And I've already spent so much time looking for Thinkpads that I'm still looking out for a good deal on a t420 lol. I'm going to get the best deal on an SSD that is possible however it's come to my attention that I'll be needing some sort of insert as I doubt it'll be provided. They're called rails I think.
I still don't really understand why people like the T420 over the T430, the T430 gets you better CPU compatibility and some better stock displays, and keyboards are ezpz to swap if you're into that kind of thing
Because weed.
but 430 is 10 more weeds than 420?? that's 10 better

Man, Lenovo is super annoying about batteries. The 6-cell on my x230 is down to 7% health and my only real options are taking a chance on chinese 44+ batteries or buying a new one for pretty much the price I paid for the entire laptop. I'd give re-celling a try but apparently it's very tough to do it without the controller locking up, nobody seems to have put out a thorough guide.
A laptop battery that was just a shell you could open and replace the cells of as easily as those modular USB chargers would be killer.
Just go with the chinese mystery cells, honestly. Any descrepan y in capacity can be resolved as a refund or dispute with eBay.
I've had good experiences with buying Lenovo batteries, specifically 70++ batteries, on Amazon. Xfce's power manager lets you check the manufacturer of cells so that's a quick way to check if you've gotten something legit.

Why aren't there any companies in america/europe who make decent batteries for various electronics? You'd think there would be a market for it considering everyone believes chinese knock off batteries are untrustworthy.
Korea and Japan have the market cornered.
Chinese knockoffs are untrustworthy because they're knockoffs, not because they're Chinese. Any name-brand battery is still assembled in China, but it's done under a higher standard of quality, using better (japanese or korean manufactured, name-brands like Samsung and LG) 18650 cells. On the other hand the knockoffs can have anything from poor-quality cells to rebadges of binned cells and even re-used cells shucked from other devices, wired to a controller that can't do anything but guess the way the original controller works, with cheaper plastic and dodgier QC to boot.
You just can't beat the scale of a Chinese factory and paying ex-farmers pennies that still keep them happy enough to take the job.
So whats the common opinion on the Kaby Lake R T480s that recently launched? Reddit reckons they're not too bad, battery life looks pretty good from several reviews I read. I'm looking at one that has the 1080p screen but with the 4G, which lenovos website doesn't seem to list as an option.
A better way to state my question is this: There are plenty of users of older devices who need new batteries. Manufacturers of those devices no longer make new batteries. There are three options: Buy an original unused battery (if you can find one, depending on the device. eventually there will be no more left), buy a knockoff that has a high chance of failure, or make your own if you miraculously have the tools to weld them. Why is nobody filling the gap? A trusted third party who can make decent, even good batteries.
With all that said I'm still waiting on my x201. Can't wait to feel this keyboard everyone talks about.
Because nerds like us using old ThinkPads are so small of a market, we're not worth catering to, at ALL. Economies of scale come into play here. You need an assembly line, a suitable battery chemistry, plastics molding, a semiconductor supplier... Costs per unit go down as the number of units produced goes up, and the number of units we'd consume is just not worth it to any manufacturer.
That said, Lenovo is still selling brand-new batteries for, at the very latest, the Tx20 series. I'm sure there are enough business out there still using them that it's worth their while to keep buying cells from LG Chem.

Just got this a couple weeks ago. Needs a 64bit CPU though.
To be fair, a team of insane enthusiasts operating from electronics capital of the world Shenzhen did put out an i5 x61 kit.
This guy is actually insane.

Guess mobile embeds aren't quite there yet.

I replaced it a few days ago and it's running fine again.
I'm running an x220T and everything's in order but there's a part I don't know if I can actually buy. The screen is starting to become really scuffed up and it's starting to bother me, can I just buy the outer layer instead of buying a new IPS panel and the works? I don't know if that makes any sense, I'm not looking for a screen protector, just the clear piece in front of the screen.
Very, very unlikely. The screen counts as one part and the individual components of which are almost never sold separately.
Nope, the screen and digitizer are bonded. If you do get another screen, Photodon protectors come well-recommended. The way it bonds might help hide some of the scratches on your current panel, too.
I’ve been looking at buying a new 8th gen Thinkpad, upgradable RAM and SSDs are big.
Which ones have 2 batteries? I remember the T430 had that.
Does anyone here actually own one of the older thinkpad tablets?
Hey do you guys know where I can get just the trackpoint module? Not looking for the keyboard, just the trackpoint by itself.
Is it pretty common for ebay sellers to ship at the last second? I bought my x201 and the last day for expected delivery is this monday. Not feeling too great about e-bay considering a charger I bought had a lot of wiring exposed from the plastic but luckily they refunded me.
Occasionally they either can't or forget to ship because of IRL shit happening, but generally they're usually onto it quick. Send the seller a quick message after the last date asking where it is if it hasn't shipped.
Will be doing this in a few hours. I'm going to be pretty disappointed if I don't get a reply or anything because this particular listing was in good condition at a good price point. Do sellers maybe do this on purpose so they can re-list the item because they feel they didn't make enough?
If that does happen, it's very uncommon. You can get into some pretty hot shit with eBay if you're a seller and go back on a listing after it's already been paid for. I'll reiterate what others have said, message them and ask what's up. If he's being a shitter about it, eBay has your back, so hit them up.
I have a T420 coming in the mail! Will be here on Thursday! They shipped it fast!
Hopefully you got the one with the 1600x900 screen, its much much better than the 1366x768 one
