So I'm pretty inexperienced with linux and there's tons of things I wanna be doing with my server but finding good/up to date how to's is a real pain. Is there anyone I can add on steam/skype/msn for quick help?
I'll try not to be too annoying.
The default fonts on Fedora 15 are actually really nice, they remind me of TF2.
I have a problem here.
How the network here functions is you login to the wireless with some generic password everyone knows then you open a browser and load a page then the network re directs you to a login page and you enter your credentials and you get proper access.
So before I could run firefox Ubuntu figured it would update so it got redirected when it asked for a list of packages or whatever it was in html so instead of a list I have the raw html page for the login page this
<HTML><HEAD><TITLE> Web Authentication Redirect</TITLE><META http-equiv="Cache-control" content="no-cache"><META http-equiv="Pragma" content="no-cache"><META http-equiv="Expires" content="-1"><META http-equiv="refresh" content="1; URL=https://1.1.1.1/login.html?redirect=ca.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists/natty/main/i18n/Index"></HEAD></HTML>
Is in a bunch of files in /var/lib/apt/lists with names like ca.archive.ubuntu.com_ubuntu_dists_natty_main_binary-i386_Packages
Should I just delete all of them and they will be re downloaded or am I screwed?

Actually every html file in that directory has that code.
I currently have some servers set up in a cloud like system where I have 1 Interface and Multiple php proccesing slaves. (Working great btw)
Problem is i need to sync the website resources between them and i have yet to find a application that suites my need.
I am looking for a demon that can 2way sync resources, and doesn't crash when i sync with multiple places at the same time.
all the servers that need access to the website content are hosted in the same datacenter so if anyone has other suggestions then a sync app that would be fine too.
Interface runs Ubuntu (I know but i needed a debian based OS for nginx to function the way i want it too) the slaves run Cent OS
The only sensible thing I can thing is dropbox with symlinks.
If the folder isn't bigger than 2GB that is...
That also was my first atempt the console only version doesn't like debian a whole lot, i made a support ticket at dropbox, but i think they only handle support tickets from retarded people asking retarded stuff.
Also i am afraid dropbox isn't very instant or fast. and my servers should always be running (at least the interface should) so i don't need a 3rd party server(dropbox) in between.
I suppose i can set up Samba on the Interface and then symlink it, but that would increase useless trafic betwheen the servers a lot
So I was playing with DWM last night.
I do like how customizable it is, and customization is actually sensible rather than Awesome or Xmonad where you need to know Lua or Haskell to do something simple such as change the color of the top bar.
I'm not sure if I'll stay with it for long (and I don't know what the fuck I was thinking with E17 - I must've been affected by the heat yesterday) and I might just go back to Openbox again. I dunno.
Just found tilda, I'm in love.
His advice was not very good, use screen instead it's much better in this case, seeing as you have to resume your session.
screen
minecraft stuff here
And then you're good, losing connection, etc nothing terrible happens. Now, when you SSH back in to get back to the screen when you SSH again:
screen -r
Just recently learned how to do this, screens a really great tool.
What.
nohup is fine
You just use kill to stop the process which if it's a server program is probably not very often.

Have you tried rsync?
I just removed gdm. My window manager is started directly through startx now. Less RAM usage :D.
Programs are still slow to start though...

We're talking about minecraft.
My shell provider just forbade running minecraft servers. You know why? Because they used up all the RAM available, that's why. In fact, they used up so much memory half of them crashed and couldn't be rebooted due to the lack of RAM.
[editline]22nd July 2011[/editline]
And as if that's not everything, once in a while minecraft will just for no apparent reason start fucking up and throwing NullPointerExceptions, requiring a restart.
Not to even mention the fact you have to update it often which is more to the point.

You can actually set an upper limit on the RAM a Minecraft server uses very easily, so instead of banning a legitimate application they should have warned users, and showed them how to fix what they were doing.

Isn't it like one fucking line in the server config file?

It's a launch option: -Xmx<sizehere>m
I'm needing a bit of help with linux, I've tried a few distros; opensuse, fedora, ubuntu and for some reason the only one that will allow me to select a wireless connection is ubuntu, the others only let me use wired connection or VPN. I'm guessing this is to do with drivers or mabye my live cd isn't burning properly.
That would be the drivers, unless you have a card which requires propertiary firmware (Broadcom ones).

Yeah, the makers of a lot of wireless cards like to be bitches and refuse to open-source them, so a lot of distros are extremely nervous about including them. Ubuntu is much more lenient on copyright, and does include quite a few shady-copyrighted goods.

Alright, I've found the driver for linux, but I've got to compile it and I keep getting errors about there being no "build" folder

We had major problems when launching minecraft with less memory. Some chunks wouldn't load at all and we'd have that bug where blocks you destroy get destroyed ten seconds after the client sees it.
It was tried.

The clients shouldn't even bother without 512-768 RAM really, and 1-2gb burst. I use mine occasionally and minecraft maxed at 512 + other stuff on my server uses 500-700mb of ram, which is using a significant portion of my burst at peak, but it's not laggy and I have no such problems. The server plays really well, surprisingly.
-snip- I'm an idiot

The problem was, I believe, mostly that we were hosting it on a free (albeit very reliable) local shell provider who tries to keep the primary service of hosting a usable remote shell stable at the cost of not being able to run all secondary services you might want to.
And that ours wasn't the only minecraft server on the small host.
-snip once again-

I had to remove all the files with the root account.
What a pain typing sudo rm ca.* archive.* was so hard.

And how long would that have taken on Winodws? :v:
So what do you guys use to view images in a folder on your computer?
I use gThumb. Really nice because it tries to keep one instance of gThumb open at all times, so if I want to view some images from a different fap subfolder, I just open it, and it replaces the previous window.
What the fuck

My laptop uses the BCM4313.
Did it get removed from the kernel or something?

I just use feh. I've already had it installed for the background, so there's no use in grabbing something else.
Looked around a bit, apparently Debian squeeze has a kernel with Broadcom drivers in it.
I'll give it a try today.

you can always compile your own if necessary.
I used to do it in gentoo.
