This is all it needs to be. My case is featureless, and simple, and isn't overdone. I can see now where that how lights on a PC thing came from now.
Wouldn't you want to at least be concerned about cooling though? It seems like the greatest thing that sets good cases apart from the crap is the material they use, flimsy ones being the crap, so I guess that's another thing to consider, as well.
Not to be rude guys, but that's plain stupid. "learn by doing" is not just some random saying. if you were smart enough, you'd show her how to do it, ask her to do it and make sure she can repeat the process by herself. That's what REAL IT work is about. one thing is fixing the problem, the other is: A: preventing it. B: teaching "mom" to get around it. Always do your work as if you're not here tomorrow. if you guys moved, died or whatever, she'd be unable to solve it herself. So, Mom's right on this one guys. it's the best way to learn and it'll save you guys many runs down the stairs.
Nah, real IT is limiting her account so she can't break shit in the first place and doing any administration she does require remotely over the network.
Nah, real IT is limiting her account so she can't break shit in the first place and doing any administration she does require remotely over the network.
No, that's being a controlling cunt. As i said, Good IT guys teach, bad IT guys just do it and bitch about it.
No, that's being a controlling cunt. As i said, Good IT guys teach, bad IT guys just do it and bitch about it.
No, it's being realistic. Do you honestly thing everyone is able to comprehend all the information necessary to run a secure, well configured computer at all times? No, of course not, otherwise everyone in desktop support would be out of a job. Some people just don't get it no matter how you explain it. And even if you think they do, they'll demonstrate quite readily at some point in the future that they didn't really. Not to mention the dynamic nature of IT, what you may explain today, may be completely useless in a month/year/whenever. So if you want to label me a controlling cunt, go for it. But if you want to get anywhere in IT (i.e. above desktop support level), you'll quickly realise that 99% of users in business environments are limited accounts for a reason.
Yesterday I customized my Mac that's running OS X Tiger to look like it is running OS X Leopard.... I call this system... Liger.

If you don't try teaching them the first few times, you're an arrogant idiot and should get down to earth and think higher of people. if you tried and you're sure this won't go, that's where you either accept running down the stairs 24/7 or come up with clever "kinda" solutions. Small yellow notes and light illustrations did the trick for one alcoholic who had drowned his learning ability. haven't heard about problems from him for well over a year. So, what i meant to say, there's two kinds of IT dudes. the one that is creative and the one who's sloppy for whatever reason. you can't win every battle, but it's pathetic to go in acting like you already lost. Love it.
Aren't all versions of Windows the same?
No it's a bit more technical than that, whereas OS X more-of gets massive updates rather than having to rewrite it completely. And I think he meant by the design.
I want that as my title "HOW MANY GHZ DO YOU HAZ"
I'm making the thread noa
Snow leopard was wayyyy more under-the-hood than past versions of System 10 (Refuse to call it OS X)
No it's a bit more technical than that, whereas OS X more-of gets massive updates rather than having to rewrite it completely. And I think he meant by the design.
Windows never gets rewritten completely, it's 50 million lines of code, so it would take tens of years. Though, the undertakings done on Windows each time might be a bit bigger than with OS X.
Aren't all versions of Windows the same?
Depends on how you look at it.
I was playing Alien Swarm. We had a full lobby. The lobby leader said over his mic, "Hey guys, I have <bunch of old specs I don't remember>, what should I upgrade?" Another guy over mic, "The only upgrade you need is RAM. There's no reason to ever upgrade anything else. I know because I worked for Dell for a while." The 3rd guy laughed until he cried, and since the 3rd guy let us hear his laughs over his mic, that made me laugh as well. Made my day.
Brother goes over to computer, sees screensaver. Starts yelling about how he needs to make it blank or it will "Be glitchin' up his computter." (No, he actually pronounced it "computter.")
Punch him. Don't think about the end result. Just punch him.
No, that's being a controlling cunt. As i said, Good IT guys teach, bad IT guys just do it and bitch about it.
good it guys in a business sense fix it at a horrible price and don't tell them how so they come crawling back later

That explains a lot.
User support is the worst thing ever. You have to deal with people who really don't give a shit and only want you to fix it. They also hate you because you basically bring in computers who steal their jobs. At least in a business. In terms of friends and family it's even worse. If you're the IT support for friends or family you become a bitch. They will care even less because they won't have to pay for the repairs or support. They won't bother to learn anything because they can call you up so you can remind them of stupid shit. If money is involved then it's a different story. It becomes tolerable. People will be more careful because it will cost them money to get the shit fixed. They'll also remember what you said for the same reasons. They might even try Google before giving you a call.

Dude I want an 8GB Processor!!!!111!!11!!!11!11one1!! So I looked at the label on my grandparent's laptop, it actually tells you the size of the hard drive in BYTES. Not really illiteracy but it made me laugh a little.

I have 2 000 000 000 000 Bytes on my Raid0 Drive. Unless I did my math wrong.
I haven't seen any major memory leaking issues with the newer versions of Firefox. High memory usage isn't really even a problem for any web browser though, since it's used for RAM cache.
I've been having major issues with their downloader lately. A few days ago it caused Firefox's memory usage to shoot up over 1,000,000 KBs.
Ok, let me rephrase that so i sound like a dick for a GOOD reason. I've actually produced little guides to most of the stuff my family want to do in pdf form which they can print out and stick by their computer. Sutff like changing font size, emailing people, saving bookmarks etc, it's something I've added to as people have asked for it over the past few years. But in regards to admin access, I won't let them have it unless they agree to my terms, let me explain. In my family, I have over 10 people who look to me for help with their computers. It only takes one person with admin access to install a bunch of shit and then what? I'm 200+ miles from most of them, I don't have the time or the motivation to drive over to their house and fix their machines because of their lack of knowledge. I once had to walk my father through a completely fresh install of windows xp over the phone because he'd hosed his machine to such an extent that it wouldn't even boot. It took most of the day to complete with breaks in between before it got to the point I could do the rest remotely. This is not something I'm ever going to do again, because I don't have the time or desire to do so. If you're honest with yourself, you'd realise that computers are simply too complicated for most folk, which is precisely why a limited account is a more suitable alternative. Before in xp, most applications simply did not work without admin access. Now in vista and 7, this is not the case, 7 is like a dream come true for me. So I have installed a copy of windows 7 and upgraded all of my families machines to run it nicely, in my own time and at my own expense. Now if they want extra software, they have to email me or give me a call and I'll schedule it in for them (usually within a day), this isn't an issue for any of them as they have the majority of the software they require already installed (office, skype, etc). So yeah, you can now call me pathetic if you want to, but I do not have the resources, nor the inclination to support all those people if they had full admin access to their machine. In fact I made it pretty clear to all of them, that if they wanted admin access to do what they liked that was fine, but if they trashed their install, they can fucking wait for the next few months before I get their to fix it. None of them have wanted admin access and since windows 7 was released, I haven't had a problem with any of them.
