I've had a galaxy S8+ for about a year now, but I really miss being able to do all the hacky rooty stuff I could on my Nexus 6. Could somebody in that scene recommend a good current phone with community support?
Any of the OnePlus phones are probably your best bet in that regard. They have phenomenal community support.
Otherwise Xiaomi devices are pretty good as well, with caveats depending on your region and patience
The Poco F1 takes 3 days to unlock. The rest takes a bit more.
Aaaaaa i cant handle how this pos phone gets hot over just web browsing
Shoutouts to my Sony XA2 Ultra for being dropped in polar vortex snow when I slipped and still taking a call 15 minutes later and lighting up the screen so that I could find it despite not being water resistant.
I've heard some great things about that phone tbh
I have fun telling people that it was $220 when they ask about it and their jaws drop. The camera is a bit shit but I'm a photographer so I have separate tools for that if I need quality. Works in a pinch.

Got the Pie update with One UI and I don't like it, it feels like just a lame mimic of iOS, maybe it's just me.
I think it follows some looks with AOSP Pie which most people said looked a bit too much like iOS
The system-wide dark theme and moving most important stuff to the bottom looks super nice, though
I hate how notifications don't have previews anymore, it's actually really annoying. Dark mode is nice, but not worth the trade off.
Yeah dark mode is hella nice but notification previews are gone and the recent apps menu is really weird now though you can see each app instance completely now (it mimics iOS pretty closely). I think I'll get used to it eventually it definitely isn't an upgrade from the old UI.

I got Pie in my note9 a few days ago.
The only thing I don't like is how, just like in the XZ2 Compact, you text back someone through the stock sms app by using the notification popup for a quick text, but after sending, the text stays there as if it wasn't read, and the notification LED stays on, as if I didn't see it and didn't reply back. That is really annoying, making me either swipe it out or open the app itself.
other than that, HUUUUUGE improvement to the device, like FUCKING HUGE
Battery time improved so goddamn much, its mad. I used to lose more than 5%, up to 10% battery overnight, with the phone flipped down to turn the AOD off. I only lose about 2%, maybe 3 at worst now, battery drain also seems a lot improved during use aswell, the AOD is always off unless I tap it for a quick show (although I don't know if thats new, I like it that way now), dark mode is obviously a great thing, performance is up a bit, and I've gotten use to the swiping task/home/back buttons.
A straight upgrade.
Even the galaxy watch got an update that made performance and battery time a bit better. It's like a late christmas gift!
you mean the icons on the status bar? sadly you cant disable that since these phones dont have notches or camera holes
I mean like say I got a message on FB messenger, or a YouTuber I'msubbed to just uploaded, the previews are gone, I have to unlock the phone and check them manually. The message one was especially helpful cause sometimes I'd be able to read it without putting myself on read.
I recently upgraded to a Pixel 3 from a Moto Z2 Play, and I know it sounds like a dumb question, but how safe is it to use cables/wall adapters made for different phones? I know the adapter that comes for the Pixel will help it charge faster, but I just mean using the old one for regular charging. I ask because I might've slightly fried the Z2 by using a cheap type C cable I found at Canada Computers. The battery was never the same after that and the phone had freezing problems. I know type C can be a confusing endeavor, but I just want to know if its safe to use my old chargers and cables with the new phone. Online results are too vague.
Tbh it's pretty much "universal". The default is 5V 1-2A, but if you have Quick Charge or similar it changes. If you were using TurboPower it should work with your Pixel. It's pretty much QC.
Yeah, it was Turbopower. Thanks! So what you mean is that not only will it not cause any problems, but also even be better than a non-quick charger? Because that's pretty neat.
S10 got shown off
more excited about price drops for the S8/S9 tbh
still looks cool though
I'm going from S8+ to S10+. I usually upgrade every two generations since one-generation leaps are too small to be worth the price. But the S10+ seems to be worth it.
My S8+ has been in very active use. It's gone through snowstorms, rainstorms, multiple countries, beaches, parties, road trips, and events.
I've loved every bit of it and will gladly sacrifice my wallet to continue with the even better S10+.
Same here - and Best Buy has a good trade in value at $300, and considering how well I've taken care of it I'd be surprised if didn't get at least $250 of that back. Gonna look forward to trying it out.
You can remap the Bixby button on Samsung’s Galaxy S10 to do wha..
Samsung will allow buyers of its new Galaxy S10 smartphones to use the Bixby key to open whatever app they want. The Verge has confirmed that with the S10, the company has added settings that allow you to customize the button beyond what has been allowed previously. You can assign the Bixby button to open a third-party app with either a single or double press of the button.
having to use an ipad just reminds me of how much i appreciate android
Samsung will extend Bixby button remapping to Galaxy S8, S9, and..
Samsung has finally included a built-in method for remapping the button to a command of your choosing. Even better: the company says it’s now extending that remapping capability to other flagship phones in the Galaxy line. That includes the S8 and S9 lines, as well as the Note 8 and Note 9.So long as your device is running Android Pie (as well as the One Touch UI that sits atop it), Samsung says you’ll get Bixby button customization through a future software update.
Yeah I was expecting that. It's just a software change so it'd look really bad on their part if they kept it just on the S10.
Mine should be going into the post office on the 27th and be on my door a couple days later, according to the operator's estimate.
I read the official launch date is 8th, but in Finland all of my smartphone pre-orders have always arrived a few days earlier for some reason, and that trend seems to continue with the S10+
I got to see the new Samsung models in person, we didnt have much time since a whole office was trying to look at them but took some rudimentary photos of them.

So, took my EPA certification test earlier today. I'll get my results in like two weeks (conventionally enough it get paid around that time), so I'm looking to upgrade from my cracked Vivo XL3 PLus. Not planning on going over 300 unless it's good deal (I.e. A phone that normally sells for 450 but is on sale for like 320 something).
Camera doesn't matter much to me.
Fully support T-Mobile 4G LTE (or as near as possible).
Big screen (5.5 inch+)
Nice size or expandable storage
Nice power behind the phone
Does anyone use Android Messages (and the web client) and have the issue where it won't connect if your phone is locked? Background data for Messages is on, and I'm not sure what else it could be.
