If you're offered a computer for free, you might as well take up the deal.
That's how I got my Intel iMac! I still don't use it at all so its the family PC now, and I have my desktop.

How did you get that free? I saw a 24" Ex-Display iMac, top end and all for sale in John Lewis for £600, best deal I ever saw on a Mac.
If you only use windows on that then what a waste of money, paying twice as much for parts just to install windows on it.
It's a Mac Mini; my dad got it for himself refurbished a few years back. It was just sitting on his desk unused, so I took it. I installed XP on it and use it as a decent, low-power SRCDS and WAMP server.
For what they are designed for (simple tasks/ design tasks), Macs aren't terrible, but I just can never justify the pricing. Though some media software does work much better on them apparently. Mainly due to the developers paying more attention there.
There is some sort of justification for the price. It all depends on who bought the thing.
If a family buys a Mac as a home computer they could actually save some money. Here's my line of taught. Generally speaking a computer will not only cost it's initial price (at least for the average user). In most situation the computer has to be sent to the neighborhood's computer repair guy. Depending on how big the damage is it might cost quite a lot. Generally it can range from $100+. Depending on what kind of people are using the computer this might have to be done more often.
Take the following situation. You have a family of 4, Mom & Dad + 2 kid. Mom & Dad don't do much on the computer and don't damage it too much. The kids are your average retarded teenagers. All they do is chat and fuck around on the internet. They download these retarded little things that allow them to get cool ass smileys and fucked up cursor and what not. These are often filled with malware. Also, the kid (I would assume mostly males) watch a good amount of porn. Since they don't know shit they probably still use IE. the computer is going to quickly get filled with a lot of shit. This means that they'll have to pay $100+ quite often.
If this family would buy a mac instead they won't have to pay the $100+ every once in a while. To this family a mac is generally a good investment.
This is completely different for computer literate people. Your average computer literate person will never need to go to the computer repair guy. Whatever OS they use they will mostly never get shit. If they do they know how to remove it. For computer literate people a Mac is generally a bad investment.
You have to remember that apple is targeting the average user who doesn't care about the specifics of computers. Apple doesn't care about tech savvy people. Their retarded Mac vs PC commercials are complete BS to all computer literate people.
That is a good way of looking at it, due to the way the OS is built it is nigh impossible to break without meaning to. Defending it from the stupidity of the average teenage user or illiterate parent.
The adverts are very annoying though, you are right. The iPad adverts make me want to break something when I see them because of the way they come across as "oh this thing is so useful, but we won't give you any real reasons".

Apple's ad campaign is both a blessing and a curse to computer literates.
Blessing as in if your friend buys a mac he wont annoy you so you might repair it.
He looks and sounds like a MAJOR FUCKING FAGGOT.
I wouldn't normally insult someone directly on FP but I had to. My head was filled with a burning rage of his idiocy.

Hey its ...360 here.
*right click stop download*
All I needed to hear to know a faggot. (nothing to do with the 360 not watching again to get a faggots name.)
You know, when Mac users act like this, this is why most people insult you. Because you react so fucking well.
The majority of Mac owners are illiterate morons who bought it because it was shiny, another large portion are the "Omg i suu crativ ^_________^" idiots who buy one just because "it hs photoshop". The small portion of people who actually have a viable use for a Mac that a Windows/ Linux based PC cannot do? Small. It's the way Apple are idolized, and the way they handle their business that makes a lot of us hate them. Their products are overrated, overpriced, and generally underpowered.
There are so many things wrong with the way Apple does business and the way their products work, but I get along with my life, it doesn't bother me that people buy mac products, I've been through three iPhones now, and I still like using them. But when people defend Apple with all their heart? Please.
you sound like a fucking idiot with that egoshit going on. you're on about how you're better then a select group of people yet here you are throwing more shit than i've seen any mac user here do. I can't imagine what would happen here if one were to respond...
shit man. either one responds in an intelligent manner and you call him a fucking full of himself nerd or they rage like retards and you go "omg mactard hear guyz, let's hund like fucking monkeys chasing a flying turd"
Get off your high horse before i fucking shoot it and stop generalizing them. It's pissing me off that hypocrites are so abundant here. go jump in a lake or cool the fuck off.
ok.. lot of anger here... read the next part for sensibility:
Please stop generalizing everybody, please stop trying to look better and just do what you claim and get on with your life. it's fucking up this thread and my tolerance that you people have a harder time accepting a brand of computers than Alabama had accepting black people. grow up, fast
seriously, what do we need to do to silence you selfproclaimed superior people... a buildoff?
lastly, Apple or Steve Jobs should get the fuck down from their high horses and fix their systems. stay behind the brand and let the actual hardware/software do the selling. i get the feeling that those you people bash often just want to "get new mac every generation" to get closer to Jobs.

My friend says that Linux sucks, so I asked why and he says that everything sucks, and it he also said because it sucks doesn't work well on steam. I tried explaining that Steam is getting ported to linux soon, and that computers aren't all about gaming but he just doesn't listen.
:sigh:
