Computer illiterate people who think they know things V5 = I FLICK PSU VOLTAGE SWITCH

To some people like extreme overclockers for a hobby or competition, CPU lapping can mean the world.
It's funny how many computer illiterate quite a few of you people in this thread are, by sanding it he means he lapped it...
Apparently it makes the CPU cooler.
It's easy to fuck up though. And this guy hardly knows anything about computers.
He refuses to believe me when I tell him his 4890 is being bottlenecked by his Pentium 4 :/
Watermark ruins it.
Looked everywhere for one without.

Only the minifigs. bro.

I have a WD Green as my primary drive :saddowns:
Yellow/orange ones keep viruses away too.
I'm tempted to get one of my computer illiterate mates to flick the PSU voltage switch in one of my IT lessons, but it'll end up with either me getting blamed or me getting beaten up. Decisions, decisions :v:
It doesn't explode if you're in North America by the way.
cmon hes only ten
But its even worse becuase my mother tries to teach him how computers work and stuff and he just totally ignores her because he thinks its "Boring"
It doesn't explode if you're in North America by the way.
Not if you rig it with explosives and napalm.
Just kidding.

I have an extra PSU and the shit to make Napalm. I think I'll do that over the summer and make a vid for you guys. Probably put it in an old case or something too.

DO IT AND I WILL BUY THE INTERNET AND GIVE IT TO YOU.:smug:

Uhhmm... as far as I knew, flipping the "kill switch" makes the computer go boom no matter what...
Does it? Someone told me it didn't.
One would assume it's more spectacular in 220V countries, but the switch is definitely on there for a reason.

Not necessarily. What people don't realize is that the power coming out of each socket, one in North America and the other in Europe, is the same. Europe runs on 240V at 3A. This means it provides 740W of power. NA runs on 120V at 6A. This means it provides 740W of power as well. In Europe, the PSU is expecting 240V and 3A. When you flip the switch, it now is expecting 120V and 6A. That means it's receiving more energy than it's ready for. In NA, the PSU is expecting 120V and 6A, when you flip the switch, it's now expecting 240V and 3A. That means it's receiving more amperage than it's ready for. It's hard to explain unless you have a knowledge of electricity.
My power supply doesn't have a switch :D

Also i have a request
My friend thinks that his amd 2.9 ghz athelon quad core is better than my i5 750 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115215
What is the actual advantage of mine over his besides cache
there was this little switch thing on my powersupply and I have no idea what it does, so I flipped it and everything in my computer got brighter

It's glowing from the radiation.
I remember like ~6 years ago I flipped the back switch in my old Dell. The fans started spinning up really REALLY fast so I flipped it back before it did anything.
And that same computer is still working today. guise, i tihnk i suprchrged it

Offtopic, but meh.

Yes, that was the nuclear reactor switch.

Loads of little stories like the ones in this thread

I did get a friend to, He told the teacher He cleaned it because a fuckton of white smoke (probably dust) flew out the back of the psu.

I dont get this, less surface area=more heat transfer? Doesn't add up unless you dont put thermal compound.
I'd take a rough processor face smothered in thermal compound over lapping anyday.

Sounds tasty and sexy at the same time.

This is what your CPU and heatsink look like:

If you make both smooth surfaces, you get better heat transfer.

What about thermal paste? Isn't that what it's for?

the rougher the surface area the less contact it has with the heatsink which means less heat transferred, lapping means more surface area contact, more heat transferred, lower temps
and
smothered in thermal compound
will only lower temps, thermal paste is there to fill the gaps in the rough surface to make contact with the heatsink better, too much paste acts more like an insulator

Thermal Interface Material is thermal paste
What about thermal paste? Isn't that what it's for?
Yes but metal to metal is better for heat transfer.

Sneak into his house, take out his 4890 and replace it with a 4350.
Give me the 4890, I need it more than he does.
He will never notice the difference.
