that's because of ignorant people, ignoring obvious security and compatibility problems
whoop
linux is awful except for servers, the only thing it has going for it is long term stability
but of course that's completely negated if you're using it as a desktop os, when your changing shit around all the time
you also have this think called "whine" to run windows programs, if you're going to run windows programs why don't you just use windows as your os?
there are no advantages to using linux, other then all the headaches you get trying to install and configure everything while under windows installing and configuring a program takes a couple clicks
Well, here I am posting from this ubuntu bullcrap that broke my Windows XP, whenever i try to start XP i get an error message about chkdsk being gone.
Great fucking work to the asshole who created this mess.
you probably didn't defrag before shrinking your partition
you probably didn't defrag before shrinking your partition
Did I have to defrag is my windows broken
oh fuck all my fucking files

installing and configuring a program in Linux takes one command no exceptions

you don't normally have to but if your disk is fragmented really bad it's a good idea
Well, if linux is so good and optimized and magical, how come Microsoft Windows dominate the PC market?
Can you name even one thing?
Microsoft has long had contracts with all major pre-built computer distributors; therefore most pre-builts have Windows installed. I wouldn't be surprised if installing another operating system violated these contracts.
Due to this, the amount of Windows computers has grown to the current point. That has made Windows the number one platform for developers, which means that most commercial software will be produced for Windows.
People often need this commercial software, so the use Windows.
Hence, Windows is used because Windows is used. It practically almost has a monopoly in the PC OS market.

How do I access my files from ubuntu, I want to save them if possible.

mount your windows drive, they're all in there

So you didn't read a single guide on installing Linux?
Smart move.
[editline]21st November 2010[/editline]
almost?
Technically there's still Mac OS and other commercial *NIces
mount your windows drive, they're all in there
How the diddly doo damn do i do that,
Thats odd, it just installed onto my laptop with no hastle what so ever, Wi-Fi drivers, and sound drivers.
I went from the one minute plus boot times on Vista to roughly 10 seconds. Firefox, Winamp, Skype, Gimp and Cream all work perfectly, and you know what, its all I need.

Well, I thought it would be like installing windows, just pop the CD in and run the installer.
How the diddly doo damn do i do that,
You click on the icon on your desktop.
I can't think of anything easier, really.
installing and configuring a program in Linux takes one command no exceptions
so if i wanted to install a desktop environment i would just have to install one package and it would work 100%
The only icon there is the ubuntu thingy
Well, I thought it would be like installing windows, just pop the CD in and run the installer.
it is...
It partitioned on my computer very easily, obviously you fucked it up.
Well, I thought it would be like installing windows, just pop the CD in and run the installer.
With the difference that the Windows one doesn't give you the option of saving your files, it is.
I'm not sure what sort of magical shit Linux is supposed to do that Windows can't. It's a bloody OS. It has a different (and shittier) sortiment of software and legacy apps from 1978. Heck, so far as I understand a lot of the ways things are done under Linux is inferior and outdated or simply plain dumb. Like the whole package manager dependency hell shit with no application directories or something.
On the other hand I also understand that Windows might well be the most sophisticated OS available to an end user today.
So why on Earth would you want Linux to get "more" from your computer? At least Windows works for you even if you don't want this mystical "more".
I guess Linux by virtue of being open is far more transparent and tinkerable and as such a better learning environment. Or something.
But I don't think the makers of Ubuntu knows what transparent means.
I challenge you to recompile Windows' kernel
Oh wait, you can't!
The only icon there is the ubuntu thingy
The ubuntu 'thingy'?
Oh, right, it might also be in the places menu. Open up nautilus (the file browser) and you should see it on the left.
so if i wanted to install a desktop environment i would just have to install one package and it would work 100%
Yes.

I looked in the places nothing there

Well my HDD looks broken
Yes.
Although you probably also want some apps to go with that desktop environment, this is the truth.
You can install those apps in the same command with most package managers.

You haven't even installed Ubuntu yet? why are you on the install disc?

I would never recommend Linux to somebody who mistakes thinking with things.
Yes.
ok, lets say i do
pacman -S gnome
and reboot, i'll have a fully working desktop environment?
Also I have no idea what's going on with that partition table :v:
You haven't even installed Ubuntu yet? why are you on the install disc?
Because it never asked me to partition when I did the install so i aborted it because i thought it would write over the current windows that I had installed.
