Computer illiterate people who think they know things V5 = I FLICK PSU VOLTAGE SWITCH

Here's a good one.
I was in a computer shop today, and made quick friends with the 2 guys there, as they were helping me out with my computer. Well, someone had sent in a case similar to mine, and so the tech guy was showing me how he managed his cables in it, since I had no management in my rig.
When I asked him why the computer was in the shop, he said "Look at this." I realized it had 2 470's in SLI with some really nice mobo, aftermarket cooler, 12 GB of ram, and all the works. I said "I don't get what's wrong..."
"The guy said his friend 'built' the computer for him. He didn't use standoffs."
That's right, a computer worth probably over 2k, and the bastard didn't even use standoff, and screwed the motherboard tightly to the case. I laughed for a minute, then I realized just how sad the situation was.
I feel so much pain for the dude who owned the computer.
I wish to kill the man who did that.

It's like seeing a beautiful animal with a bullet in its legs. :(
Also, the guy with my computer was kind of a "gangsta" kind of guy, but still easily likable. I told him about my cpu, and he said "A nigga hurts with no gigahertz." (Yes, he was black.)
I want to punch him in the nuts so he cannot reproduce.
there's a chance nothing fried
"Screwed tightly to the case" implies that all the contacts on the bottom were touching the case.
I could imagine the motherboard feeling like it's sitting on a bed of nails... Electrically charged nails.
I asked my friend how much HDD Space he had, he said "80 tiggabytes"
I've accidentally forgotten standoffs before. I then put them in and shit worked fine. It doesn't automatically fry the motherboard.
My mom insists that XBox Live won't work because the ISP is taking away services because we're switching soon.
Also, anyone else use Qwest? I'm switching to it soon and want to know how good it is for things like gaming.

Won't necessarily fry, but he said it was having constant lockups even after installing standoffs.
Probably doesn't fit with with the thread but... I hate talking to people about their specs and always hearing "Yeah, it was new when I bought it." Well yeah, no shit.

Hahaha, yeah i had a freind who had a PC with a radeon 9800 and bragged how it cost thousands when he bought it
I hate how fast the technology market moves. $200 for a 4870 1GB last year. $400/$500 for a 5870 1GB

and he also think Norton is the best antivirus ever and that the ATi rage is the best card ever
Don't fuck with ATI Rage cards, they are fucking indestructable. I still have one working after all these years in use.
I'm finally selling my Asus EEE 701, How much do you think I should sell it for, Really good condition and everything but it's the original Celeron M version.

It's more worth keeping than selling, just use it as a file server or a media sharing machine, it can still handle simple tasks. If you're going to sell it you're probably not getting more than $50 for it.

I wasn't sure what a standoff was, so I wiki'd it.
Then my jaw dropped. D:

only got 4gb on it, and 3.6gb is taken by xandros, I shit you not. It's useless.
i built my pc like 2+ years ago. what are stand offs? :downs:

No I mean use an external HDD with it, the built-in SSD is just enough to get a modern OS running.
i built my pc like 2+ years ago. what are stand offs? :downs:
I guess you used them without knowing. Or they were already in the case when you bought it.
Oh get off your high horse. You probably had to use Google to find half the stuff you've been talking about out. Capacitors are pretty much, temporary batteries, they store a charge for a very short amount of time normally, but can hold it for a while longer. Tell me how that isn't like a "fast battery"?
I'm saying his explanation is pretty much correct actually, and of course I got my information of google, I wasn't born with it. But thing is no one else bothered and so there was five post on the last page of people going "hurr durr maybe ur computer has special battury or someting or magic" Because they don't know how hibernating works and then another going "maybe duh captitors is storing it all durrr"
No I mean use an external HDD with it, the built-in SSD is just enough to get a modern OS running.
I don't see your logic, If I have an external HDD why not use it on my current PC, Instead of using it over a network which would more than likely slow it down.

It'd be useful if you had multiple PCs that needed access to the same stuff, or you could hook it up to a TV and have it as a media player or something. I used my EEE701 as a wireless router and a 24/7 torrent downloader for a while.
There are ways around passwords on Windows if I remember. I'm sure I used a boot disk to remove a password after my parents locked themselves out of a laptop.
OPHcrack is your friend. It uses rainbow tables to get at any passwords on the offending Windows partition. (As long as it doesn't have any special characters or spaces, in that case your gonna have to fork out some cash for the big tables)(Before you ask, I hear their Vista live disk works with 7)
I have a pass on mine, and there's another account on it, so if I forget it it isn't really a problem, but then again, it is, because it is the same login as on school
Yesterday my brother set a password on only account on his computer. He forgot it and now we have to reinstall windows on his computer and I have to share mine. Sharing isn't fun.
why would you have to share yours? it didn't take too long to install w7 for me :p
maybe an hour or two tops
I hate people who use Safari over Firefox because they don't know what it is. :sigh:
My brother's friend trying to hide using MY computer when my brother has a perfectly good laptop. They use my computer for Warcraft 3 and they bought stuff on my iTunes without knowing. Yesterday I told him why I didn't like it, etc. and he said he wouldn't do it again. He did it again today and tried to hide it. A simple check of the history (Three Days Grace), and the speakers instead of headphones were plugged in. I'm angry that:
A) He doesn't ask.
B) We've had a history with this... Friend. I don't trust anyone who half their games don't work because of scratches. :colbert:
