• Thinking about building a computer soon, any suggestions on hardware?

I'm probably going to be buying and building a computer over the course of the next few months. Give me some suggestions for good hardware at a good price please.
Give us a budget, or we cannot really help. Save your money up, and read the rules. If you buy it gradually the stuff you have will be outdated by the time your finished. Edit: Wanted to quote the rules. Don't make a thread for a build you plan to purchase in half a year.
Around $500 being the budget, could you calculate me a build from that amount of money? I'm new to this hole computer building thing, all I know is how to put it together. None of the specs.
Around $500 being the budget
Is that starting from scratch? No hard drive, monitor, os For example.
Just the computer. I have disk drives and the hard drive already.
Do you have anything to work with, OS's Monitos speakers hard drive ect? Do you need keyboard and mouse ect? [editline]29th December 2011[/editline] Tell us EXACTLY what you have to reuse.

I would suggest a value system or the likes But if you really want to build it go amd.

What about an APU?
What about an APU?
I really doubt he would want an APU haha, that's terrible

What's an APU?
Gigabit is reliable enough too me, but if you wait a month the prices of the 6XXX will crash and he could get a good card. An apu is a CPU and GFX Card together
What's an APU?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Accelerated_processing_unit But I wouldn't go that route, stick with a dedicated GPU unless you're not planning to do 'hard core' gaming

Might take a while before I get everything. What games could I run with this build? I'm planning on getting the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. pack.

I think you could get a 6870 if your not getting it for a while.
Is there any cheaper build that will still play games well? 500$ is fine but I wanted to know if I could get almost the same thing cheaper.
ASUS M5A78L-M LX AM3+ AMD 760G Micro ATX AMD Motherboard ~$60 [Mobo] AMD Phenom II X4 960T Zosma 3.0GHz Socket AM3 95W Quad-Core Desktop Processor ~$110 It's worse then intel but go for that if you want budget, but if you're running on such a small display you should probably just go with AMD, they're more budgety
Okay, I replaced the motherboard and processor on my list to those. Any bad things about them that I should know about?
Okay, I replaced the motherboard and processor on my list to those. Any bad things about them that I should know about?
Well for what you're doing it shall suit you well, most games aren't very CPU dependent anyways, well for now. There's not a huge difference between the i3-2100 but it's more reliable, but the 960t can have 2 more cores unlocked, possibly. As for the motherboard, it seems okay. You wanted cheaper and that board is a pretty good deal but you won't have as many features
What kind of features would I be missing out on?
If you go with am3 then you're killing off all means of future upgrading. I'd much rather go for a solid z68/p67 motherboard with the i3 2100, and swap out that i3 with an i5 2500k once you have 200 bucks to blow. Do note that within games, the i3 2100 performs just as well as a phenom 980
Yeah by going AM3 you're more likely to have to do a big update in the future.
I switched back to the original build because the budget went back up.
