing Science being all about programing.
In a way, he's actually right, a lot of programs unfortunately use IE (for god knows what), including Steam and WoW.
Heh. This would matter to me, if I'd had a single problem in the past 2 years. Which I have not.
My friend keeps saying that the Playstation 3 is better to play games on than the computer, and I asked why. He said: "It has better graphics since you can have HD." :geno: (User was banned for this post (Reason: Page stretching.) [event] 141141 [/event])
Computer illiterate people are starting to frustrate me. My friend is convinced that USB memory sticks are programmed to fail after x time. He said if you buy a new memory stick today and don't use it for 50 years AND THEN try and use it, it won't work. I tried to tell him it was to do with the limitations of flash memory (~100,000 read/write operations). I don't know what it is, but I can't put what I know about computers into understandable words. I know what I'm on about but other people are like :sigh:.

I hate people who are convinced they are right and won't listen to your arguments. Or people who doesn't WANT to understand. Or people who THINK they know shit about computers.
