Yes, I'm talking about the cells I can't use and want to just make them dead so they pose no risk once I find a way to dispose of them.
oops. was gonna clean out my old PC so my girlfriend could use it to play games. accidentally corrupted the OS due to running it headless and power cycling. plugged in the SSD to image it before reinstalling
pretty sure imaging the drive was the final thing that SSD could handle since now whenever i install windows it works once, and the next time i reboot either startup repair fails, or the throbber just stops moving and that's it
I an X230T, I don't have any real problems with it.
They're really solid but the touch tech isn't quite up to the standards of modern drawing tablets. As long as you're not a professional artist you should be fine.
unpopular opinion:
old thinkpads kinda suck as a value proposition
An X230t can be had for $200-300 (kitted out with reasonable parts i.e. battery, 8gb ram, 256gb ssd), but so can a latitude e7450 / e7470 / e5250.
Used X1 tablets can be found for about 500, which is quite a bit more, but I like my featherweight x1 tabby.
I think when you buy old thinkpads, you're paying for the wealth of community knowledge and replacement parts

Guys, I discovered something kind of fucky and I think it's facebook's sneaky way of raising retention and engagement numbers. When you click a facebook/instagram result on google facebook quickly closes the tab and opens a new one or something like that so the tab's history is cleared and you can't click the back button, leaving you stuck on facebook unless you redo your search. I added another video of what opening a regular link is like for comparison.
Is there somewhere I can post about it? It seems really fucked up.
I have one and it's comfy once you get used to the nip, but the screen's already kind of outdated at this point you're just buying it for the keyboard and the durability. If you can snag one for under $200 maxed out it's a good deal, I use mine daily and for all my classes.
That's completely valid and in that sense they're way better than any consumer laptop, but when it comes to wifi adapters and screens you're pretty much stuck with what you have unless you're crazy or buy a later eDP model.
My T430 has a 900p display straight from the factory and while it's still a trash display, it has enough real estate to do work on. But yeah, the weak WiFi reception has burned me a few times.
also this
My work is going to be recycling some xserve 3,1's
Wondering If I should rescue one, might be fun to have as a OSX workstation or use it to backup my VM host, assuming the noise dosen't kill me first.
Surely these exist for literally every model of thinkpad ever and you don't have to write them yourself
You underestimate how bizarre and lopsided the FOSS community's priorities are
If those weird things were more popular, they'd get better support. Because developers would probably be using them.
Most problems in FOSS get fixed because a developer is having the problem.
Some models, anyway
So far 150 cells have stayed 4.15 or above. Due to resistance some cells never really made it to 4.2v. So I just split the batch between anything 4.15v or higher and everything else. I'll try to recharge the rest up to 4.2 if I can, and do a discharge cycle if needed to see. Got all the packs broken down. Only about 10 cells or so are flat out bad. The rest charge up fine, but need to test for IR and self discharge. Since I plan to have this pack run a 24/7 cycle, self discharge isn't as big of a deal. If it loses 1% of it's capacity in a day, I'm not bothered.
But lots of waiting.
Don't tell me you're just YOLOing some charge into the fucking things? There's a CC+CV charge curve you have to follow.

I regret sharing in this thread when you assume I'm doing everything wrong each time.
To be fair Cresty, you didn't really make it seem like you weren't YOLOing it. Don't take it the wrong way.
I mean batteries are dangerous as fuck; if you are doing something wrong you could lose a hand or burn your house down. Just a little caution on your behalf.
I don't have problems with someone confirming if I'm following the proper procedure with something. I do have a problem with the tone of every response being the assumption that I haven't studied this or done literally any research. Especially given how long I've been apart of this group and how I tend to read up on anything for months before jumping into a project as has been the case with any of my projects I've talked about here.
If you have concerns, sure share them. Just don't be condescending.
I have zero reference point for how much you know about the topic, and I don't want you to kill yourself.
That means the nuclear option of explanations for every single possible issue when you don't mention how you're doing what you're doing.
There's two things I don't like messing with, 240v AC and li-ion batteries
Is it bad that I've grown kinda fond of 120v zaps after being shocked so many times? It's like shockholm syndrome.
I mean, that just depends on how and where.
Ha ha, but fingers mostly, and usually me not unplugging a device because "There's no way I'll touch the active 120v section" even though I always do. Not dangerous stuff like a CRT or something really high voltage, just heaters and other crap appliances.
Never touched mains myself, though back at school I stopped a bunch of people from doing so.
Did my still-favorite prank back then, I was working with another guy, just the two of us in a room, we just got in from outside during the winter, I had multiple layers of clothing, shitloads of static electricity on me when I got back in.
Had the guy get the project laptop booted, went behind him and touched the earth on the power outlet.
Stung like hell for a moment, but static charge + low impedance path to earth = loud "shock" noise. Dude thought I had gone and killed myself, couldn't stop myself laughing for a minute.
The daze you're in all day after a good 120v shock ain't half bad
3 days into owning a smARTPHONE WITHOUT A HEADPHONE JACK AND I LOST THE STUPID DONGLE
At least my jalopy has sorta integrated bluetooth now (after banging my head for hours trying to get it out and soldering to traces) so that's kinda nice
