Yeah no reply RIP. Pretty bummed out. I already bought a battery too so now I'm limited to the x200/x201 unless the x220 can use the same battery.
I'm thinking about trying to fix the dead backlight on the destroyed X41t I'm repairing.
If I'm trying to test if the inverter is functional, how do I test it with a cheapo multimeter? I know that CCFL inverter boards output high voltage and I don't want to blow up my multimeter (and also don't have spare CCFL bulbs to test with)
If it's a bad CCFL I might actually just send the screen to a guy to DYI a LED backlight to it

ive had my x230 for just over a year and its ran perfectly without fault. upgraded to a 9-cell battery pack, got the classic keyboard installed. now i just need to get the webcam kit and a new palmrest with the fingerprint scanner
Anybody done a mobo swap on an x220 or similar? Thinking about bumping up to the i7 board from my i5, for a bit of a speed boost and usb3. Wondering what's involved beyond just the swap itself.
I have an X220 with an i7 and afaik the USB3 is an extra port, so you'd need to dremel a hole or something.
Has anyone here successfully upgraded a x200 TN panel with an IPS? Or at least upgrade to a better res like 1440x900?
how the hell do I recell a x200 battery???
I'm really interested in getting a Thinkpad, my currently laptop is about 6 years old and honestly has seen better days, it's some midrange Samsung laptop with weird hybrid integrated/dedicated graphics, but I never do anything even remotely close to gaming on it anymore and I want something more interesting. I am interested in thinkpads because I love the aesthetic and repairability aspects, and I also love the idea of hardware mods. I love dissembling and modding things. What models would be best for that? I would prefer a 16:9 display since I use my laptop to watch media and plug into TVs fairly often, but if there is a really cool/cheap 4:3 model out there with lots of modification options I might be interested in that. I was thinking an X220 or T430, leaning more towards T430 since it is socketed and the OP says it can take the old keyboard?
Frankenbatt! 'cos everyone on the thinkpads forum says the chinese ones are crap and new 44+/44++ are too expensive for me right now.

The one bad thing about it is that the new batteries are 4.2v rated while the old are 4.3v, but as far as I can tell this won't result in a bomb and I can just keep them under 4.2 by lowering the max. charge to ~85% so...
My S440 takes 20V input.
I got an external charging pack that delivers 19V.
Do you guys think I can charge it with the pack?
Yes, but only if your power pack is powerful enough; Drawing enough current could drop the voltage from 19V to lower than the charging threshold.
Won't hurt anything but won't charge either.
Also 3.7v is nominal voltage not full charge voltage
Since we've got some proper Thinkpad aficionados in here, I'll try asking. A couple of days ago, my beloved T430 randomly turned off during light use (FIrefox, 5 tabs open and paint.net running), I don't mean a windows shutdown and I don't mean it hit thermal limit and shutdown, it was as if it had no battery inserted and the power adapter was pulled. It's been fine since but it's got me worried because I love this thing, it's the single best tech purchase I've made, stupid as it is to be attached to tech.
Any ideas on the cause? The battery is in good health, likewise I've continuity checked the cable from the PSU and there's no break as far as I can tell. Had it 3 years now and it's never skipped a beat apart from this.
Honestly, I would wait until it happens again to really start pulling it apart looking for issues. It could just be a one time fluke. Something you could try though, is (carefully) flexing the laptop and moving it around a bit to check and see if something is physically loose.
Look in event viewer to double check that it wasn't a driver/strange overheating issue. It should tell you what happened just before the shutdown.
In my experience, RAM problems won't always give you a BSOD. Especially if it happens again, see if you can run memtest86.
i've had my x220 randomly shut down a few times and i don't know what caused it but it reboots without a problem every time.
The middle mouse button on my T470p is acting weird. Sometimes it fires inputs when I just barely touch it, often when I'm clicking the left mouse button. Other times it works just fine. And if I click it slow enough it doesn't fire at all, no matter how hard I push.
It's still under warranty. I'm thinking about sending it in, but I've got a sticker on the back. Will they just repair the trackpoint buttons, or will they send me a whole new refurbished model?
got a t430s recently, pretty satisfied with it except for the ass trackpad and the tn display (which i'll replace soon) but it's okay i guess
I bought a few trackpoint caps because the one my x201 came with was old and the rubber ripped. I'm disappointed with the ones I bought because they're not genuine and there's not enough friction between my finger and the trackpoint. I just bought some more and I hope they're truly genuine. Been buying them all off ebay btw.
For which system did you do this recell for? There was a whole reddit thread about this and they were saying it's quite difficult to do it right.
Does anyone know if there's a x250 series screen upgrade that it is good enough to do color sensitive work on?
That's a lot of what I do, and I sacrificed it for the meme box. Would be really slick to be able to edit photos on a thinkpad
I did it on my original 44+ 6-cell battery for an X230 (will also work on an X220, I think) and haven't had any trouble with it so far.
I've used Lenovo Advantage on Win10 to reset the gauge, then locked it at 85% max and getting a solid 2.5 or more hours out of it, more than enough to use at work, which has been a HUGE improvement over the half hour with high self-discharge it used to have. Not pushing 100% because (I assume) that'd make the charging circuit try to push the batteries close to 4.3V. Not bad at all for some scavenged batteries I got for free!
If any of you thinkpad enthusiasts pick up one of the new A series with the Ryzen Pro APU, hit me up. I'm interested in a few things vs my Latitude with one.
This is lewd.
is a thinkpad x140e worth 60 bucks
i want a thing i can toss around in my bag without worrying about my macbook
I think there are models with a platter drive and an SSD, if you slap an SSD in that thing it should be pretty good. There are tons of X220's on eBay with an SSD already installed and those might be a better option like Northern Lights said though.
as long as youtube works i don't really mind, i have an old ssd lying around that i could throw in it
X220 best thinkpad. You can shove an msata ssd and a disk drive in the thing and it's still light as hell. Plus i5/i7 so not super old and you can typically grab them for under $100 easy.
I finally decided to ignore the deprecation warnings for xf86-input-synaptics, and tried it on my X220.
Mousepad jitter just vanished because Synaptics has noise cancellation. Libinput might be the standard nowadays, but with older hardware like the X220, definitely need the old shit.
Can't believe I bought a broken down t430 when I was drunk. Oh well guess I have a new project to work on.
just purchased an x230 with an IPS screen which will be replacing my x220t. In order to hackintosh this one and have it work without dongles i'll need to flash the bios and the process is a lot more involved than i expected.
ended up ordering a raspberry pi and some cables since it's not just a software solution. if i brick it, it's not too big of a loss since the machine itself was only $100. if it goes well i might try the fhd mod but the kit is $70 and the screen will probably be around $70 too and i don't know if it's even worth sinking that much into such an old and cheap laptop. I've been getting along just fine with the 1366x768 screen
if anyone wants progress pics of me doing everything along with a little writeup then just hit agree, everything should arrive after a week and i'm excited to get into it.
Is it consider "sacrilege" to get an e450? Trying to go ultra budget and I'm getting a good deal out of it (50$ for lightly used).
Model elitism is stupid. The budget ThinkPads are still better than average laptops, they just don't have the insanely solid build that the T, X and P series do. Get something that works for you.
Display and battery on the E450 sucks pretty bad, though, so keep that in mind.
