https://i.imgur.com/h84aKa9.png I also have the docking station for this.
Can't you replace it with the classic keyboard?
Get this. I like the chiclet one better. I've tried both and imo, the keyfeel is precisely the same and the chiclets reduce typing errors because they have a much larger "deadzone" between keys. I get why people like the seventh row but I'm not too into it myself. If I found a classic keyboard for real cheap I might try it out.

Since it didn't make sense to send the laptop away to be scrapped, I took it and purchased a few spare parts to fix it into working condition. It's served me well enough and refused to die despite the beatings it's taken; most recently I fell on my back while carrying my laptop in my back bag: it unearthed a bunch of dead skin from underneath the keyboard and caused a tiny dead spot in the screen, but other than that it took the hit A-okay. The LCD screen was a 50€ third-party unit that was starting to have image retention issues, so at least I have another reason to replace it now.
The touchpad sticker on my T430 came off so now I can browse memes without even having to look up. https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/110583/370e8692-2a78-4c16-a1bf-742c8a5ede00/touchpad_.jpg I don't like the dotted surface of the original sticker so imma see if I can replace it with some 3M matte vinyl...
Almost got a t420 off ebay. Stopped bidding after 120 dollars. It had a i7, an IPS panel, and a NVIDIA NVS 4200M. Was in really good condition actually and sold for about 210ish. Almost wish I went all in at the last minute but I don't exactly want to spend 150+. I'm having a hard time deciding between what model I want. T420 seems like a solid choice, but x220 or 201 is something I also want. Would it be a mistake to go for the tablet models?
I hear horror stories about Nvidia GPUs in T420's spontaneously dying.
Hey guys so yeah I just picked up a T420 it's pretty good I'm hoping to be using it for a long ti- fuck Honestly though the NVS 4200M in this thing isn't that much better than the Intel HD 3000 that's built into the CPU so having to run with that if the dedicated chip dies wouldn't be the end of the world. It is nice having the extra VRAM though, even if it can't run dick at a decent framerate. And the laptop + 2 authetic chargers + the dock + a real Lenovo 9-cell for $159 was something I couldn't pass up. This thing has more ports than New York City lol, it's great https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/145043/2dc1c1d5-7b49-4333-a928-a12374835604/IMG_8053.JPG https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/145043/110987d6-7365-4a97-8103-d2ab4d0a4a16/IMG_8052.JPG
I'd chalk the 4200Ms dying because of the fact that they run at ~70c average and a lot hotter in games, at least mine does even with new paste and a clean out
my room mate does not like lenuvo think pads and his reason is lenuve make "fragile" shell compared to ibm think pads
He's wrong. The fact of the matter is that ThinkPads now are just as durable as they've always been. They aren't as chunky, so they don't feel as durable, but they are. People shit on Lenovo for driving the ThinkPad brand into the ground but most corporations would have fucked with the design concept a lot more in order to appeal to the mass market. Lenovo has been content to keep them at least somewhat niche, and they're still quite well-built.
What games do you run on yours? I know this thing was meant to run CAD and not much else but if there's something I can do to fuck with the drivers in order to get more out of it that would be swell.
Running source games (GMod, HL2) or Minecraft is enough to get it hitting 80-85c. Playing heavier games like the TY the Tasmanian Tiger 1 remaster can push it up to 90c and make it start throttling like mad. It's here that it runs worse than the intel hd graphics.
I've noticed that adjusting this vvv https://i.imgur.com/ADRrBQz.png in Power Manager can at least take some pressure off of the heat sink and help keep everything cooler overall. You'll lose a full 1.0ghz off your CPU clock speeds but if you can't run anything without buzzing the TJ max temps it would be worth it.
Got a x201 for 50 dollars. No charger no HDD. Did I do good?
Do you have a charger and storage?
Lenovo Thinkpad x201 i5
Neat! Welcome to the club, broseph. Looks like the battery is probably shot though, according to the angry glowing orange LED indicator in those pictures. If you don't already have a drive for it, consider this: https://www.amazon.com/Samsung-250GB-Internal-MZ-76E250B-AM/dp/B07864WMK8/ref=sr_1_3?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1523078866&sr=1-3&keywords=250gb+ssd Should be more than enough for your purposes. Also, an official Lenovo 20V barrel charger is ~$15 at my local computer shop, but your ecosystem may vary. The larger laptops you've seen in this thread work best with the 90 watt brick, but I think the 65 watt charger will do you just fine, although they are inter-compatible.
https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/634/c8bcb306-621a-4918-af8b-6998250d9a6f/image.png Well this happened after a repaste on the GPU and CPU. I think either I fucked up putting it back together, or something isn't right with the way the CPU heatsink is seated. It spikes up to the 70s sitting on the desktop, and running it through stress tests throw it well over 90c. Oddly the dGPU appears to be fine now after a repaste (maxes out at 75c on the newest game it'll run at acceptable framerates).
It has less bezel than my non-thinkpad, it's not even that thicc.
People joke about the physical backlight brightness slider but I'd appreciate having one. I can't quite establish muscle memory for Fn+F7 and F8
Behold, Schrodinger's Ultrabay. https://i.imgur.com/YDjj3tR.png A DVD drive that is both powered on and off simultaneously.
Matte touchpad on my T430 all done, feels pretty nice, definitely better than that bumpy shit. https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/110583/d6b8b62a-8d37-440e-88c1-a86e26462a95/touchpadMod.jpg
https://i.imgur.com/ixwXF38.png Those red spikes are YouTube trying to buffer 1080p/60fps video, over wifi, during playback. Anything above ~10k microseconds results in a nice distracting audio stutter/crackle. This problem does not occur over ethernet with the wifi turned off, therefor I have come to the conclusion that the NIC that comes with the T420 is a massive pile of shit, unless anyone here has a magic solution. From what I've read, Lenovo has a whitelist built into their mobos that prevents the addition of certain wifi cards. With that in mind, does anyone have a good replacement?
I just ordered a new fan to replace the one that died last night. It looks like I'll have to disassemble pretty much all of it to change it??
I mean, it depends on your model but in general it's not too big a deal to get down to your CPU. Just follow a tutorial and keep your screws handy/organized. Also thermal paste
Y if you're not against it, you can flash the bios to remove the whitelist which would allow you to use any card.
You can unlock the BIOS and install pretty much whatever wireless card you want. Alternative is USB wifi tho, Lord knows Thinkpads have enough ports for you to plug one in and forget about it.
USB wifi has a habit of coming with its own set of problems but it's not a terrible idea in these circumstances.
One thing I really like about USB wifi adapters is some of them have an antenna port on the back which allows you to affix ridiculously large 9dbi antennas to them Since I've moved on from my X220 to my MBP, I should mod my X220 to use an external antenna connected to the internal wireless card.
