I can't stand talking to computer illiterate people about computers.
Computer illiterate people are starting to frustrate me.
My friend is convinced that USB memory sticks are programmed to fail after x time.
He said if you buy a new memory stick today and don't use it for 50 years AND THEN try and use it, it won't work.
I tried to tell him it was to do with the limitations of flash memory (~100,000 read/write operations).
I don't know what it is, but I can't put what I know about computers into understandable words.
I know what I'm on about but other people are like :sigh:.
The way that I try to explain that is that there are little tiny electrical cells on a flash chip that can be turned on or off, and can only be turned on or off a certain number of times before they wear out... If they don't understand that, it's a lost cause. :v:
Computer illiterates don't bother me too much, unless it's a illiterate that doesn't know he's a illiterate. People who go "LOL HOW DO I GET TO C:" are better than people going "OH MY GOD YOU NOOB LOOK I CAN TYPE THINGS IN BATCH (that he copied off the internet of course)".

He understands it, but the teachers in our technology department (and apparently the exam board) is telling people that all electronics are programmed to break.
This topic is really old. Nice bump.
My friend keeps saying that the Playstation 3 is better to play games on than the computer, and I asked why.
He said: "It has better graphics since you can have HD."
:geno:
Some guy at my school said that, but about the Xbox.
I shoulda pimp slapped him right there, dawg.
Just awesome that you can get way OVER HD on a PC :v:
Even if you just use a 24" PC screen :excited:
I hate people that get Ghz and GB confused.
I can easily live off of 150, maybe less.
Who honestly needs 500 GB?
I have 1 terabyte, it's future proofing. I know you won't need it immediately, but you could use it for business, or maybe you won the fucking lottery and want to buy every game known to man.

I know. I find myself dumbing down everything I say about computers to everyone, but if I do that, then I don't get my point across. Also, my cousin thought that larger hard drives slow down your computer. I set him, and his retarded 'sources' straight, and now he has a terabyte of space, which he is glad to have, as he's filling it up fast.

I know. But some people just can't grasp that concept.
People annoy me when they call the computer the 'PC tower'.
Edit:
I took a 8GB thumb drive to school and some chav pulled it out of my computer. So I said "Hey gimme that back, it cost me £25 and it's got important stuff on it." and some girl said "£25 for a piece of plastic?".
I facepalmed and went and grabbed it back off the guy.
Well that's what it is. It's the most accurate description.
Also, that girl was thick. You shoulda pimp slapped her.
Some of the people in this thread are pretentious dicks I've noticed.
I can build a computer from scratch (did it last week) and do a bit of programming, but I know that some people have difficulty working computers. I'm getting more annoyed at the people in this thread saying "my friend thought GB was GHz so I went ape shit at them and now I don't have friends" than the actual 'idiot' in the first place.
I get annoyed at this dick in my IT class who acts like he could build a computer if you just gave him 5 blocks of different metals and the teacher tells everyone to talk to him if you ever need help, truth is: he fucking failed the last 2 tests we did, can't program for shit, can only do PHP and boasts about it and plays browser games in class except when we do web page creation
Edit:
Some people in my class act like PCs don't have any games for them, they're like "I thought that wasn't on PC" for pretty much any PC game I mention

This. Some people in my school think that the only PC games are the browser based games.
What also pisses me off is, nobody in my class (except the dick mentioned above) is a PC gamer, everyone is a graphics whore but somehow don't know what Crysis is (just as well they are console tards, Crysis is shit anyway)

I feel you man. However I disagree on the point of crysis being shit. It's a good game, but has inflated system specs and not much replay value. Plus the aliens are a bit annoying. It's still a decent game though. Ohh, this reminds me of someone at school who plays on the PS2, and likes to look at a games magazine that I occasionally bring to school. Anyway, he said: 'Hey look, crysis, that has the best graphics EVER!' I replied with 'Ah, yes, but the system specs are a bit high, my PC doesn't run it well.' He then responded with 'What? It ain't even out yet!' I subsequently facepalmed and told him it had been out for around a year and it had been so long since release that they had brought out an expansion pack. He probably thought that since it had awesome graphics it was out on consoles.
I can. My friend thought the monitor was the computer the tower being the modem. I corrected him had a small arguement then he accepted the fact he was wrong.
Easy.
No, you illiterate fool.
512MB = .5GB
1024MB = 1GB
2048MB = 2GB
3072MB = 3GB
4096MB = 4GB (512x8 = 4096 :downs:)
1024GB = 1TB
2048GB = 2TB
...And so on.
There's no rounding involved. 4096MB is 4GB.
Oh no, I omitted 4 megabytes! Alert the presses! :siren:
I convinced this guy that he didn't need to break his hard drive because it had a virus.
He just wanted to break it because he sad he needed to buy a new one.
I told him to reformat and he said "dude, i'll still have the virus. all that does it take your hard drive and put it in a .old file"
Then he told me how he was going to buy a new quad core with 8 gigs of ram, and i asked him about 64 bit and he went "what's that?"
Edit:
People try to convince me that PC gaming is hopeless and I should buy an xbox.
They say that they can't play on a tiny screen, they have to play on their TV screen. They also say that their consoles are HD-er than mine. They tell me that the games for consoles control better then games for computers because you can't control games with a mouse and keyboard. They say that online gaming is stupid because they don't understand it on PC, probably because there's absolutely no matchmaking and they're too stupid to figure it out. Plus, their arguments of exclusivity are useless to me, I hate Halo and I hate Gears of War, and many of the games that I WAS hyped to play turned out to be shit. Plus, I enjoy modification and a piece of hardware that I OWN, not a piece of hardware that's use is completely dependant on if microsoft wants me to play or not.
Once consoles play games without limits, and give a decent control scheme, I'll buy one. I'm sticking to the casual play on my Wii (shit yeah boom blox and mahrio) and more serious gaming on my computer(Gmod, fallout, etc.).

Oh, god, I think I agree with everything you said. Everything.
Well, Gears of war is OK, but nowhere near deserving of the praise they lavish on it, and due to that I hate it, so yeah, I agree with everything in your post.
I can stand illiterate people who listen, I can't tolerate those that think they are correct when they are completely wrong. People who think that GHz across different architecture, such as the P4 vs C2D arguments. I don't want to talk about the number of debates I've had about that. People who say Macs are superior to PC in every way, whom I then am forced to bitch slap with how far behind Macs are in support of new Hardware.
The thing I can't stand most though is people who talk about hacking in a) a derogitory way or b) trying to make them self sound bad ass. We all know that you are a master hacker if you can gain access to your neighbor's unprotected linksys router. I then precede to screw with that person using a remote console whenever they say something stupid. That is a great way to freak people out by the way.
I am glad that one of my schools IT people have concluded that the more locked down they try to make it the more we will try and succeed at breaking it. Though at my homeschool they are still under the assumption that we all want to break them.

Exactly. It's hard to convey in words how annoying that is. You really need to experience it for yourself to get the full taste of the frustration.

Very true. Especially if it's about something that you see/know as blatantly obvious and they are acting like you are talking about time travel.
Anyone that knows shit about computers should know what a POWER SUPPLY and a MOTHERBOARD is.
Maybe they don't know jack shit about computers?

Your friends are wrong if they think macs are superior in every way, but:
Macs are not sold because of the hardware, they are sold because of the software and the design!

I doubt Apple ever sold Macs based on how UBER FAST LOLOLOL they were.
I also doubt that faster always equals better. It depends on how you define "superior", though.

Oh shit, beaten.
There's a 70 year old man on my course here at uni. We're doing a module called "English Language in the Digital Age" and he's completely and totally computer illiterate.
Your friends are wrong if they think macs are superior in every way, but:

They're sold because they're supposedly easier to use, and the people who use and market them are elitist pricks, furthering the belief that macs are superior to PCs in every way.
I can't tolerate those that think they are correct when they are completely wrong.
What's even more aggravating? When I know enough about the particular topic to tell that they're wrong, but not enough to explain to them why they're wrong.
Macs are more of a fad right now ever since Vista got off to a rusty start.
I'm not saying Vista is great, but Apple just exaggerated it and got customers.
Besides, all I have ever seen anyone use a Mac for is music, internet, and Office (or whatever the Mac equivalent is, which is stupid because my entire university uses M$).
As far as computer illiterate people go, the ones willing to listen I spend time with, but those who don't, I make up some shit with jargon they don't understand and that shuts them up pretty well.

As if making up stuff makes you instantly computer literate :raise:
Just reading this thread has given me
lulz, epic lul and rofls
.
EDIT: Fuck you smartness! :argh:
I liked some of the stories poeple had on here, and some of the resopnses to them :v:
I hate these sort of people too, I have a small group of friends who all play games, only me and two other actually know enough about PCs to do anything with them (one of them knows some things, but he's a WoW player, so he don't count :)). And all the chavs in my school (that's everyone else then), knows fuck all about computers, you get hounded for knowing what even a simple thing like a batch file is, or why the computers are so shit (no RAM in them). And when you try and explain the simplest of things to them you get annoyed due to their ignorance, every day I facepalm at least once because of them.
I also have a retarded IT teacher, used to sell websites, no idea how he ended up in Thetford...and he is a complete retard when it comes to computers for some reason, he understands how things wok, but when he explains it he makes a complete fail of himself. The ICT technicians at my school are weird, I have a caffeine addict network nerdling, and a gamer nerdling (yay!), so when I did my work experience there (nowhere in my town would accept me :(), we spent the entire time looking around things like eBuyer for parts, talking about games, and even circumventing the BIOS on a laptop someone BIOS pass worded, which was fun, we just ended up unplugging almost everything to find the CMOS battery.
So yeah....prepare to facepalm if you come to my school, it's bad here.

Hello Mrs Crabapple
sad thing is, nowadays I have two friends who actually know stuff but can't game due to both having Linux and being tight fucks when it comes to money.
