One of my teachers said that viruses in your computer multiply until the HDD is full, causing the computer to crash. That was a hard class to sit through.

You need free HDD space, and people that go 'clearing hardrive dosent make computer faster' are wrong, because a good cleanup and decent sized pagefile can make all the difference in the world
You need free HDD space, and people that go 'clearing hardrive dosent make computer faster' are wrong, because a good cleanup and decent sized pagefile can make all the difference in the world
Not really. If you have 10% free space and only sequential, non-fragmented files, freeing up space won't bring you anything unless you are using massive amounts of temp storage.
Not really computer illiteracy but here... My uncle used a brand new laptop for a few hours. When I came on, Internet explorer was full of toolbars and shitty addons. WHY? Why the fuck would you even choose to install these. Each one had some lame search engine and some even played music. I removed every single one and installed chrome.
Not sure how many times this has been used:
Im gonna tell you about my school's computers. They are pentium 4's, intergraded nvidia graphics, DVD drives made of plastic and all 35 computers are hooked up to one 160gb HDD. The internet is 6kb/s. Its fucking insane, they expect us to do shit, while the teachers sit there and smug with their i7, HD 4890, 1TB macines.
my CS class last year had i7's and 3670, all hooked up to a 10 TB NAS.
Perfectly acceptable. Faster compiling times means better productivity (especially in a limited time environment like a CS class) and the NAS means you aren't locked to a particular machine :)

My school has a mixture of computers really. They have p4's to i3's. My school is poor though
:bang: [editline]09:39PM[/editline] and you sir are really, really late
It fit even if it is from Dec 2009. [editline]03:03AM[/editline]
My school has a mixture of computers really. They have p4's to i3's. My school is poor though
My school just has Core 2 Duo's. Dell's.

Because he is an obvious idiot to do such things. Really I could have built better machines. The teachers' computers are way too much overkill for simple work related uses. To top that all off, all 35 to one 160GB hard drive imagine the bandwidth allocated to each computer. Even my High School wasn't that stupid.
My dvd drive is made of plastic too?
Hah. Visited school two days ago for changing my schedule, and learned all the computers are now running windows 7. Oh lord. Mind you we have a LOT of pentium 4's :ohdear:. With 512MB of ram :ohdear:
Hah. Visited school two days ago for changing my schedule, and learned all the computers are now running windows 7. Oh lord.
Why does everybody have to think windows 7 is-
Mind you we have a LOT of pentium 4's :ohdear:. With 512MB of ram :ohdear:
oh thank goodness I see what you mean now. Yeah, that's worrying.
How can they run it? I thought it needed at least a gig of ram? Would that even boot?
How can they run it? I thought it needed at least a gig of ram? Would that even boot?
minimum requirements are 512 MB RAM. I wouldn't even fathom running it on anything less than 2 GB though.
Went to school for schedule changes and noticed they have 3V_ACADEMIC, 3V_ADMIN, and 3V_GUEST wireless network. Was impressed.
I dont know if this really fits into the discussion, but I do computer repair and hardware sales kinda freelance, locally. I hate when I go to a client's house and as I'm trying to sell them on something, say a PC I built for them, even though they know absolutely nothing about computers they just ask me mundane shit about it, like "how powerful is the monitor", or "how fast is the hard drive" (Because apparently people assume that the HDD = the CPU), and nod their heads up and down like they're contemplating whether or not I'm giving them the right stuff. Whats worse is when they try and interrogate me like I'm ripping them off. I tried selling a decent gaming rig to someone and I was explaining how it had 3GB DDR3, and the guy started going on the offense like "WHOA WHOA WHOA, my friend says that anything less than 8GB is just a waste of money, and I also heard that the intel processors suck and that alienware is way better, are you sure you know what you're talking about?" Damn them >:c [editline]04:53AM[/editline]
How can they run it? I thought it needed at least a gig of ram? Would that even boot?
512MB of memory is the minimum amount of RAM for WinXP afaik, although I could have sworn that some odd years ago when XP first came out we had a desktop with like 356MB lol :v:
its 128 MB's for the professional version (I capitalized the B so i wouldn't start a shitstorm)
its 128 MB's for the professional version (I capitalized the B so i wouldn't start a shitstorm)
lol, inb4 megabits. Really funny how fast computers have evolved hehe, from 128MB all the way to 6GB :buddy:
I was scanning my friends computer for virus n' stuff software the other day. He bet me 20 bucks it only had one or 2 on it (He had been using the same hd for a few years, no reformats) He lost that bet by at least 200. I hate how people are so unaware of how many viruses n' stuff they have.
You have steam and portal on your school computers without being caught, plus most school computers are shitty DELL's or HP's[in ireland anyway] you probably would've had about 10FPS
Our year get to have netbooks to keep. Normally, people can't put their own programs on it, but people have found workarounds to install apps, so I put Portal on it, and I get around 10-15FPS, which is playable IMO. Also here, everything is IBM or Lenovo.
I was able to run XP Home on a 233 MHz with about 96 MB of RAM. I really hate when people come to me about computers and then they won't listen when I try and tell them anything other than what they want to hear. Like the kid who wanted a laptop to play games on. He wanted to buy a low end Alienware that cost around $900, and it'd cost around $1200 for a system that can handle the games he wants to play. (Assassin's Creed II for example) The last he was looking at was an Asus. Ugly, but had decent hardware. Then he just had to look at BestBuy. I hate them, they mark up their prices and their employees are so annoying. (Besides every large purchase I've made from them has ended up in the toilet. Coincidence?) He was willing to pay near $1000 for it, and I found one new for $600 elsewhere. [editline]05:15AM[/editline]
Our year get to have netbooks to keep. That's one frame for every 10th of a second. You're losing so much information. [editline]01:17AM[/editline]
I was able to run XP Home on a 233 MHz with about 96 MB of RAM. I feel i'm spoiled with my current fps

I'm not trying to bash asus (even though it tends to be a budget brand) and I'm not saying they're all ugly, but this one was bad.
