I'm completely new to linux so I'm a little lost about what im asking. I'm stuck in a college course over the summer and with it being summer school the work gets done pretty quickly leaving me an hour or two to blow off. So my question is if I put something like unbunto on my flash drive and load it up on a school computer, will the linux OS over ride the windows so I can load games, view websites, ect without the filter kicking in or needing administrative access?

Kameshoga, booting from a live ubuntu cd will give you administrator rights to all the files on the computer, but if the websites are blocked from the server in the school: you'll still not be able to play around online. In my computer consent form from my school this isn't illegal, not unless you destroy windows documents.
I was wondering if there is a way to have multiple 'frames' or 'windows' on the linux command line. I'm currently setting up a server as a learning experience and so I'm not installing X. I'm getting frustrated at having to Ctrl+Alt+F# to switch between shells (my keyboard has an extra key to the left of CTRL that I keep hitting accidentally). So is it possible to have a kind of tiling command line so I can see multiple shells without X? Or is there a program to emulate this functionality? (I'm sorry if this isn't worded very well, I'm worn out from working all day)
Terminator Terminal may be what you're looking for
Isn't that the default one for #!?
Terminator Terminal may be what you're looking for
Sorry if I wasn't clear but I'm looking for something that doesn't use X, I want to be able to use it from the shell. Can terminator do this too?
I have this laptop that no one uses because it has a broken display and its DVD drive's been salvaged. So I installed Arch Linux on it. It was surprisingly easy even though I've never even touched an OS other than a Windows. But uh What do I do with this
Sorry if I wasn't clear but I'm looking for something that doesn't use X, I want to be able to use it from the shell. But uh What do I do with this
Well, try installing a DE (desktop environment) like GNOME, KDE, XFCE, or LXDE. Desktop environments include everything needed to easily use a desktop. You could also try a WM (window manager) by itself, like Openbox, Fluxbox, or Awesome (there are many more). Those are just the programs that handle how the windows work, and you build the rest on top of that. After that, it's just a normal laptop. Have fun!

I really like this theme but I have no idea how to download it. Help please.
You clone the git repo, then install that theme. Alternatively google for a direct download?
How does one DD a drive to a NAS? Or transfer lots of files to a network spot? Ive found a old HDD That I can mount on a box, However its a live CD of ubuntu and I would like to get the files onto my laptop (Made by crossover cable)
You clone the git repo, then install that theme. Alternatively google for a direct download?
thanks worked great i just need to add some widgets, get my wireless working, and then i'll pretty much me done with setting up arch
when I do this:
lspci | grep -i net
I get this:
05:00.0 Network controller: Broadcom Corporation Device 4727 (rev 01) 06:00.0 Ethernet controller: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL8101E/RTL8102E PCI Express Fast Ethernet controller (rev 02)
I'm just not sure what to do next to get wireless

"Update: Facebook has since restored access for the KDE applications and plugins, as well as re-adding the missing photos. Apparently the removal was a mistake caused by one of Facebook’s automated systems." Well that explains it... I thought they just hated KDE.
What could be some useful applications for installing a Linux partition on my gaming PC, if any?
What could be some useful applications for installing a Linux partition on my gaming PC, if any?
Well, what do you want to do with it?
I'm asking if there is anything cool or useful I could do with it
I'm asking if there is anything cool or useful I could do with it
Well, there are several routes you can take. Some people like to have one partition of Windows for games and another of Linux for serious business. Other people find playing around with the computer fun, and have that in reverse, playing with Linux and doing serious work on Windows. Either way, it's an interesting opportunity to play around with your computer and learn how it functions. I'm actually better with Linux than I am with Windows because it's just easier to work with Linux -- nothing is hidden from you (unless you want it to be). Now, if you just want Linux for the distraction-free serious business or a simple, easy-to-use environment, you'll want a distro like Linux Mint, Ubuntu, or Fedora. If you want a basic system to learn/play with by essentially building an operating system on top of it, try Arch (or Gentoo if you aren't afraid of compiling software). Either way, the video games catalog will be diminished. While Indie gamers love to use Linux (every piece of (finished) software in the Humble Indie Bundles has a Linux version), I can only think of three professional game studios that make Linux games, Frictional Games, Unigine, and ID Software (but only sometimes with ID; they're weird like that). Fortunately, all three are fucking amazing. EDIT: I just noticed, the last official word of RAGE for Linux was in 2009, and that was that it was not a popular idea, and that if it happened, it would be a port that might come way later because it would be a side project done in spare time by the developers. ID, you will seriously disappoint me if there is no Linux support.
Qualified as in I shouldn't be messing with school computers because I'm not allowed too or because I dont know what im doing.
Both.
Either way I installed it at a computer at home and seemed to go fine but when i go to choose unbuntu it takes me to the GRUB menu and I have no Idea what to type to get past it to log in.
You don't have to type anything at the GRUB menu; it's on a timer that should boot Ubuntu automatically within a few seconds, or you can press Enter if you don't want to wait. If the machine also has Windows installed, you can use the arrow keys to choose to boot that instead.
Qualified as in I shouldn't be messing with school computers because I'm not allowed too or because I dont know what im doing. Either way I installed it at a computer at home and seemed to go fine but when i go to choose unbuntu it takes me to the GRUB menu and I have no Idea what to type to get past it to log in.
As Wyzard said, both reasons are valid. Plus the fact that you don't even know how to spell Ubuntu right. You should start out experimenting with it in a virtual machine like VirtualBox and then come back to installing when you know what you're doing. Installing it isn't that hard, especially not if you can read and follow the precise instructions of manuals or guides, like the one I mentioned and linked to. By starting out in a virtual machine, you'll be able to fuck everything up without ruining your computer. It's very easy to do shit wrong if you're the kind of person that just keeps pressing next without reading anything. [editline]29th June 2011[/editline] Of course, now that it IS installed, the GRUB menu should just boot the Ubuntu installation, unless you pressed something. In which case it should work by just pressing "ENTER" or b (for boot) on the Ubuntu selection. If it says
grub rescue>
Then the installation failed.
Goddamn Youtube. I made a cool video in PiTiVi, and exported it 5 different times before Youtube would accept it. Either the video didn't work, the audio didn't work, or Youtube refused to work with it at ALL. How hard is it to install a new decoder, christ. On that subject, am I the only one who has NEVER used VirtualBox or anything?
i'm trying to unrar a rar file in xfe, I have rar installed, but the file has a password and I never get prompted to enter one
i'm trying to unrar a rar file in xfe, I have rar installed, but the file has a password and I never get prompted to enter one
Try using this command.
unrar x filename.rar
Huh, I don't know if anyone can help me with this problem I have. I have Ubuntu Linux installed, and EVERY SINGLE TIME anyone posts an image from imgur, as such: I don't see it. However, if I manually copy the image URL into the address bar, I see it. Any ideas for what I can do? NOTE: Imgur works PERFECTLY on Windows, which I also have installed.
