pretty sad, Linux has gotten to a point where it's so idiot proof that you can put the installation disk in your ass and it will still install and run perfectly on your computer.
unless you got a broadcom wifi card, then you're just fucked.

I had to fuck about with settings to get it to work with my internet when I first installed.
And Rhythmbox didn't know how to play any of my music until I downloaded like, 7 different codecs.
But everything else worked. And now that I have everything set up to my liking, I love it.
Just saying I'm a Mac user that use to be a Windows user. Not all of us are pompous bigots, and I have no problem with any other operating system. :v:
What do you use it for that you couldn't use a windows machine for? Just curious about your reasons not trying to start shit.

For me it was
-The wicked nice trackpad
-The really good design and portability
-Optimized for OS
-Simplicity
I'm not an mac fanboy, i have a huge gaming computer with windows. Macs are good for casual use. Windows is good for nerds, gamers and customizers.

My laptop has a Broadcom wifi card and it worked straight off with Ubuntu 9.10 & 10.04 as well as Fedora 12 & 13

What is your secret? Ubuntu hates my Broadcom card. I can get games working, but I need my wifi!
A lot of this thread makes me want to get osx working on my windows laptop just to mind fuck all the mac users at my school.

Honestly, i don't find it worth it. The good part about Macs is the integration between the hardware and the software. Either one by itself isn't worth it

lol every laptop there is for Windows has everything you listed.

Not trying to start a war but NO windows laptop matches the trackpad on the macbook.
And i don't like windows at all on a laptop, i just think it isn't optimized. One thing mac has over windows for example is when you scroll on windows, it does it scrolls in pieces, but macbook scrolls smoothly and continuously. I in no way think windows is a better or worse os, just not as good as a mac for laptops. Not spec wise, but general use wise. And give me one windows laptop where the software is built around the hardware

You can change the scroll thing, that's a silly reason to like the Macbook over a Windows laptop. And I don't understand what you mean by the software being built around the hardware.

They don't make a different version of OSX for every macbook.
It's called drivers...
Apple makes the ones for macs and other laptop makers like Dell and HP do the same thing, for windows.
There's no fucking magic. They're drivers...

When I was in the market for a laptop, I was looking at quality. I went with Apple. and also I don't often use OSX. My Macbook Pro 17" was cheaper than the comparable Dell Precision Mobile Workstation M6500 with the same exact specs. The Dell M6500 17" also weighed in at 9lbs while the MBP 17" was 6lbs. The Dell had a small trackpad, and a number pad while the MBP had a large track pad, better speakers but no number pad. I went with the apple. I couldn't have bought better specs through any other company, Dell, Alienware or IBM. I did my reasearch and the Apple was the best buy. The other positives of the apple is an absolutely astonishing display, it is almost comparable to my Wacom Cintiq Eizo display. It is also very sleek, portable and has an absolutely wonderful battery. I bought my laptop to work on, not to game. You're not going to find some battery eating SLI setup in any of the workstation laptops anyways.
Because Apple uses only certain components in its ranges, it optimizes OS X to work as smoothly as possible on just that hardware.
It's the reason why Hackintoshes tend to be so laggy and unreliable.
One more thing. The only "hardware specific" thing that has to be in the OS and that is not handled by drivers is the use of the right CPU architecture... Funny thing, AMD and Intel CPUs have the same architectures. The devs at apples are lazy bums for not allowing their OS on other platforms (No 100% apple hardware, without fucking around with the thing.)

Apple doesn't allow their OS on any other platforms because Apple doesn't want to go the way of Windows.
I'm not 100% sure, but I would think that hackintoches are unreliable because of driver issues...
I wish the Dell Studio XPS 16 we have had as good a battery life as my MBP.

This is what i was going to say
I just realized something... I can't really call apple devs lazy bums because they make their OS only work on their hardware. They actually have to put extra restrictions so that people can't put it on any machine.
Since we're on the topic of drivers and "optimizing".
In an OS if you have a good kernel that handles your drivers efficiently the only thing that needs to be optimized are the drivers themselves. If we were to compare Dell laptops and apple laptops in terms of optimization we could see that the only difference is the knowledge of their code monkeys. If we assume that Darwin and the Windows kernel are as efficient to handle drivers, Dell laptops can be as "optimized" as apple laptops...
[editline]07:46PM[/editline]
I would assume that apple as a lower chance at fucking shit up because they make the drivers and the OS.
Now, let's stop the Mac/Windows debate before all hell breaks lose...

extremely damaging prank
at my college i tricked a classmate into playing with the little red swich on the back of the PC power unit while it was turned on, once he flicked that swich and the CPU exploded and a smell of burning plastic and sulfur filled the computer lab the tutor seen him do this and kicked him out of class and i've never seen him again LOL also he was charged for the computer he blowed up!!!

Agreed. I mean its possible, but most of the time it isn't. My old dell inspiron has the shittiest drivers ever.
And just throwing this out there because its sort of related
The reason apps mostly run so well on idevices is because there is a closed hardware market. Once again, its software being written around hardware, thats why some android apps run like shit on certain phones with decent specs. I do like android though.

the CPU didn't explode
Doesn't the psu just blow?
My friends dad doesn't want to install vista to get his stuff into windows 7, the disc came with the computer he narrowmindedly installed xp 32 bit on a dell with 4.5 gb of ram (odd I know) and keeps the resolution down to 1440x900 on a 1680x1050 monitor and when I was giving his son (my good friend) a... newer video card (spare agp 6200gt I found, he has some 3500 TI piece of shit or something) he preceded to put a fucking VACUUM in the machine and his logic to all this stupidity is because 'he worked in a computer shop for a month' so he knows everything there is about computers.

Thread gets derailed every few pages. It was derailed in the early pages of this exact thread.
Also they sound like elitist faggots since they try their hardest to make sure you can't use their OS on any other platform.

Heres a reason, even though if i don't agree with it
Some idiots use a 200$ windows computer and assume that windows suck from that, and every mac has at least decent hardware so they think that macs are way better

I think he's referring the "CPU" as the computer.
