Been enjoying my new Nokia 5.1 so far. For £150, I can’t really complain and android one is a breath of fresh air. Unfortunately I couldn’t delete two apps which Nokia put on, but other than that, it’s nice to have full reign. (Including getting rid of that awful google search bar on the home screen.)
you can delete any app for the current user using ADB
find the package name of the app
adb shell
pm list packages
pm uninstall -k --user 0 <package name>
So, I've been an Xperia man for most of my smartphone life. Other than that, I had a shitty Galaxy Fresh that was outdated when I bought it.
M2, M4 Aqua, X Compact and now XZ2 Compact.
All fantastic within their own right, although the M4 had way too big bezels, even for its time, but yeah every single one worked great. My only regret was the noisy camera and the somewhat boring experience. Good, very good, but they weren't really all that wild.
Now, my gf's old P8 from 2015 or 16 or whatever is slow as FUCK, so she's using my X Compact. Trouble is, that thing is so small that, while it does work fantasticaly well, I kind of want to give her my XZ2 Compact, also because I'm bored of it, despite being an AMAZING PHONE in all aspects, but also because I want to change my formula.
And so, yesterday, I bought a Note 9.
A fully decked out Ocean Blue 8gb Note 9.
And its fucking.glorious.
Huge as fuck, but also hugely glorious.
I'm just a bit skeptic about android updates since Samsung is rather slow compared to Sony, but goddamn is this thing a whole different experience.
OS updates tend to be later than on other phones but security updates are almost always on point with Samsung iirc
Thanks for the Alarmy recommendations, I will give it a go.
Yeah, still no Android Pie (even though it is announced I think), but it does have the november security update.
Meanwhile, the XZ2 Compact got it like a month or two after official release. Granted Xperias have quite the good OS support.
I think Pie is coming on January with the S9 (not sure if its the full version or a beta) and the S10
Is there a way to make the always on display on the note 9 turn off when inside a pocket or in a dark place?
The timer imo isn't enough.
Their naming scheme is indeed retarded, go for the codenames when you get confused:
Note 5 China = Note 5 Pro india = Note 5 AI global = codename whyred, software and hardware is identical except the global version has 2 cameras and the chinese version lacks Google apps
Note 5 Global = Redmi 5 Plus China = codename Vince
You can use anything on the Note 5 Pro forum on Note 5 AI, it's the same phone
i think there's a setting that turns it off when the proximity sensor detects its in a pocket
Shouldn't it do that by default?
Also, I just installed GBoard after watching a video from Linus tech tips. I've used SwiftKey for years, but this keyboard is seriously impressive! I've been using it for like 5 minutes now and it's already proving itself better in many ways:
- Moving the cursor with gestures on the spacebar
- The ability to have both swiping AND the delete word gesture. In SwiftKey those are mutually exclusive.
- A separate window for cursor management, with home, end, select, copy and paste. More useful than the arrows at the bottom of the screen with SwiftKey, where I keep missing the space bar because of it.
And somehow it already knows words I specifically use, like "DarkRP".
GBoard is pretty great. It can't remove quotes and other tags on Facepunch though.
ah yeah it turns off after a few seconds of covering it with my hand, nice, thought it was ALWAYS ON, which is a dumb idea because pocket lint can't tell time anyway
I'm going to ask for my first phone for christmas. Anyone know of a good, cheap model? I don't care about having the latest, just as long as it works.
I'll take a headphone jack, please. Feels like I need one, plus I don't want to support this bullshit trend.
Thanks for the recommendation though.
Used to have the same opinion, still wish it had a headphone jack, but Android one was more important for me so I got it, if you don't mind miui (it isn't inherently bad, I just don't like skins) and you don't play games then get the note 5 ai
Seamless update is still bullshit though
It's not a trend, it's a standard now.
Well fuck. God damn Apple.
oh and yes, the phone has to be compatible with sprint.
I mean, I would say the PH-1 but no headphone jack and an uncertain future probably aren't the best.
TBH I'd just get a Moto G6 or something and be done with it.
Alright, thanks!
At least apple had some argument about removing it, more space for battery and other stuff (their batteries are still shit) and much easier and cheaper to have water resistance, but why the fuck is xiaomi removing it other than shamelessly copying apple (just look at their new UK store) if most of their phones aren't water resistant, and ironically the ones that got great battery are the ones that still have a headphone jack
So the day I got my first android phone I installed this kryboard "Hacker's Keyboard"

and I could never switch away from it despite it showing its age, being able to use ctrl+a/c/x/z/v and much simpler access to characters using shift, but as you can tell, it's not that practical to type on because of how tiny the buttons are, there is a compact mode which is better but it only works for English US
is there any alternative?
Found it, thanks, would've been great if it had Ctrl but it's good enough, my biggest problem was having to searching through pages for symbols, having the shift key is much easier, and the PC layout isn't available in Arabic but at least it doesn't disable unsupported languages like hacker's keyboard does and just uses the other layout instead
Managed to find and order a reasonably priced S9+ Titanium Gray , which are kinda hard to come by over here - it's the sweet spot between the regular s9 which is kinda small and the note 9 which was too big for me.
Should be delivered tomorrow, excited!
Just when I was getting used to android 8, android 9 comes along and ruins my day. I can’t help but feel it’s a complete step backwards for what I want my phone to do. Ah well, guess I gotta stick with it if I want constant security updates. Oh, and I returned my Nokia 5.1 for a cash refund and spent £30 extra on the Nokia 6.1.
How so? The wifi notification center downgrade is annoying, but it really does feel like a more cohesive less "bootleg" device, at least on Lineage.
For me, my main gripe is the UI. And I know you can install Nova launcher and it’s all good but the main reason why I bought an android one (stock) phone is the ability to remove crap from the homepage and remove unwanted apps. Android 9 reinstalled all the useless google apps, locked the search bar to the bottom, added ‘at a glance bar’ to the top which I’ll never use. There also seems to be a problem when I go into certain apps and change settings. For example, if I open google maps, tap the = icon, go down to settings, open location settings, make a change or not, tap the back arrow, it will bring me to the main system settings page and not back to the in-app settings. Oh and I was pretty salty yesterday as I attempted to reset my phone back to 8 but the reset left it at 9 and automatically turned on 4G when I was redownloading my profile from drive backup.
Small briefing on the note9
I fucking love this thing. Its huge and I usually like smaller devices, but I just love this a whole lot. The screen is HUGE and fantastic, and the sound is SPECTACULAR. Good GOD is it good! I've never heard such good phone speakers before.
Guys, what keyboards do you recommend out of...
Swiftkey, gboard or the stock samsung?
I've used swift since xz2 and it works really well, except for what I think is its design choice of having the period right next to the spacebar and constantly pressing it. I seem to miss more keys aswell, and I dont know if its the keyboard itself or because I use borderless black theme for the keys.
Samsung was pretty ok, but... I didnt really want to use it, and tbh I wanted to use gboard for a more stock experience, but I forget whatever was the reason I didnt use it. Think it was the same problem as swift plus shortcuts not being where I wanted them to be at.
Goddamn I pressed the period key so many times writting this...
