All current LGA 1155 motherboards will work. But new ones with the new chipsets will have native features like USB3, PCI-E 3.0 and possibly thunderbolt, but I'm not completely sure about thunderbolt inclusion. It's not worth purchasing any Sandy Bridge CPUs or motherboards right now because Ivy Bridge is really close. The only situation I can think of is if your PC dies or you have a really bad cpu on its last legs like a Pentium 4 or something.
2 months is a long time to wait for a 10% performance increase
2 months is a long time to wait for a 10% performance increase
Future proofing and dickwaving to other nerds. It's also a small money difference.
2 months is a long time to wait for a 10% performance increase
Actually Intel is targeting a 20% increase in performance. Along with that comes reductions in power usage and temperature, and from what I understand the move to 22nm may increase overclocking potential over Sandy Bridge. I just don't think there's any reason to get a Sandy Bridge upgrade right now unless your PC is borderline unusable or dead. I'm on an E7500 and despite being slow and outdated, I wouldn't buy a chip that will be replaced entirely in 2 months time(I learned that the hard way when the i3 chips came out only a few months after I got my C2D). Obviously not everyone shares my belief, as shown by you recently buying a 2500K, but in my opinion it's not worth it outside of a couple of special situations.
E7500 bros [editline]7th February 2012[/editline] they overclock like mad they do I got mine to 3.7GHZ easily.

It's not even completely stable now. I've never had it crash during use but it won't survive prime95. I'm retiring it in a couple months anyways so it's no issue.

Best $40 processor upgrade I have had, went from an E6550 which couldn't overclock more then 200mhz, it was 2.33Ghz base. It was stable to 4.2Ghz at that voltage but ran too hot, 50C idle, at 4.0Ghz it idles at 38C. Ended up selling my motherboard, cpu, ram, and cpu cooler to a friend for pretty cheap. E5300, EP45-UD3P, 4GB DDR2-800, and a Scythe Kama cross for $200. His Phenom II system killed itself a few days before and he gave me some time on a 3D printer. They are awesome.
I still don't regret getting the i5 2500k for $150 on blackfriday. The difference between the E5300@4.0Ghz and an i5 2500k@4.4Ghz is so amazing. The IGP performance increases don't mean much to me, but the 3d transitors are interesting. I look forward to all the benchmarks comparing them, I doubt the price to performance will beat a $150 i5 2500k. Microcenter is still selling 2500k's for $180.
You got it for 150$!? YOU LUCKY BASTARD! It was worth every cent of my 250-300$... I don't think I'll need to upgrade anytime soon, it can run Crysis...

fuuuck i just got the 2500k for christmas
I just realized that there's March between February and April. Suddenly the 1 month wait turns to 2 months, FML...
That SAME exact realization happened to me as well about two weeks ago. I was like "ONLY TWO MORE MONTHS!!" and then it hit me. [editline]9th February 2012[/editline]
Going to attempt to put aside ~£400 for a 3770K and appropriate motherboard, does that sound like a reasonable budget or do I need to raid my savings even more My calendar is ready, my wallet is not
I'm considering spending about $600 dollars as well.
I was putting my rig back together after a cleaning and it took me 20 minutes getting the ram in the right spot so that it would boot instead just beeping at me. April can not come fast enough.
fuuuck i just got the 2500k for christmas
Buy Ivy and send me the 2500k <3 But I definitely plan on a system upgrade once the Ivy comes out, i'm due
The 2500k is amazing, I don't know why you'e complaining, it obliterates everything you could possibly throw at it. It's basically the 8800 of the CPU market, it's very good hardware that's going to last a long time.
Because the 3570K might be worth the wait?
He just upgraded, it seems kind of pointless to upgrade again less than 5 months later for something that's probably at best going to give a minor increase in performance. I mean if he's a graphical artist, renders videos regularly, or any other heavy duty work I'd understand, but for anything else (IE gaming) it's such a pointless upgrade, he might as well just wait for Haswell.
I didn't say upgrade again, I think he meant he should've just not gotten a 2500k and waited for the Ivys. Again because it might've been worth it (to wait and upgrade once, to an ivy), but that's kind of up to each and every person isn't it
I'm tempted to start saving for one. Still got a Q6600 which I love and haven't had issues with, but I guess it's kinda getting old now. Might put it in a spare/server PC. I haven't bought hardware in ages, so I don't know what the pin situation is or whether I need a new motherboard (I know for a fact I need a new one, coz I got water in this one a while back and it occasionally causes graphics issues (which aren't coz of the graphics card) and I think it's the reason my last graphics card died).
You'll need a new one from a Q6600, yes.
Looks like I'll finally upgrade my Q9550 this summer. It's still fucking awesome, but I want more RAM and buying DDR2 RAM is stupid.
Can't wait for people to start saying 'wait for haswell' around june.
They haswell intentions :v:
Can't wait for people to start saying 'wait for haswell' around june.
I seriously hope they don't. I usually tell people to wait around the 2 month mark. But Haswell is H1 2013 which will be around a year from now.
Chip giant's highly anticipated Ivy Bridge processor--the engine of future ultrabooks--will be delayed, according to a report. The next-generation Intel chip destined to populate the upcoming crop of ultrabooks is delayed, an Asia-based report claims. The delay of the "Ivy Bridge" processor is being reported by DigiTimes, a publication that typically voices the concerns of device makers. Those concerns are just as often opinion as they are fact. That said, the key point is that volume shipments of Ivy Bridge won't happen until "after June," Digitimes said, citing sources at "first-tier notebook vendors [that] are having trouble digesting their Sandy Bridge notebook inventories due to the weak global economy." A "small volume" of Ivy Bridge processors will ship on schedule in April, the publication added. The report also mentions that the PC replacement cycle won't begin in earnest until September "when Microsoft launches Windows 8." Ominously, DigiTimes says the first three quarters of this year--before Windows 8 is released--will be a "dark period" for the notebook industry. But before we go any further, let's revisit what Intel said during its earnings conference call on January 19. Here's a comment from CEO Paul Otellini: "We'll launch Ivy Bridge, our first 22-nanometer product, in early spring. Ivy Bridge will improve on the graphics performance of Sandy Bridge by more than 70 percent. The industry will bring more than 70 new Ultrabook designs to market this year. And when Windows 8 launches, we'll be ready with both PCs and tablets." Later in the call, Chief Financial Officer Stacy Smith said this: "We have a very fast ramp of Ivy Bridge, strong demand." What is a fast ramp? Smith never explained so it's not clear if this would contradict what DigiTimes is claiming. It's also worth noting that peak production of new Intel chips typically doesn't to happen until a few months after the official technology announcement. Intel declined to comment. So does this mean we'll have to wait until June until it's released for Builders too or will we still be able to get it in April?
Oh well, more time to save money.
So does this mean we'll have to wait until June until it's released for Builders too or will we still be able to get it in April?
I want to know this too
It's speculation. Wait and see.
Seems like, according to that, it's just notebooks / prebuilts that will be delayed because they want to sell their sandy bridge inventory at a higher price first
Except more reputable sources have claimed that 20-30% price cuts are expected in older sandy bridge stock to get ready for ivy bridge's release. There's speculation on both sides - there's not really much point in doing anything but waiting and seeing who turns out to be right.
Probably best to wait for official word, it's all rumors for now.
