The preferable approach to start X at boot is to set your default runlevel to 5 and set the default action for that runlevel to start your login manager. That shoud allow you to login graphically and to be able to access your TTYs. Apparently for some odd reason when you start your login manager on runlevel 3 as a daemon you don't have access to your TTYs.

I can access my TTYs in run-level 3. I use ctrl alt F1-F7 to do it.
Have tried to run the LIVEusb version of Ubuntu 11.04 on a shitty netbook
All I can say is :suicide:
It took 20 minutes to boot, and then froze when I have moved my mouse to the Unity icons
[sp] I blame asus [/sp]
[sp] and Unity[/sp]

I've has had similar issues with unity, it doesn't appear to be worth it.
Tried linux mint, didn't start at all
Screw this I'm getting WUBI install to play with linux
Don't do that! Wubi is buggy horrible shit. Try making another live disk, this time at as slow a burn speed as possible and with a data check if you have it.

Wubi? Really? You could just buy yourself and gun and save yourself the pain, or do a proper install. Maybe you did something wrong?
Otherwise I suggest trying Ubuntu. I haven't had any problems with it ever.
But if you're not sure about something in the install you REALLY should refer to the installations guides.
You should use a virtual machine if you just want to try linux. When you feel like commiting you should install properly. (No Wubi or anything silly like that)
How do I install the user theme extension to the tweak tool in Fedora?
Just do a quick search (yum search gnome shell extension) and find the proper package to install.
[editline]14th September 2011[/editline]
Now that I'm on Fedora, gnome-shell-extension-user-theme is the right package. You might also like gnome-shell-extension-theme-selector, gnome-shell-extension-alternative-status-menu, gnome-shell-extension-dock, and a few others.
Are there anyways to create a list of all files on my harddrive?
On windows I would use Disk Explorer Pro and I tried GWhere, a linux alternative but it wouldnt work properly
find /
or put in any directory you want listed.

If you want to do something like find which folders take up the most disk space, I really like ncdu.
[editline]16th September 2011[/editline]
Ugh, I really dislike apt, but I have to use Debian.
Can't install fucking ca-certificates-java which is needed for openjdk-6-jre, because when it does the configure thing it can't create a JVM because java is a turd and "can't find enough memory to allocate", even though I have like 650mb (out of 768) of free memory on this server.

find /
or put in any directory you want listed.
To add to this, you should also pipe it to a file to actually be able to read it. The command would be this, where 'list' is the file the contents will be in.
find / > list
How would I go about formatting a ibook g3 (clamshell!) when all it has installed is the extremely basic Debian (no sudo, just nano and some basic commands).
Also, I can't get onto the root account.

If you can't access root, you're not going to be able to format it. Put in a LiveCD and format it using fdisk or parted.

I installed debian again, but Gnome wouldn't work.
Then, I tried the PPC version of arch. That went well, I got connected to the internet with an ethernet cord (I think?), but I had to use mac's version of fdisk. I thought I did it well, but after mounting the partitions, the /etc/rc.conf was completely blank and spat out a ton of errors every time I exited it (something about mount not found).
I think I'll just try yellowdog if that decides to download.
Well, I just re-installed arch. I used a windows xp utility to re size my windows partition, so that I could create a 100GB /home partition for arch, but I inadvertently destroyed the arch root directory :v:. The second install only took about 15 minutes, as posed to around an hour the first time because I somewhat knew what I was doing. This time I will have a lot more room (I had only a 15GB root partition beside a 100MB /boot on the first install)

Gnome would be too much for it. You'll want to stick to something really lightweight.
There's an Arch Linux install guide for PPC here.

I was actually using that. I just fail at follow exact instructions, or hell knows what.
I know I've asked this before, but which fonts do you need for Wine to not show pixelated retarded versions in GMod/source games? The console is impossible to read =(
So, my step father forced me to install gnome earlier so that we could get my print server to work since nothing we tried with my openbox setup would work. Installed gnome... BOOM LOL IT WERKZ.
What. The. Fuck.
I'm just going to stay with Gnome. Only funtionality I'm missing is the right click menu. Way faster, but oh well.
[editline]18th September 2011[/editline]
And I still can't edit on Linux. Help? Oh, and to reply I have to double click reply and have it take me to the "Advanced Editor".

I'm really happy with xfce, its fast and you have right click functionality. I have no way to troubleshoot you're issue on the forums though; never had a problem like that before...

How did you run Steam on Wine?
If I try to run it here, it just lags a lot and is unusable.

Try using it with PlayOnLinux. It seems to work better with it.
ya, I'm using PlayOnLinux
Is there some list of supported games or something for this PlayOnLinux?
