Computer illiterate people who think they know things V5 = I FLICK PSU VOLTAGE SWITCH
My PC just failed to boot giving a message about the CPU fan not working, I opened it up and found a dried banana chip in the fan. I have no idea how it got in there, it's too big to fit in any of the case vents.
Might have been a sibling.
My brother might not know much about computers, but he's smart enough not to open the side panel and fuck with things.
not illiteracy, but apparently 4GB isn't enough hard drive space for a decent FreeBSD installation. Back to stage 1, but this time with a larger HDD. I know I have a 20 GB one somewhere around here.
Slither how much did you get for it.

what my macbook? $250 and my mom's friend is picking it up this saturday.
As for the sdram i have no clue I just found it
My dad said it was from 1996 :v:
Oh god. I was just playing a game on my desktop which happens to have a particularly loud fan. So, my mom comes in to tell me something that I didn't really care about. She hears the fan which is running at about 50%, definitely not the highest it can go. She starts screaming at me saying that my computer is overheating and that it's going to burn out and all of the parts will melt and that she won't buy me a new one. I told her the fan is for cooling and that it isn't running at it's highest meaning there's no way that'd happen, aside from the fact that the parts melting is highly unlikely. She still insists that my computer is going to break and she tried to walk over and shut it off. This same woman needed me to install Chrome and a few extensions for her twice and to help her when "Facebook's uploader is broken." IIRC, they replaced the java one with some other one and she was unbelievably confused. That's how I got her to use Chrome instead of IE.
Oh and I'm 90% sure my cat is computer-illiterate
Doesn't his expression just say
"OH LOL THATS A HARD DRIVE"

Nah, your cat looks like he was like "My god, does he not even know that that's sdram?"
looked to me like "that's a fine PC133 168-pin SDRAM DIMM. 64 MB, I assume?"
Ill give you $300
[editline]01:45AM[/editline]
for the ram
[editline]01:46AM[/editline]
throw in a MacBook if you want

I pretty much already sold it he just has to come and pick it up
I was joking, I'll get a new one soon anyway
Heh... I remember back when I had a Compaq running Windows 98 on a 4 Gigabyte, (Yes, 4 GB) hard drive... (Lets see, I was about 8 years old at the time.)
The computer was obviously slow. My theory is, the mental bar for computer speed rises any time you actually "use" a faster computer. (Our family had just purchased a Dell running Windows XP. Still have it, too.)
Any how, I thought at the time that if I made a second user on the Windows 98 machine, you could gain access to more hard drive space than what was physically available, thus speeding up the computer.
Nothing really happened, to my disappointment.
:iiam:
in all honesty, my 7 year old laptop with a two month old Gentoo installation doesn't feel a whole lot slower than my (almost) brand new desktop with a 1 month old Arch installation during regular use. I really think it's mostly placebo for your average user.
Can we report people for the APNG exploit? Because Kinki-Bunni is using it and every fucking time I go to the video section I crash because he's somewhere close to the OP.
Yes, he'll get banned for it.
Perma'd if he knows he's exploiting it.
Once I worked as an operator on an old IBM 370/Model 138 mainframe at a local college. My position had been reclassified to fall into a new area outside of the I/S staff. One day, my new supervisor entered the room and stared at the air conditioning unit directly behind me. He studied the two flashing lights for a few moments and asked what job it was currently processing. I killed my career by replying, "Actually, sir, it's cooling the room. The computer is over here."

Submitted from a completely different reader is this reversal of the above anecdote: A Sun server in a tall rack-mount cabinet was installed in an early 19th-century building in the only available place: the corner of a conference room. A distinguished faculty member was ushered into the conference room one day, where he would grade some tests, read some applications, or something of that sort. After a while the server crashed. When the techies went into the conference room, Professor X explained, "It got cold in here, so I turned off the air conditioner."
My mom did that, then I told her "Then don't learn it, afterall you've got me in the house :colbert:" and since she hasn't said it.
It's funny when my mom has trouble with the computer. She'll call me downstairs to help her, then I start fixing it. As I'm doing this, she's yelling "LET ME DO IT I'LL NEVER LEARN UNLESS I DO IT" as I'm telling her how to do it.

Not to be rude guys, but that's plain stupid. "learn by doing" is not just some random saying. if you were smart enough, you'd show her how to do it, ask her to do it and make sure she can repeat the process by herself. That's what REAL IT work is about. one thing is fixing the problem, the other is:
A: preventing it.
B: teaching "mom" to get around it.
Always do your work as if you're not here tomorrow. if you guys moved, died or whatever, she'd be unable to solve it herself.
So, Mom's right on this one guys. it's the best way to learn and it'll save you guys many runs down the stairs.

Then again, the exercise would be beneficial...
some guy at school was looking at Alienware, and I said they are overpriced and you're basically paying for the case. There was one there with the same specs except for the video card, and the price difference was $1000. I have never heard of a video card that was sold for over $1000, and i explained to him that was ridiculous.
As soon as i said it, the retard who thinks that Xbox orange box is the same as PC orange box, even after I said one word: Updates, waltzed over and got right up in my face and said that they have almost no markup whatsoever and are the ultra best thing out there.
[editline]06:30PM[/editline]
And he didn't give me a reason either in both cases of him being an ass

You have never lived in Australia
:frown:
I am in Australia, but he was on the American Site, and he was quoting Australian prices, so I went with American prices, just becasue of the American Site
[editline]07:59PM[/editline]
the worst part was, later on, the kid who wanted the computer said he is only interested in the looks, so I spent a while explaining how when he turns it on and when he uses the disk drives are the only time he is going to look at the computer (He even said that).
I told him that more than likely, he will be putting the case in a spot where the shiny lights on the side aren't going to be visible, and he will spend most of his time looking at the monitor, not fapping all over his case.

It really annoys me when people get cases like that, mine is small, and pretty featureless but it stores all of my parts, and I don't look at it.

My Friend (8:53:51 PM): btw: http://store.apple.com/us/browse/home/shop_mac/family/imac?mco=MTg1ODA3MzY

Me (8:54:31 PM): like
Me (8:54:40 PM): it doesn't suck but it's like
My Friend (8:54:45 PM): ATI Radeon HD 5750 with 1GB
My Friend (8:54:55 PM): i've heard its good
Me (8:54:55 PM): yeah that thing isn't great
Me (8:54:59 PM): it's "good"
Me (8:55:07 PM): it's a mid-high range card
My Friend (8:55:21 PM): it can run sc2 on ultra thats all i care about
Me (8:55:26 PM): dude don't get an imac
Me (8:55:29 PM): for fucking that much
My Friend (8:55:31 PM): i know
Me (8:55:32 PM): $2000 is stupid
Me (8:55:37 PM): $2000 is what I paid for mine
Me (8:55:43 PM): it would've cost like $4000 prebuilt
Me (8:55:48 PM): and that was a year ago
My Friend (8:55:49 PM): your isn't that much better
Me (8:55:52 PM): except it's a year old
My Friend (8:55:58 PM): yea
My Friend (8:56:00 PM): ture
My Friend (8:56:03 PM): *true
Me (8:56:04 PM): my processor is better than the best imac
Me (8:56:11 PM): my video cards are more than twice as good
Me (8:56:13 PM): I'd say 3x
My Friend (8:56:24 PM): but what about the best processor
My Friend (8:56:34 PM): the 2.93 quad core
Me (8:56:41 PM): it says 2.8ghz
My Friend (8:56:43 PM): i7
My Friend (8:56:44 PM): no
Me (8:56:45 PM): oh what
My Friend (8:56:48 PM): click on it
Me (8:57:03 PM): that's a ripoff
My Friend (8:57:09 PM): its 200
Me (8:57:10 PM): no
My Friend (8:57:12 PM): $
Me (8:57:14 PM): no it's not
Me (8:57:19 PM): it's $200 MORE than the i5
My Friend (8:57:28 PM): i kniw
Me (8:57:31 PM): that's not $200
Me (8:57:34 PM): it's like $500
My Friend (8:57:36 PM): I understand how it works
Me (8:57:49 PM): and my processor is about the same as the i5 they offer
Me (8:58:05 PM): wow wtf
Me (8:58:14 PM): they charge $200 for 4gb ddr3 @1333?
Me (8:58:19 PM): ripoff
Me (8:58:20 PM): >:c
My Friend (8:59:15 PM): just wait until the new mac pro comes out
My Friend (8:59:17 PM): with 12 cores
Me (8:59:28 PM): dude it's called hyperthreading
Me (8:59:39 PM): and the mac pro is overpriced
Me (8:59:54 PM): you can get dual xeons with a total of 24 cores
Me (8:59:58 PM): 12 virtual and 12 physical
Me (9:00:05 PM): already
My Friend (9:00:17 PM): yea that is what it says you can do on mac rumors
Me (9:00:23 PM): dude
My Friend (9:00:24 PM): with the computer when it comes out
Me (9:00:29 PM): it's not something you can just do with macs
My Friend (9:00:37 PM): i kow
My Friend (9:00:47 PM): you can do it with all computers
My Friend (9:00:51 PM): thats why
My Friend (9:00:59 PM): quad core is actually better
Me (9:01:02 PM): ...
Me (9:01:06 PM): it's not quad core
Me (9:01:08 PM): first of all
My Friend (9:01:13 PM): stfu
Me (9:01:15 PM): it's hexacore
My Friend (9:01:19 PM): i am saying in a imca
My Friend (9:01:22 PM): imac
Me (9:01:27 PM): with 6 virtual cores along with each cpu
Me (9:01:39 PM): idk what version of the i7 they offer
Me (9:01:41 PM): in the imac
My Friend (9:01:42 PM): let me say something
Me (9:01:48 PM): it looks like it would be a mobile version
My Friend (9:01:54 PM): one sec
My Friend (9:01:57 PM): okay
My Friend (9:01:59 PM): the imca
My Friend (9:02:01 PM): imac
My Friend (9:02:16 PM): highest model
My Friend (9:02:23 PM): with the quad core i5
Me (9:02:29 PM): what about it
My Friend (9:02:33 PM): is actually better than the lowest model
My Friend (9:02:44 PM): even though it has a high ghz
Me (9:02:46 PM): wow
My Friend (9:02:48 PM): *higher
Me (9:02:50 PM): obviously
Me (9:03:06 PM): the i3 isn't a quad first of all
My Friend (9:03:11 PM): those cores can make data travel faster
Me (9:03:13 PM): and lower clock speeds don't mean worse performance
My Friend (9:03:31 PM): what are you clocked at
Me (9:03:41 PM): my processor is at 3 ghz
Me (9:03:45 PM): but it's a previous generation
Me (9:03:47 PM): a core 2 quad
My Friend (9:03:54 PM): oh
Me (9:04:02 PM): I'd say the i5 would be slightly better
Me (9:04:06 PM): if it's not a mobile version
My Friend (9:04:08 PM): so this processor is better than yours
Me (9:04:07 PM): in that imac
My Friend (9:04:10 PM): brb
Me (9:04:10 PM): no
Me (9:04:20 PM): apple doesn't give the specifications of the parts they offer
Me (9:04:35 PM): they just charge you out the ass
Me (9:04:42 PM): and make you research on your own if you want to know the specifics
Me (9:04:45 PM): they rip people off
My Friend (9:06:55 PM): and that is why your going to build me a pc
Me (9:07:01 PM): ok
My Friend (9:07:17 PM): but it needs to be under $600
My Friend (9:07:22 PM): and it needs
Me (9:07:33 PM): under $600 or around $600?
My Friend (9:07:41 PM): around
Me (9:07:46 PM): mmk
Me (9:07:57 PM): fuck
Me (9:07:58 PM): um
Me (9:08:14 PM): can it be $800?
Me (9:08:14 PM): :c
My Friend (9:08:23 PM): no
Me (9:08:26 PM): ffffffff
My Friend (9:08:45 PM): it needs the NVIDIA GeForce GTX-460
My Friend (9:08:53 PM): 1 gb vram
My Friend (9:09:02 PM): but i g2g
Me (9:09:07 PM): dude
Me (9:09:12 PM): a 460 is $240
My Friend (9:09:24 PM): not on newegg
My Friend (9:09:29 PM): i saw 136
Me (9:09:31 PM): wow wtf
My Friend (9:09:33 PM): g2g
Me (9:09:35 PM): that's not possible
Ahaha, look at them emotions.

Kill him
It really annoys me when people get cases like that, mine is small, and pretty featureless but it stores all of my parts, and I don't look at it.
This is all it needs to be.
My case is featureless, and simple, and isn't overdone. I can see now where that how lights on a PC thing came from now.
Let him pay out the ass for a Mac if he wants. Less work for you so he won't whine when he gets viruses for downloading torrents
