• I can't stand talking to computer illiterate people about computers.

One of my friends unfortunately has taken an interest in computers, its unfortunate because he hasn't the faintest fucking clue about them. Someone came up to him in a lesson and asked where his new RAM should go "Oh yeah, RAM goes in the slots beneath the graphics card, the PCI slots" I face palmed. Good luck getting it in there, later I heard he didn't even tell the guy to make sure his RAM was compatible with the Mobo before buying it... Problem is he doesn't like realising he's wrong so if I tell him that he's wrong he'll be like "Uhh.. yeah I know I was doing it deliberately you see"

If he says "I know" then ask him questions that are more in-depth on the topic, until he admits he didn't know. They just tell him that no one knows everything, that he should be happy when he learns something new.
This reminds me about what happened not too long ago. A computer illiterate relative of mine bought a Laptop thinking that she got a good deal. Well, heres what she bought: Windows XP Intel Core Duo 1.66GHZ 512MB DDR2 RAM Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 850 Ok, this sounds alright for business. Shouldnt be too expensive... But NO, she buys it for 2,600 FUCKING DOLLARS. (£1,300)

I know for a fact I have a issue trying to be "Computers for Dummies", but there are some that are hopeless to try and explain to. I've met a few people who have no clue what the "Power Button" is, all they know is the press a big button to make it come on, then again, they were as dumb as bricks to begin with. My Computer Science teacher (which I'm taking Com. Sci. II next year because that is the absolute only interesting thing at my poor high school, besides ART III, that interests me) is pretty cool, he can figure out software issues(I'll explain that later in the post X_X) and he has asked me a couple of times about hardware. He teaches in a way I understand, which is extremely helpful.(Though, I kinda feel pity for those who can't) This year I have also figured out a interesting thing, I don't like programs that give a massive helping hand that gets in the way. (damned Alice...it may forever burn) I will say, despite the mass amounts of illiterate people, there are a handful that are either around my competence or above me in technology and computers, which a few are merely semi-friends, and somewhat against me (rather not say why to prevent drama spread from the outer reaches of FP) PC gamers at my school(which are VERY few) do hunt us tech savvy people down and ask intelligent questions. I am pretty much the hardware man around where I am, the former hardware man has graduated. (He knew shit loads of stuff about hardware, stuff that he passed a bit onto me) I really suck at troubleshooting software. I mostly just rely on not modding critical things and keep a strong protection on my PCs, whether it slows it down or not. My mother asks my father first...then me if he has no clue. I am usually the first one to ignore all petty errors and go straight to my monitoring programs. I often spend near-infinite hours either playing, OCing, tweaking, and abusing my gaming rig...which is nothing to brag about, money is hard to come by these days. I also use those near-infinite hours mapping for my favorite Source Mod (easy guess, but for those who have no idea what Source is, it's what this forum was made for), simple modeling, or admin policing a GMod server I am admin of. I know a small amount of Java. I will say, it becomes increasingly harder to upgrade my aging rig., it is what you call a junker, it has parts from older and shitty brand-name PCs, and a few extra parts that I paid with money I managed to scrounge up. My Junker Rig: CPU: Nuclear-Powered Pentium D 3.00GHz (Cheaper isn't always better) Motherboard: Shitty MSI P6N SLI (I will never buy another MSI Motherboard ever again) RAM: Kingston 2Gb 633MHz DDR2 Dual-Channel (I would have had some epic PNY RAM, but MSI boards don't support it!) HDD: 1xSATA 160Gb from a eMachine Leaf blower 1xWD IDE 40Gb from a Hp (The era of WD) GPU: MSI OCed 9600GT 512Mb (G94 based) that I OCed also (Best stock cooling ever made!!) (One of the best things I have ever bought! I will buy GPUs from MSI again!) Damnit...I need a job. It's annoying to have to rely on older hand-me-downs. I NEED a 500GB HDD, my hard drives are suffocating they are so filled up! Though I'm pretty sure that it's my nasty habit of not deleting downloaded files from My Docs, and the fact I just installed Crysis onto Xp, and I need to uninstall it from Vista. Vista REALLY isn't as bad as people said it was, I just need a beefier CPU, most likely a Q6600. WOW...Firefox had a fuck up on the spellchecker...not surprising. I'm sure about 15 of these lines weren't needed. :D
Reminds me of when my friend invited me over his house saying He got a new PC. Needless to say, It was one of these:
How the hell did you get 117 funnies from that?
How the hell did you get 117 funnies from that?
jealous much? Edit:
Facewound is a Source Mod?
Fucking hell no. Facewound is an entirely different game.
Facewound is a Source Mod?
Ok let me rephrase that...the Source mod that this forum is now used for.
The worst is when people are like "Yeah i free'd up like 20 gigs my computer is going to run so fast now!" And then there's all these Apple fanboys I know, and that's just the worst. They're all like, oh yeah, it runs so much better than normal computers and shit.. And I'm just like.. THAT'S CAUSE IT DOESN'T RUN ANYTHING. So yeah, I don't talk to people about computers.
Keep in mind, I don't mean the people who just don't know things, I understand that different people are at different levels, I'm just talking about the people who PARADE around me saying I'm an IDIOT for doing such and such, when I know what my computer is going to be used for and they don't
Facewound is a Source Mod?
I think he meant the forums overall, you know... facepunch. :) If he didn't mean it like that, then :downs:
I think he meant the forums overall, you know... facepunch. :) If he didn't mean it like that, then :downs:
I believe he's trying to say that facepunch was started for faceworld. Although I'm pretty sure Gmod was around when the forum started.
I just built a computer for one of my friends and now I think he managed to disable the 3850 and get it to use onboard only Edit: RAGE! Edit: hint don't get high and try to fix CS settings
A month ago my 80 gb harddrive had 70 gb used. and my 320 gb had 310 gb used. I'm doing media stuff, and that shit takes space. The new comp i'm getting will have 750 gb, and an external 500 gb. :P But that is not the point. Computer illiterate people are the worst if they have it in their mind that they can't possibly be wrong. Edit:
let's go to computer stupidities http://www.rinkworks.com/stupid/
I love this one. :P Customer: "I need a new modem." Tech Support: "What's wrong with your current modem?" Customer: "The Internet light is not on." Tech Support: "Did you reset your modem recently?" Customer: "Yes I did, but what does it have to do with it?" Tech Support: "Well, resetting the modem wipes out your configuration profile, so we just need to reconfigure it." Customer: "Did you not hear me? The modem is broken, and I demand a replacement now!" Tech Support: "The modem is not broken. If you are willing to, we can configure it in about 2 minutes." Customer: "I want a new modem!" Tech Support: "We can't replace modems over a simple reconfiguration issue. All we have to do--" CRASH. Customer: "Now it's broke! Replace the thing already!" Tech Support: "Ok sir, we cannot replace a modem that you destroyed, and your modem is past warranty, so you'll have to buy a new one anyway." Customer: "!*#$(*@#%!@&#$&*(!@#*$!@*^!@#$@" (Click.)
I feel sorry for these people who have computer illiterate teachers, my software design teacher was awesome (he was also head of the school stage crew). He told us about some kid he had in his class once who thought he could hide some music on the network in a place that it couldn't possibly be deleted. Needless to say, it got deleted, along with his homework which was due the next day.... dumbass.
I hate it when you get that one person who you're trying to save their computer from a virus for, eventually running out of luck with scanners and cruising the registry for bad files/entries. So you have to resort to reformatting... Me: "ok this is going to wipe everything out and reinstall Windows completely, are you sure you have everything on cd's and backed up etc..." Them: "Yah, yah it'll be fine, I've got all my music on my other computer and cd's, my pictures are over there and yah, ok yah go for it." *Reformats HDD and reboots* Them: "Where are all my desktop icons/programs?" Usually leads to them getting pissed.
From that computer stupidity site:
I worked with an individual who plugged his power strip back into itself and for the life of him could not understand why his system would not turn on.
Sometimes I feel bad for society. If you can't operate a computer basics like opening word or browsing a site, Get a class or something. My grandfather who is 86 years old can do emails, hosts a website with family pictures and has almost no computer based problems. But then you see store workers that sit in front of their new computer based register and are wondering why it isn't working, but from where you stand you see the cord is unplugged from the back of the screen. Or that the back of the computer is literally spraying dust out because it has never been cleaned or even looked at, until it breaks.

Everything revolves around computers these days... and there's a whole generation in the dark about it just because they weren't born in the digital age. Most of them can barely find a job because of their skill level's inadequacy. Edit: But of course like you said this can be prevented with help from classes, but should this be officially necessary, and required as a society for us to do so? Pardon my ageist comment of saying maybe it all just comes down to ignorance...
Or that the back of the computer is literally spraying dust out because it has never been cleaned or even looked at, until it breaks.
Exactly why every few months I pull my computer apart and clean it... of course the lights around my power/reset buttons don't glow anymore, I think I broke them. I'm not surprised at how many older (40s and onwards) people have problems with computers, but the amount of younger people who can't figure out even the most basic functions of a computer is just strange. I've had 14-17 year old people ask for help because they couldn't find Microsoft Word or Excel or something similar. They didn't know that the start menu had other menus apart from what appears when they click on it, "All Programs" isn't that hard to see is it?
This guy planned on 'hacking' the 'school database' and I asked what he intended on actually doing. Him: Hahaha, I will hack the school's database! *Shows strange hack site found from searching hack tool in google* Me: What are you planning on doing? Him: What do you mean? I am going to hack it! This is him:
I have a friend who constantly claims he owns, in his own words, "THE BEST GRAPHICS CARD YOU CAN BUY". It was funny when he said it two years ago, but now, he still says it. I ask how it's still the best, and he says, again in his own words, "My dads friend Pat installed it". Again, I laugh in my head so much I want to shoot milk out of my nose, even though I haven't been drinking it. Another gem from the same friend, is that he thinks Hard Drive space is RAM. I'll say I have 1GB of RAM, and he blurts out, "I have over 100GB of RAM, your computer sucks", and that makes me laugh, yet also makes me want to slice his mouth off. I finally go to his house, and his computer is as follows: Base PC: 1999 Compaq Presario. Upgraded RAM: Uses SDRAM, he had 64MB, now has 128MB! Graphics Card: Has a Nvidia 6200, Obviously the best one you can buy. HDD: Two 50GB HDDs. This causes a mix of hateful yet funny emotions.
I hate people that get Ghz and GB confused. I can easily live off of 150, maybe less. Who honestly needs 500 GB?
I have 1TB and used ~650GB, it's all at least partially important.
I have 1TB and used ~650GB, it's all at least partially important.
how I had to live on 30GB for a while, I once filled the entire hard drive and windows gave me so much error spam, it was ridiculous :v:
My friends do the "How much memory does yours have?" thing. It pisses me off so much. And when the teachers computers mess up they don't call the IT guy. They call me. The IT guy is probably stupider than my friends about computers.
ironic
Not really. Knowing computer and knowing grammar and two very different things.
