One thing i hate is when kids brag about how they made their own website, and it's a freewebs
Geocities, mang. [sp]I had one a looooong time ago, oh god[/sp]
One guy in my high school IT classes was bragging about having a proboards :v:
They're PRO.
Geocities, mang. [sp]I had one a looooong time ago, oh god[/sp]
Don't worry, it's all over now :)
"why did you waste money on a .co.uk when you could have got a .tk for free" I have also been called a "web-hosting noob" by a kid in the year below on several occasions for using reputable paid hosting companies, instead of some free hosting site that a bored 11 year old made.
Well your dad's got a point. If microsoft wanted, they could scan through hotmail's database for a ton of serials. I have atleast 30'ish on my email alone. :ohdear:
No, that would be illegal on their part.
My mother was having computer troubles the other day. See, she's 50, and is not willing to ask me for assistance because "I wouldn't be of any help". She called Geek Squad or some other we-fix-easy-problems-for-tons-of-cash service instead, and now she's mad at me because I didn't help her. We went to the place to pick up the computer after it was "serviced" and this asshole starts spitting out random shit he has no idea about. I think he said something about her ram being plugged into the fan which is not even possible, but she just ate that shit up. Her problem, if you were wondering, was that her graphics card overheated somehow. It's an old card, I was expecting it to happen someday when I gave her the computer (it's my old one), but not so soon. I tried to talk her into getting a new one because it'd be better for her in the long run, but nope, she didn't listen to me. The computer works fine now, but jesus, the man that gave us our computer back did not have a single goddamn idea what he was talking about.
No, that would be illegal on their part.
That's never stopped the American government before... :ohdear:
[editline]03:21PM[/editline] Good lord, why would anyone want a .tk, they're notorious for being phishing links.
There's also the issue that you don't get any DNS control, it just makes an iframe. I tried to explain this so they suggested I try a .co.nr instead.
That's never stopped the American government before... :ohdear:
US government != Microsoft. And thanks to fearmongering the Patriot Act was passed, so now they can search your e-mail legally.
US government != Microsoft. And thanks to fearmongering the Patriot Act was passed, so now they can search your e-mail legally.
Fearmon-what? Edit: And I have nothing in my email that's anywhere near illegal. :P
My mom was confused about her internet not working, saying there's no access. She said the signal mostly were full, but sometimes dropped to low, only to go back up. (Medion build quality, gotta love it) She was really confused why my sister's computer upstairs' internet works, but hers doesn't. I told her that it's because the signal could easier transfer through the roof than through her many piles of metal, hidden in her radio and amplifier standing in the way of the signal from the router to her PC. So uh, switch to cable or fix the wireless?
If it's a desktop, cable.
Fearmon-what?
"Fear mongering (or scaremongering) is the use of fear to influence the opinions and actions of others towards some specific end." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fearmongering
Not computer illiteracy, but mildly amusing at the time. Me: My PC's cooling is horrible my graphics card is overheating because of this shitty weather :c Friend: Wow, seriously? Me: yeah it's at 80C at the moment, it was around 95C earlier Friend: C ? Me: celcius :v Friend: .... you must be converting wrong That is literally boiling temperature, you'd all be dead. Me: my GPU, not the heat in the room, dummy :U Friend: OOH...
"Fear mongering (or scaremongering) is the use of fear to influence the opinions and actions of others towards some specific end." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fearmongering
pretty much legal terrorism
pretty much legal terrorism
Um, terrorism implies violence. So no, not really.
Um, terrorism implies violence. So no, not really.
Terrorism doesn't imply violence at all.
Terrorism doesn't imply violence at all.
"Terrorism is the systematic use of terror especially as a means of coercion.[1] At present, the International community has been unable to formulate a universally agreed, legally binding, criminal law definition of terrorism.[2][3] Common definitions of terrorism refer only to those violent acts which are intended to create fear (terror), are perpetrated for an ideological goal, and deliberately target or disregard the safety of non-combatants (civilians)." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Terrorism
"Fear mongering (or scaremongering) is the use of fear to influence the opinions and actions of others towards some specific end." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fearmongering
Doesn't count, since I had no intention of influencing others towards any end. I was just pointing out that I'm so paranoid that I'm more afraid of my own government than terrorists... I guess I should've worded it that way the first time.
"Terrorism is the systematic use of terror especially as a means of coercion.[1] At present, the International community has been unable to formulate a universally agreed, legally binding, criminal law definition of terrorism.[2][3] Common definitions of terrorism refer only to those violent acts which are intended to create fear (terror), are perpetrated for an ideological goal, and deliberately target or disregard the safety of non-combatants (civilians)." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Terrorism
terrorism often includes violence, but it's not necessary. I think you missed this part:
Terrorism is the systematic use of terror
at least my parents know a little bit about computers and don't ask completely stupid questions
Terrorism 1. the use of violence and threats to intimidate or coerce, esp. for political purposes. 2. the state of fear and submission produced by terrorism or terrorization. 3. a terroristic method of governing or of resisting a government. http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/Terrorism It has three different meanings. Lets all agree that it was a misunderstanding and get back on topic.
There are two genres of popular terror. Physical terror: murder, torture all that jazz. Psycological terror: what WBC are doing to dead soldiers families. other ways are to play with your mind, tease you viciously about shit out of your power=killing your family while you're imprisoned and whatnot.
My fucking computer teacher. Thank god I'll never have him again, but I have shitloads of stories about him. We use stupid Novell, so he was trying to broadcast a video to every single computer. Needless to say we all saw still frames. He thought it was a problem, so he made us restart every computer. Then, it was slow again. We restarted computers over and over until class was over, him getting madder and madder the whole time. I have better ones, should I post?
of course, as long as they're good
Well, he stepped out of class for a minute, and everyone started playing games on the only working game site, minimizing the Corel Draw window. (Yeah, Corel Draw x4. Needless to say that class wasn't the best.) When he walked back in the room, he freaked out and started telling everyone "Turn the games off! NOW! You'll use up all of your ghz before we finish the project!" I tried to argue with him, but it was about as effective as throwing a match into a volcano.
My dad is even worse. He's never quite been able to get into a digital mindset, and takes analogies of how computers work literally. Such as the email. He's been using a Windows ME for nearly a decade, and I insist it's time to get a new machine (it's got 32M of RAM. 32M!!!) "Okay", he says "But how do I back up the emails?" "Pardon?" "How do I back up emails, in case the computer crashes?" "Well, you could just burn them all to disc, but you don't need to, they're all on a server somewhere." "Yes, but once you download them to the computer and read them, you can't download them again, right?" "Well, you don't need to, they're on your account." "Well then how do I download my account again." I know I'm going to be here for a few hours, so I get comfy. "You just install outlook if it isn't already on the computer, and use you username and password to log in. You can view your emails there." "But I've already downloaded them to the old computer, so how can I possibly download them to the new one?" "Because they're not stored on your computer, they're kept on a server somewhere else in the world. It's not like a letter which can only be sent once; it's more like you get a photocopy of the letter whilst the original is kept at the office." "Oh I see. Hang on, does that mean that anyone can see my emails!?" "No, Dad, only you can, because only you know your password." "Yes, but if they're kept at this server then whoever is working there can view them, surely?" And so it went on.
If he's using the email address supplied by the ISP and not webmail then you're completely wrong. Email clients will delete them from the server after downloading them because ISPs usually give you a limited amount of storage space.
Today, my dad snapped off the disc drive on my desktop with a mug of coffee. He did this in 1998 as well.
