I'm talking about US models. Int'l models (Exynos) are fully able to be bootloader unlocked/rooted and all that, as far as I know there's currently no way to do that with US Snapdragon models.
My brother bought a S9+, qcom variant and he has the bootloader unlocked. He told me you need to wait like 7 days to be able to unlock your bootloader and root your phone. And yeah, Brazil models aren't Exynos, they're Qualcomm.
Is your brother in Brazil? I'm talking about North American, United States sold carrier devices. They're all sold locked and you cannot unlock them.
only the NA and China models are locked iirc, every other Exynos and Snapdragon model is unlocked (which is cool and good since you can install GSI's on them)
Oh. Should've specified that it was carrier specific models that were locked. The global qcom version should be unlockable.
Unfortunately even the unlocked GSM model sold domestically also cannot be unlocked to my knowledge. You basically need to import an int'l Exynos model or an int'l Qcom model (good luck with GSM bands)
You can't root the US / Snapdragon versions of the Galaxy S7, S9, or S9, only the Exynos versions
Instagram is a fucking joke on my Galaxy A7. It literally smudges all of my photos with a thick layer of vaseline

I spent the last few days looking for used phone opportunities and comparing phones, but it seems like going for a new Xiaomi phone will be way less risky, and I'll get a brand new phone for the same price and similar specs.
I think I'll get a Redmi Note 6 Pro.
Do you guys order from Gearbest? I've only bought cables and cheap things from them but they've been trustworthy so far.
I bought a Xiaomi car dashcam and it arrived pretty fast for my country. No issues so far.
Bought my Poco from them, no problems. They're a bit spammy on the emails though.
Is it still a good idea to get an S8+ nowadays? I might buy a new phone on March~ish and give my current to my mom, as I've already said I had both Samsung and Xiaomi options for a new mobile, reciently the S8 has been pretty cheap so I'm guessing it'll be a bit cheaper by then, but the S9 might be cheap then, too
The S8 and the S9 have the same specs, can't say for the S8+ and S9+ (but they should also have the same specs).
Well the S9 does have a faster SoC but I think I'll be alright with the S8
But it might go out of stock soon considering the S10 is right around the corner
i just dropped my axon 7 and now the top left corner of the screen won't recognize inputs - rip
i've been looking and i can't really find a phone comparable for what i paid for my axon 7 2 years ago ($400 USD)
what i've been looking at:
LG - V35
oneplus 6
leaning toward the oneplus, thoughts?
You also have the Poco F1 or the Mi 8.
He's in the US, neither phones cover US bands well enough to be useful as a replacement.
ended up getting a oneplus 6 as the screen is now rapidly dying
Good choice tbh
I've had my LG G3 for about 4 years now. The last 6 months or so the screen has been fizzling out (see the beginning of this video)
The temporary fixes stopped working so I ended up replacing the motherboard (for about $40)
I forgot how much of a pain it is to root that thing, had to re-flash to an older firmware just to be able to get root access
At the time I couldn't justify spending ~$300 for a new one when the only features I'm missing out on is a fingerprint sensor, fast charging, and battery life
Are there any OEMs that provide the above without a trashy ROM?
Moto G6? Any Nokia device?
Most modern ROMs are actually pretty good.
I've heard pretty good things about Motorola phones, and nothing bad about Nokia's, I'll take a look at what they're selling
Eh, I think I my main problems with non-AOSP ROMs are skins and pre-installed apps, even Google ones
Apps are uninstallable, but skins aren't, and even some modern skins like MIUI's look bad IMO
The better idea is to buy whatever and flash a custom rom, because unfortunately in reality all stock roms suck, still a good idea to get an android one phone though, just don't get a Nokia if you want to do that
I just bought a CAT S41. As someone who doesn't need all the fancy shit new phones have, and as someone who works outside a lot and who's phone constantly gets banged around, I think it's gonna be very worth it.
S61 thermal imaging or bust
You just gave me flashbacks to a mud-covered phone with some kind of mold inside. Thanks.
Yeah I wanted that but I will never be able to justify 1k for a phone.
if i use a powerbank on a phone and play games on it will the phone just use the power from the powerbank or will it discharge and recharge
i know the switch does the former
It's hard to get a specific answer to this, the best one I can give is... it depends
If the phone is at 100% it still draws a little bit of current even if it's not charging anyway in normal conditions
While charging, the power is going to both the battery and whatever is using power, if too much power is being used then power from the battery is used as well
Short answer is, neither of the two, it won't discharge but the battery is still connected to power, to make it more confusing there's a kernel option that controls this which can be switched to laptop mode, which disconnects the battery entirely when it's full and uses the power from the charger, though you can't just enable this, it can only be enabled when compiling the kernel
