Except more reputable sources have claimed that 20-30% price cuts are expected in older sandy bridge stock to get ready for ivy bridge's release.
There's speculation on both sides - there's not really much point in doing anything but waiting and seeing who turns out to be right.
right but what about the notebooks they've already made (and thus cost more because they were built using old prices). They want to sell those and make money on them before shipping cheaper sandy / new ivy bridge stuff
Chances are that the price they pay for the hardware, plus labor, packaging and shipping, is still much lower than what they charge. They have price wiggle room when they buy in mass bulk
Latest news regarding the speculation that Ivy Bridge would be delayed until June.
Reports that Intel was notifying partners about plans to postpone mass shipments of Ivy Bridge processors turned out to be only partially true, according to VR-Zone. The new report claims that desktop processors are still on schedule and “only the dual-core [mobile] models have been pushed back.”
That's fine, I won't be buying a laptop for a while anyway.
Still on the fence about getting the 3770K

upgrade from a Q8200 to an ivy of some sort worth it?

I'd say so. The Core 2 series is really starting to show their age, I'm on an E7500 and obviously your C2Q will be faster, but the entire range has become fairly outdated.
I don't see the point in spending yet another $250 or whatever just for a 20% increase in performance
although 20% will probably be faster than it sounds

20% is a significant change. But if you're already upgrading go with Ivy. I think that's the general consensus of people here.

This. There's no point in upgrading if you're still using a current generation processor. I'm using an e6850 and 4GB of RAM and I'm in desperate need of an upgrade since it's severely limiting everything I do. Only main reason I'm holding out for Ivy Bridge is due to Kepler.
avy is still 16 lanes right?
i'll just wait till I kill this 2500k
by then, ivy bridge will be old

Haswell will most likely be more up your ally if you need that kind of large jump in processing power.
So does this mean we'll have to wait until June until it's released for Builders too or will we still be able to get it in April?
Not sure if already mentioned, but mostly only low voltage / mobile chips will be delayed. Desktop / Xeons are still scheduled to come out in sometime april. The thing I'm most looking forward is sandybridge-e Xeon processors.
avy is still 16 lanes right?
I'm pretty sure it's still 16 lanes, but it has support for PCI-E. 3.0, so the added bandwidth ( given that you have PCIE 3 compatible devices mitigates the downsides of only having 8x8 for CF/SLI) There might be an additional link from the CPU to PCH rumors says.

Says Ivy is 20 lanes.
I've decided to wait for Ivy Bridge before upgrading. I'm so excited, I'll be going from a 2.5Ghz Intel E5200 (42NM) processor to this new tech. I can't wait to see the speed and performance increase from all my new components.
Current Build:
Intel E5200 2.5Ghz
4Gh Corsair DDR2
GTX 460SE 1GB
Gigabyte UP3DL (Or something along that)
New Build:
i5 3750K
8GB G.Skill Ripjaws DDR3 1800
GTX 460SE 1GB
ASrock Gen 3 Z68 Motherboard
And a possible 60GB SSD

Why not get a newer graphics card with that? The 460SE isn't really all that good.

Try going from a E8400+8800GT to a Ivy Bridge+Kepler.
My pants become wet at the thought of it...

You wont want to be getting a Z68 mobo. You'll wont get features like native USB 3.0.
Have companies released new mobo prices? I wanna see the equivalent to the extreme 3 gen 3
Have companies released new mobo prices? I wanna see the equivalent to the extreme 3 gen 3
Not yet. They'll probably just be direct replacements that range from $5-10 more at launch, because that's basically the pricing scheme for the CPUs themselves.

Recommendations then?
Why not get a newer graphics card with that? The 460SE isn't really all that good.
I only have a limited amount of money to upgrade with, and since my video card is the most recent thing I've bought I can just wait a little while and save before I buy a newer card. It surprisingly is quite good at what it does; I've overclocked it to 850Mhz and it runs most of my games on max settings at 1920x1080. The only game that has trouble is BF3 and that's because my CPU is so limiting.
Recommendations then?
Nothing at the moment. There have been no panther point mobos announced. Though I'm thinking of a product that will likely be announced and will be called something along the lines of the ASRock Z77 Extreme 3 Gen3.

Hmm, I wonder what the price will be. I really don't want to spend more than $150 on a new main board; even though I do know that more expensive boards offer the more advanced overclocking abilities, I'd prefer something that can get the job done without breaking the bank.

It'll likely be around the same price as the current ones.

Try going from having no desktop at all to Ivy Bridge+Keplar
That's what I'm doing, can't wait
