Anyone that uses a PS3 controller that can explain how it is to be used?
Plug the controller in using the USB cord. Download http://www.motioninjoy.com/download and install (64bit/32bit specific to get the right one). Once done a restart/logoff is usually necessary so do so, launch the motioninjoy program (usually called Ds3.exe) and you should have something that looks like this: Tick "Xbox 360 Controller Emulator" and hit enable, your controller should now act like a 360 one.
motionjoy got their drivers signed so you don't have to go through the stuff above much less of a hassle, but still, they're on the expensive side as far as controllers go
Ahh, thankyou, I'll remove that part from the "guide" then, I installed these drivers a good year or so ago when they were unsigned. And yes they are on the expensive side as far as gamepads go, I prefer it over the 360 one personally seeing as I grew up with a Ps1/Ps2 and it's practically second nature now. Both great though.

It's cheaper, functionally the same, and supports xinput and directinput so it can be used as a 360 controller as well.
You can do that too if you wanted, most of the time people already have a Ps3/360 so just use the controller to save some money really, it's what I did.
My word that is a hideous interface.
The interface is terrible but it works like a charm.
But wont i have to have the ps3 controller plugged in with the USB cable all the time? Or can you buy a wireless adapter just like with the 360 one?
But wont i have to have the ps3 controller plugged in with the USB cable all the time? Or can you buy a wireless adapter just like with the 360 one?
you can connect wirelessly via bluetooth but I just use a USB cable myself
Well the thing is that it would be somewhat pointless to pay for a more expensive controller that isn't even wireless, I got a 42" tv as a secondary monitor, and was planning on playing games from my sofa. How would one connect via bluetooth? What stuff would i need to buy?

What stuff would i need to buy?
to be honest, I don't recommend buying a PS3 controller to use with a computer, precisely because it is expensive most people I know including myself only use motionjoy because they already have PS3 controllers at hand as for bluetooth pairing they have this guide - I know they say you have to disable driver signature enforcement, but seeing how the tutorial itself is from 2009 they probably got that signed by now as for the bluetooth dongle I'm guessing any of these would work; don't take my word for it though, as I have no experience with them myself.
Best controllers are still the Logitech Dual Actions. They are inexpensive, recenter the joysticks spot on always for the last 3 years I've used them and are really ergonomic. Unless you need analog triggers its great. Totally worth $13.
I think I'm going to go with this one http://www.ebgames.com.au/pc-138625-Powerwave-PC-360-Style-Gamepad-PC

To be honest, a 360 gamepad with a wireless receiver will do the job nicely. It'll cost you around £40 together, but most games have the configuration built in from XInput by Microsoft. And you can just run an input emulator like GlovePIE to script in your own controls and vibration, IN LUA!

Oh OK. It was cheap and i live close to an EB games so yeah. Looks like popular opinion has lead me to choose an Xbox 360 controller
Oh OK. It was cheap and i live close to an EB games so yeah. Looks like popular opinion has lead me to choose an Xbox 360 controller
Just go with the 360 controller, It's build like a tank, Doesn't feel like shit and it's got everything you need in a controller.
What's wrong with just a normal 360 pad, it does the job well and is compatible with most games that come out now-a-days.
What's wrong with the Logitech?
What's wrong with the Logitech? [editline]15th August 2011[/editline] So is the Logitech.
Well imo, I think the 360 one looks better. [t]http://www.logitech.com/assets/32785/4/wireless-gamepad-f710feature-image.png[/t] [t]http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/f/f6/Xbox_360_white_wireless_controller.png[/t] It's smooth and solid.
My word that is a hideous interface.
Yeah, but the newer versions are much less buggy so you only see it for a moment once every few days.

I'm just trying to save the OP money. The Logitech will perform the same, if not better, than the 360 controller for a substantially lower cost.

[editline]15th August 2011[/editline] I personally hate the Playstation-styled thumbsticks.
But in the case of any HID, form is part of function, the Xbox 360 controller is the most comfortable thing that I've ever held for an extended period of time.
He didn't mention it was comfortable, he mentioned that it only looked good.
I personally prefer the ergonomics of the rumblepad over the 360 controller. It's just as solid, survived multiple throws (thanks NFS) and the shape of the 360 controller makes my knuckles hurt after time.
Woah, I apologize. According to Amazon, the wired 360 controller is actually cheaper than the Logitech. For some reason I thought the Logitech was about $10 cheaper. I'd say get the 360 controller then. They're both excellent products, I just wasn't sure the 360 was worth $10 extra.
